If Tiger is correct, and his days of playing competiive golf are indeed over, then he joins the ranks of. Bobby Jones, and Lord Byron Nelson. Jones retired at the age of 28. right after completing the REAL Grand Slam. He then put his wife and children first, followed by his profession of practicing law. Nelson retired at the age of 34 after competing the AMAZING year of 1945 (18 wins, including 11 in a row!). Tiger is in VERY. good company!!

Heron Creek (Oriskany Creek borders it and used to flood it often, and yes, the herons do live here!) is near Clinton, NY (home of Hamilton College) used to be called "Birdies, Eagles, and Ducks", is a real test of golfing skills! Yardage is 3,247 (9 hole course) , but plays longer, since you have to lay up on 3 tee shots. The greens are moderately fast but slope toward the sides, so you are FORCED to play at the middles. Par is 36 with 2 par 5's and 2 par 3's. A true test of golf!

Good post!

I believe you have your details right, viz. Laurie Achterlonie and Granny Clark' s Wynd. The Ole Course, ah 'this quite THE ONE, 'this true, Mon. And donna ye forget fairway boonkers-----they be like ole friends, like the Principal's nose, Hell (Jock Nickloos called it SOMETHING ELSE), the Coffins (been the DEATH of many a good round), and PEZ SEZ (in honor of THE POLISH PRINCE from thesandtrap.com!)!

The background is tremendous!

OK. I wrongly assumed that since it was BIG NEWS on ESPN and in newspapers, even our local one--the "Utica Observer Dispatch" that All Jazeera reported they had statements and other evidence that Manning had been taking HGH, which is BANNED by the NFL. while Manning has vehemently denied the charge, Al Jazeera is standing by the story. I have the December 30 issue of the "New York Daily News", written by Nathaniel Vinton.

Did you ever read a book about courses in your area?)

Very nice collections! -
Did you ever design your own course?

Sure. It is a start! -
Today, TGC showed a replay of the 2015 Open Championship. I forgot that Marc Leishman got to -16 with 3 holes left. He then made a bogey to finish at -15, good for a tie with Zach and Louis!

This is an excellent post. You are absolutely right about Old Tom!

I agree. The Shark had a bad run from the 1986 PGA (Bob Tway holed a shot from a bunker) to the 1987 Masters (Larry Mize made that nearly impossible chip in the playoff). In the 1996 Masters, his loss was because of a TOTAL collapse on Sunday (Faldo had a steady 67 to Greg's 78!!). However, his two wins in the Open Championship (1986 and 1993) were very impressive! In 1990, our local boy, Wayne Levi, beat out the Shark for the PGA Tour Player of the Year honors as Wayne won 4 times. It was his BEST year (he had 12 career wins).

Let me STEER this golf cart back ON TRACK. My son and I miss Payne and always will. Every October, we not only remember that awful 25th in 1999, but we take comfort in the announcement of the new winner of the Payne Stewart Award. Starting with Arnie, Jack, and Lord Byron in 2000 to Ernie Els last year, ALL of the winners have been VERY DESERVING!!

No, but I hope Jordan Spieth has learned what NOT TO DO: do not drive WAY LEFT on the widest fairway on the planet Earth, do NOT have a 60 yard shot at the WORST possible angle, and DO NOT hit your 2nd shot so it gets sucked down the Valley of Sin! He needed birdie after missing the short par putt on the Road Hole. If he had made birdie, he would have qualified for the playoff with Zach, Marc, and Louis. Then, he still could have TIED Ben Hogan who now is still the ONLY player in Golf History to win the Masters, US Open, and the Open Championship in one year!

Thank you. It does make this thread much better!

When Ty Webb is giving "lessons on life" to Danny, he says "Remember that a flute with no holes is NOT a flute, but a doughnut without a hole is NOT a doughnut. It is danish.". What the hell does that mean?

What about Heather Glen, Possom Trot, and Myrtle Wood? My wife and I have not been to the Grand Strand for 23 years! I like to walk and carry my clubs. NO carts for me!

I have---9 holes. About 30 years ago, I put together a group of investors to try buying a 9 hole course where my Dad and I learned to play this great game. There was enough land to construct a second 9. My buddy ,who has a degree in turf management, was to be the Superintendent. He and I laid out the plans for the new 9. It was to be carved through the hardwoods and pines! We would have retained the name-----_Maple crest--- where a scenic view welcomes you! The family politely declined our purchase offer and still oens it to this day!

Be careful! She may be smarter than you think. What is she doing while you are on the golf course?

And the 17th is one of the best holes in all of golf! That makes the 18th a real let-down!
-
Marc Leishman will win a Major BEFORE either Dustin or Sergio!

I know it is a sacrilege to criticize the "Birthplace of Golf" but the 18th is one of the worst finishing holes of any Major venue. The fairway is wide open and the green is almost driveable. The only thing that saves it from being the "laughing stock" of the Golf World is the Valley of Sin!
