imo, Shawn Clement or Andrew Rice

First one that came to my mind is Mark Brooks (1996 PGA) Although he does have 7 PGA tour victories under his belt. Probably Beem is the winner here.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit

How about this guy...lol -
What's the point of 1200 bunkers anyway? I wasn't enamored with the golf course as all the networks were...mickey mouse design if you ask me.

Is this the worst golf tip video, ever?
akgolfnut replied to deronsizemore's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Aren't there videos out there by Tom Watson and Sean O' Hair advocating the same thing? Not that I agree, because you do need to slide the hips, just wanted to point out there are pros who say the same thing. -
Eric, thanks, thats awesome. So your head does dip slightly. I was at the range yesterday and struggling. But when I focus on the shoulder down and deep hands, almost exaggerating the feeling, I make great contact. It just feels so strange because I am used to moving off the ball and bring the club up more.
-
Can I get the "left shoulder down" (on the takeaway) concept explained? I understand you shouldn't move off the ball, which creates a level shoulder turn. So is "shoulder down" term used to show the opposite of this, or do you actually move your shoulder down on the take away. Wouldn't my head dip?

Oh, Peter Kostis... (on Dean Wilson)!
akgolfnut replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Kostis should not be analyzing swings on tv if he doesn't know what he is talking about it. I just saw him analyze Wilson's iron swing about an hour ago, and he clearly mentioned Wilson using SnT, and said he tilts back to the right on his downswing, and that's the tilt part of the technique. I'm just learning the swing and have read the book, that is not what I understood the tilt part to be about. Oh, and someone mentioned that Andy and Mike shouldn't have labeled the swing -- from what I have heard (not sure if true or not), Golf Digest said they were not going to print the original article about the swing technique (the one with Baddeley) unless they gave it a name. Andy and Mike balked, and Charlie Wi said "tilt and stacked", so then GD reversed it to say "Stack and Tilt". FWIW. -
keep weight on left foot, narrow stance, cozy up to the ball. When I shank or flub a shot, its because I have set up too far away from the ball.

Best Instruction Book and/or Video?
akgolfnut replied to Floger's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I find this hard to believe, maybe it's because the books I get don't usually have a lot of illustrations -- but, I am in the middle of reading SnT, and I find it has a good amount of pictures and illustrations -- either way, its one of the better books I have read, plus, it is helping my game. I would also recommend Andrew Rice's "It's all about impact', and Shawn Clements DVD and YouTube videos. -
I'm a 30 hdcp and I have an awesome practice swing.
-
I'm sure he's a good teacher, but I didn't like the 'roll the forearms to hit a draw' segment last night. I'm a high handicapper, but that feeling doesn't work for me.

I am halfway through the book, and I also have been reading Andrew Rice's book, which incorporates some SnT principles. I went to the range tonight, and not having read the entire book, I just concentrated on keeping my weight forward. I didn't have much success after one bucket, it was my typical inconsistent swing. Even though it was super hot, I got another bucket, and decided to concentrate more on the left shoulder down and in, and the hands inward. Again, not real consistent, so I thought I would exagerrate the down and in shoulder turn and hands inward feeling. It felt really weird, like I was dipping too much and swinging so flat -- probably I guess because I am so used to turning my shoulders more behind the ball, and taking my arms up -- but I was making crisp contact. Ball flight was not the stock draw, more of a fade, but i was encouraged by the contact. No thins, fatsies, or shanks in the entire bucket -- for me that's unreal. My swing felt more circular, which I guess that is what it is supposed to feel like. Distance was not the greatest, though I attribute that to still learning the swing (and range balls!). Can't wait to get back out there and incorporate the other principles. btw, Andrew Rice's tips on the short game are golden!

Position of right hand on club for right hander?
akgolfnut replied to mazza78's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'd like to bring this thread back to life. The role of the right hand on the grip is also perplexing to me. I've been told that the right should face the target, but with my strong overlap grip, there's no way my right hand can face the target, it ends up underneath the club more. If I interlock, I can get the right hand facing the target, but the palms aren't facing each other. ?????? -
How to improve chipping/pitch shots?
akgolfnut replied to JML22's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
On a different note, what about grip. I've read somewhere (can't remember where) that you should employ a neutral grip on chipping and pitch shots. I do this for chip shots, but pitches, I employ the same strong grip as I do on full swings. I do good on chips, but crappy on pitching. Did I just answer my own question? -
I have the same issue also. Breed's fix, which I guess is technically sound, didn't help me, just caused me to hit fat. I need to get a full turn with my shoulders on the backswing, that helps me keep my shoulders back on the downswing. Check out You tube 'Tom Watson secret of golf swing', he explains it very well.
-
Isn't it all dependent on your grip? If you have a neutral or weak grip, I would think you would have to roll your wrists/forearms at impact to ge the ball square. Corey Pavin is a roller due to his weak grip. But I agree it is a timing issue, and for us amateurs, it would be awfully hard to perfect. If you have a strong grip, then there should be no need to rotate the forearm, unless you really want to hook it. Just my 2cents, I suck at this game, so what do I know.

look at the back of the ball, focus on the target. Looking at the back of the ball helps keep my head behind the ball. Its interesting, with other sports, like baseball and tennis, I have no problem keeping my eye on the ball but focusing on where I want to hit it...yet with golf, somehow it is so hard to focus on the target. I'm getting better, but its been a project.

drill to stop swaying hips and rotate them instead

I posted this on another similar thread, but it bears repeating here. Watch this video...it has helped me tremendously. -
This video helped me, which supplements what tm just posted:

Norm, with what you are saying, at address, is your shaft leaning way forward, sort of like a set forward press? I still don't understand why I am hitting fat with this technique. Went out played 18 the other day, and irons were better, but still hitting behiind the ball with the woods. I wondering if I am not executing the 3rd move correctly, the bump of hips toward the target. I also feel I could be arm swinging too much. In this technique you shouldn't feel you are arm swinging, correct?
-
I'm still working with this, but mixed results. Played 9 today, and some shots were very crisp. But my distance is lacking. Also, I hit some of the worst fat shots ever. Severe chunking off the tee in at least 2 instances. I don't feel like I am releasing too early, and I don't play the ball forward in my stance. Why would I be hitting fat with this method?
-
I have a problem incorporating this into the backswing as one fluid motion. What I did was a forward press before I start my backswing, which put me in the same wrist position as Dante espouses, but I had mixed results. About the woods, you definitely need to turn your hips quicker than normal, or you will block to the right. I just read Clampetts book, what's the difference between his early wrist break and Dante's?

"Extraordinary Golf: The Art of the Possible" by Fred and Pete Shoemaker
akgolfnut replied to iacas's topic in Reading Room
I have two big issues...one is being too ball-bound, the other is my release. On the first issue...I am not consciously trying to hit the ball, I am trying to focus on a target and swing through. I video'd my practice swing and it looks fine. I hit the practice wiffle balls in my backyard fine. But with the ball there, I can't seem to re-create the swinging through feeling. Second issue, I can't seem to get the proper release working. I do a drill where right before impact, you take your right hand off the club and swing through just with the left hand on the club. It's a good drill....the release happens naturally and the ball goes basically straight with a slight draw. But, put my right back on the club, and I am back to slices and mis-hits. According to Shoemaker and his mentor Tim Gallwey (whose book Inner Game I read), I should probably just focus on my left forearm rotating, but not consciously trying to fix the swing....but the whole awareness method is very difficult...it seems it will take a long time. I'm a recreational golfer and just don't get out much to play or practice. Anyway, there's my story... Thanks for any comments.
