I think it is Dustin because he has had the lead so often and then blown it! I still cannot believe he 3 putted the last hole at Chambers Bay from such a short distance!
-
Good link. I remember that happening. Give Arnie credit for keeping his focus and making eagle. Venturi was too hung up on "what could have happened".

In my opinion, it was definitely The Oldest Major. So many players had a chance to win on the back 9, and then there was the 3 man playoff! I was "on the edge of my seat" for 3 hours. Add to it the drama of whether Jordan would join Ben as the ONLY player to win the Masters, the US Open, and THE Open in one year. Finally, it all took place at the "Birthplace of Golf"!

Every great player has critics. Ken may not have been as jealous of other players because they were NOT called "The King".
-
My first reaction was "Sure I believe him. He would NEVER lie". After reading Christine Brennan's column in USA Today, I am not so sure. What do you think?
-
Ken was a good announcer and an excellent amateur player. As a pro, he won only one Major and did NOT have an army of fans, like Arnie did. Do you not think he was jealous?

I see that many of you who voted for Tiger's 2000 state that one reason is the depth of the field. This factor has been mentioned before and I am not sure how it was resolved. One way to measure the "quality" of the field is the number of Hall of Famers that a player had to beat. Has anyone done this with 1953 and 2000?

I see the photo of The Hawk on your Profile, but how are you prejudiced? Are you related to Mr. Hogan aka Hennie Bogan?

Good post. Some new golfers may not realize that the Rule Book that is governed by the USGA and the RGA is subject to change (most of the time, it is "tweaking"). As you and other pros know, there are changes almost every year. For golfers who play competitively in tournaments, it is absolutely critical to really know the rules.

You are right, of course. On my cell phone, which is 5 years old, I cannot figure out how to hit the return button. It is easy on the computer here, and I am used to doing that---see all I did was hit the return button.

OK. Thanks. I do understand. I did use the icon at the top, and everything looked good, and then when I saved it, the numbered paragraphs were shifted over. And I did edit it, as you can see from the marking. I am going to practice, and in the meantime, keep my posts nice and short. I guess I can do multiple replies on one post, and the system will merge them, correct? As I have said before, I used to use Print Shop software, and got help from the printing company that did the printing for my magazine and other publications. I do NOT want to waste your time and you have been patient with me. I will get better, believe me. By the way, I am at the library, and it is so much easier to do replies and edit them. The NH library is closed only on Wednesday and Sunday, when there are no holidays, so that should give me plenty of opportunities to use their computers.

I voted for The Hawk for three main reasons: Hogan's winning percentage in majors that year was. 100% (3 for 3)and Tiger's was 75% (3 for 4). He knew he could not play in both the Open Championship and the PGA because they overlapped. Hogan was told by Sam Snead, Gene Sarazen, and others that he needed to win "across the pond" if he was to be considered a truly great golfer. Hogan decided he would go only once to see if he could earn the claret jug. The venue was Carnoustie, regarded by the Brits and the Scots as THE TOUGHEST course on the rota, and has been nicknamed "Carnastie". Inspite of "nasty" weather, the Wee Ice Mon not only won, he broke the course record! The Scots begged him to return in 1954 to defend his title, but he knew he COULD NOT. the pain in his legs and hips from the horrific 1949 car accident was too intense. He had come on a mission, and he went back home with "mission accomplished".

And the USGA uses that line in their ads against slow play, including Arnie. Here is another: Judge Smeal to Ty: "Put that steering wheel over on the other side, where it belongs!"
-
There are many great quotations in the movie, such as this exchange: Ty: "I don't keep score, Judge." "Well then, how do you measure yourself against other golfers?" "By height.". What is YOUR favorite quote?

What a GREAT WAY to start the New Year! Last night, TGC broadcast Caddy shack at 7 and 9 PM. Once again, we heard how Carl was promised by the Dalai Lama that he would receive "total consciousness" on his deathbed as the payment for caddying. Also, we watched as Carl tried to blow up that "little kangaroo"! My user name is now Ty Webb, so iacas can now write "Hi, Ty. How's the guy?"

1. Winning the Member Guest at St. Lawrence University GC with my son and we played with the defending Champs on the final day. After the first day, we had a 7 point lead, and then EXPANDED that by 3 points and won by 10! 2. Lowering my handicap to scratch, the LOWEST it has ever been (and I am 67!). 3. Shooting a 1 over 73 at Stonebridge, my lowest career score there, and I had s 1 under 35 on the back 9!

He spanned the generations. First, I remember my Dad and Mom taking me to see him against the Washington Generals and also watching them on TV. Secondly, I remember my wife and me taking our son and daughter to the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Now, we have taken our granddaughter, the Ryleigh girl. You know, it NEVER "gets old" seeing them and hearing "Sweet Georgia Brown"!

There are SOME athletes who are also entertainers. One of the BEST of this elite group is now "stealing the show" in Heaven! Meadow George Lemon, best known to the entire world as "Meadowlark" passed away last Sunday. While he achieved FAME as the leading member of the Harlem Globetrotters, he was just as proud of being ordained a minister in 1986. If you listen carefully, you can hear the angels playing "Sweet Georgia Brown"!!

The Meadow Links course here has a driving range (one of the best in the area, a teaching pro and a huge pavilion for outings, tournaments, and even weddings!

It fits our marriage for 36 years. Did you ever watch the movie War of Roses" with Michael Douglas? The final scene sums up the entire movie.

Nice post by natureboy about Gerina Piller. I think she is going to win over many more fans!
-
Good post. Payne had switched to a SeeMore putter early in 1999. He then won the AT&T, and of course, the US Open. In the final round at Pinehurst #2, he one-putted 5 of the last 6 greens! His caddy, Mike Hicks said the putt on #16 was "_impossible to read, and impossible to make" since it was a double-breaker. When it dropped in, Hicksie said that he KNEW something SPECIAL was happening!
-
Let me sum it up: almost every golfer has fans and critics (I do not think Arnold has any critics). Some fans are really devoted, and their player can do no wrong. I am a fan of Payne's, but NOT a devoted one! I am fully aware of his weaknesses, and they are even documented in Tracy's biography. Critics who emphasize his weaknesses remind me of the people who used to scream "Fat Jack" because they loved Arnold.

I did not know that. I wonder if the Canadian pro was George Knudsen?

This was supposed to be a nice discussion about what could have been. I had no idea that SOME people would put their own spin on it. Truly strange!
