I use an old used odyessy putter with an insert that I love. Non metal putters just seem to have a harder feel that I dont like as much. I dont think performance matters either way even though pelz did say something about insert putters might work better. I think its just a preference thing, and those greens at the dicks/golfsmith/whatever store are the best ways of choosing a putter.

Set Recommendation...starting out..
mochila replied to nutsnbolts's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
It all depends on how much you think you will play. When my dad and I started a few yrs ago, he bought name brand clubs that were last years models and ended up dropping around 900 dollars. I think you will be hard pressed to get all new stuff as a full set for much cheaper. I got a 200 dollars dicks set that sucked. It turned out that my dad doesn't play much and the clubs were imo a little bit of a unneeded expense. I on the other hand loved the game and the 200 dollar set was fine while I was just learning. By upgrading later I have only lost a few hundred bucks than If i had gotten nice ones to start, but the original purchase wasnt waste. But I wouldn't want to drop a bunch of benjamins on a game I didnt know if I liked. Get a cheap set(or used) and If you like the game and have a decent swing, go get fitted for some nice ones. Electronic Golf glove to improve your game

Wow, that looks nice. I struggle with grip pressure but it is so hard to judge. Something like this that could quantify it might be great. Looks expensive though. -
Anyone using lob wedge for all greenside chipping?
mochila replied to littlefish's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It all depends on teh lie and the distance to the landing area. If I am just in the fringe, ill hit a 5 or 6 iron. If Im in deep greenside rough about 10 feet from the green Ill play a LW (or in my case a sw bc I am poor) -
I like to go on the practice green of every course i play and practice rolling balls across and trying to stop them on the fringe. It acclimates me to the green speeds and helps me get a good feel for distance while I practice or b4 I go out and play.

Long hitters, where do you practice your drives?
mochila replied to NBGC's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Well, if you consistently hit it over 350 then why the hell aren't you on the long drive competitions. I definitely call BS on that and your 160 lb. friend that carries it over 330. -
Gt: MrMochila Probably will get the game in a few weeks, add me for Halo and Cod if you wish also

I have about 150 bucks to drop and I am trying to decide btw either gap wedge to fill the 12 degree gap between my PW and SW set of lessons at golfsmith/golf galaxy (not sure about how good these are) cheap igolf gps What would you do?

My mom has the adams 13 piece set and loves it. It is definately a great choice for a beginner, great value. As to the set size, id probably go with the bigger one if the extra bens isnt a big deal. Just because if she decides she really likes the game then she wont want to get more clubs. On the other hand if she doesnt need it/ like the game then youve only dropped an extra 200 instead of the possible 500 or more it would cost if she wants something else. The 8 piece set might leave some gaps between irons but that depends on her swing speed. My mom has like a half wedge swing and her 5 and 8 irons like go the same distance. The irons are great and she can keep them for years unless she wants a players set at some point.

Would you buy a mixed set of clubs?
mochila replied to Alex1's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Does anyone think its bad to have a different 3 and 5 wood? -
Weakness: Sand Play, absolutely horrible Strong:Putting, but only relative to the rest of my game. Im not out there holing 40 footer but i probably 3 putt about 3 times per round.
-
If not this because it has to be a car then except that id have to work over 18,000 hours in my current job to buy it.

I can be found up on the XBL playin Halo 3. Lvl 40 in LW, 28 in TS. Gamertag is MrMochila.

My ball striking sucks a fat ****. I struggle with top/fat more than hits on toe/heel. I dont feel like I have a reverse pivot though, I transfer almost all my weight to the back foot at the tob and then transfer it forward on the downswing. WHy would an upright swing cause a reverse pivot?
-
I currently have a very upright swing plane, my irons are probably only about on an 5 oclock to an 11 oclock type plane. (if you look at the swing from the back in relation to a clock). Will I gain anything from flattening it a little bit? What are the pros and cons to a flat vs an upright swing?
-
I have hit off a truestrike mat at the demo bay at Golfsmith. It is possible to hit a fat shot, as the club wont slide into the ball and will slow its movement a little. I didn't hit that many balls off of it though, but I definitely chunked one.

I hate phil mickleson, he is a dick. The "this course is ruining my career" comment at oakmont last year just turned me off. Favorite is Jim Furyk, I love his wierd swing.

What would you do if you won the 20 million lottery?
mochila replied to ks8829's topic in The Grill Room
Well first off, you dont really get 20 million. You can choose either a 10 million lump payout or a gradual payout of 20 million over the next 15 years. Its dumb to take the full amount because the lottery could end or something could happen and you lose your money. Then, you have to pay taxes on the 10 million making it more like 5 million. So its really not as much as it looks like. -
Graphite vs Steel on irons (3-pw)
mochila replied to yeis20's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Better for whom you mean? (I had to, sorry) I use graphite because my swing sucks and I can only swing ~80 with driver. I think the choice is more one of tempo than of swing speed because x stiff graphite shafts are availabile. The biggest difference is the weight, which some people prefer. The choice just comes down to hitting both and deciding if the steel seems to offer more control due to the tempo change. If not, then go with graphite because it will give about 4 or 5 more yards. -
The range I have been going to recently has both mats and grass, but the grass has been closed for a few months while it was reseeded. Yesterday I hit off the mats and did really well but today I hit off of the grass and it was terrible. I struggled with fat shots, and maybe this is because the mat is squishy and more forgiving? Has anyone else had a similar experience?
