Question about buying online and fitting
jrode replied to jrode's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think I might just go into a place like Golf Galaxy and pay the $399 there and get fitted right away on the spot. I guess I'm willing to pay a little bit more knowing that everything will be properly fitted. Does anyone know if you can drop clubs when you're buying at a place like Golf Galaxy? Like if I wanted 4-PW without the GW, would they do that? Just reduce the price down whatever the cost of that individual iron would be? -
Question about buying online and fitting

I hit around the FP's a bit and I found out one of my friends actually had some Nike Sumo irons so I got him to let me try them out at the driving range. These are the only two sets I've got around to trying so far, but I really like the FP's and I didn't notice much else at Golf Galaxy in my price range. In fact, the Sumo's are actually $499 at Golf Galaxy while the FP's are $399. I just don't know which route to go with whatever irons I decide to buy. Obviously you can find great deals online, but it seems like there's a lot involved in fixing them to fit properly if you buy them standard. Where as if I just bought them for their stock price of $399 I'd have them fit properly right away without all the hassle. I don't know how the costs would match up in the end though. -
Question about buying online and fitting

What would you recommend doing? Do places like Golf Galaxy even keep anything other than standard length in stock? -
I found a set of New Cobra 2008 FP Irons on eBay for $319.99 (down to $287.99 with a 10% off coupon I have on eBay) from a seller that I think some of you on here have said is very reputable, The Putterman. Here's what I'm wondering. Can lie, loft and length all be adjusted after purchasing a standard set? I don't know much about club fitting, but I've been told before that I need longer irons, but I'm not sure if that's true. I'm 6'3" so I'm pretty tall and I believe my wrist to floor is about 38" and I think I've looked it up in the past and it's recommended that I need clubs about 1/2" longer. Can length be adjusted after buying standard length clubs without buying all new shafts? And I'm assuming I should just go with regular stiffness as well? I'm just sort of confused on the process. $287.99 would be an absolute steal for me to get brand new irons, but I also want them to fit me right.

I didn't really want to make another new topic, so I figured I'd ask this here and hope someone sees it. I found a set of New Cobra 2008 FP Irons on eBay for $319.99 (down to $287.99 with a 10% off coupon I have on eBay) from a seller that I think some of you on here have said is very reputable, The Putterman. Here's what I'm wondering. I know that lie and loft can be adjusted after I buy the clubs when I go in to get them fit. However, what about length? I've been told before that I need longer irons, but I'm not sure if that's true. I'm not a really huge hitter I don't think, so I don't think I'd need stiff shafts. I can't decide between the Odyssey White Hot Tour #2 or the Odyssey White Hot XG #9. I've putted with both of these putters at Golf Galaxy and honestly, they both feel great and I really like each of them. I just can't make up my mind on which one to go with. The Tour #2 is obviously more expensive and that's really the only con I can think of. Anyone have either of these two putters? Thoughts, opinions? I just need some help.
-
Thanks for all the great opinions and advice so far in this topic. Hopefully I'll get into Golf Galaxy sometime next week and feel up some of the irons and maybe hit some balls with them. The only two I've got a feel for a bit are the Cobra FP's and the Sumo's, but I'll have to check out what else they have and see how those go.

Simple question, do you like Tiger? Personally, I obviously really respect his game and it's amazing what he's done for the game of golf since he's been around. However, I just have a hard time warming up to him. Anytime I see him interviewed he just doesn't seem warm. He's always too serious and it's just hard for me to warm up to him since he shows practically no personality.

So, I'm looking to get a new iron set, but I'll also need to buy a wedge as well. Most of the iron sets I'm looking at are 4-GW. What would be the best setup for me as far as wedges went? Should I just buy one 55 or 56 degree sand wedge and be good to go like that? That would leave me with a PW, GW (49.5 degree) and a 55 or 56 degree sand wedge that I'd buy separately. Would that be the best bet? Or should I just buy the set, ditch the GW and get a 55 or 56 and a 60? I'm not really sure how much I'd use a lob wedge, but I don't know.

The reason I've narrowed it down to these to is that out of what I've looked at, they have sets and drivers that fit my price range the best.

I think Ian Poulter's going to show up and do some damage. 1. Tiger Woods 2. Phil Mickelson 3. Ian Poulter 4. Padraig Harrington 5. Greg Norman

So I'm finally getting to the point where I've got enough money to buy some new clubs (at least a new driver and iron set) and I've decided that both Nike and Cobra have clubs that are in my price range. I'm just wondering on what some of you prefer or what you would recommend. I was looking at the Nike Sumo or CCi Irons which I've found for $399 for a set at some places. I've noticed some comparable Cobra's, but can't remember what kind they were. Anyone know of any comparable Cobra irons? For driver I'm looking at the Nike Sumo Driver and one of the Cobra drivers from a year or two ago I think, again can't remember the name. Basically, can someone with a little more knowledge just give me the run down of these two brands up against each other.

With summer winding down and classes starting again soon, I doubt I'll get out much anymore. I'll be lucky if I get out once more this year. Don't have the funds right now either, especially not after spending $200 on a concert weekend last weekend. Right now I'm just interested in getting to the ski season. But I'll be ready for golf again in the spring. I have enough other hobbies to keep me busy, so that definitely helps in not craving golf too much.

I'd rather take someone who's been playing well and been hot recently over guys that have been playing alright the whole season. Fact is, Rocco has been (other than this past weekend) been playing pretty darn good golf for the past two months.
-
Unfortunately it doesn't look like Rocco is going to be in contention, might not even make the cut. Guess that means I'm 100% behind Phil now.

I'm a high handicapper as you can see and I've been slicing my drives ever since I can remember, but lately I've been much better and haven't hit nearly as many slices. The other day I played 18 and only hit two slices on my tee shots. Now, I pound out a handful or two of perfectly straight, beautiful drives and other times I end up hitting a low, snap hook. This is only with my driver though, irons I usually hit really well. Always straight with a few pushes or pulls, but always a straight flight. Eventually I'd like to be able to play a draw. My question is, right now, should I even worry about it? Or maybe I could try working a draw with my irons?
-
I think with the rain they got up there today the course is going to play a lot easier tomorrow. Hopefully Rocco can get back into contention.

I've been playing the Maxfli Noodle Long & Soft the last few rounds and I love it and think it's a really good ball.

Early shepherds may have used their curved staffs to hit stones in a simple game of "golf" as early as 2,000 years ago. Link

I can't really answer your question, but do you know if Golf Galaxy charges for a fitting if you don't buy from them?

USGA Announces Rules Changes on golf club grooves
jrode replied to Clubchucker's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
All I know is I don't care, I'll still be buying new clubs soon. I suck too much to worry about what's legal and what's not in competitive, professional play. -
Rocco. I saw an interesting stat and I think it was something like seven players who finished runner-up at the US Open went on to win the PGA Championship. I'm pumped for the event too except for the fact I won't be able to see the 3rd and 4th rounds.

They're BAD this year here too. Mosquitos are absolutely worthless and detrimental. I really wish there was a way to get rid of them for good. Not only would it help my golf game, but it'd save the lives of a lot people in third world countries.

Anyone else getting attacked by these little buggers this year? I got eaten up on the course today but remembered through a few holes that I had spray with me. Mosquitos need to go away!
