This article makes a strong case that children and teens should be allowed to live a totally normal life. Once the at-risk population has had the opportunity to get a vaccine, there should be no restrictions on kids. Getting them back to a totally normal life should be top priority. It inadvertently makes the case that kids really don't need the vaccine, saying they already have vaccine level protection (though vaccination could reduce their chances of transmitting it).

https://twitter.com/tylerblack32/status/1372572093573783555?s=20 FWIW it looks like teen suicide is actually down during the pandemic. Good news. Perhaps less bullying/peer issues.

I never said anything about masks. I am of the opinion that we should all wear masks in indoor public spaces until everyone has had an opportunity to get a vaccine (some are saying July 4). I am talking about restrictions on businesses and schools. People losing their livelihoods. Kids falling behind because they aren't in school. etc. Well said, Dave. That's the debate that needs to happen. The virus ended up being right in the middle. If it was more severe, there wouldn't be much argument against restrictions (people would stay home without being forced because they wouldn't want to get it). If it was less severe it would be over. But it's right there in the middle with no clear, easy answer. Here's a good article on the issue, read all the way to the end. Highlights several things, including differences between states, and how these restrictions really hit teens the hardest. The Lost Year: What the Pandemic Cost Teenagers In Hobbs, New Mexico, the high school closed and football was cancelled, while just across the state line in Texas, students seemed to be living nearly normal lives. Here’s how pandemic school…

I think golf needs more of this. I think this is a great way for local courses to drum up interest imo. It creates buzz. They said this bowling alley is now booked for months. (The video wasn't just staged, it took 5 takes to get right. It was a full production). Drones or not, local courses need to draw interest, and doing any type of video marketing is going to help. Gotta get on people's feeds.

You still have not offered an argument on the topic at hand. Still stewing over words, tone, inflection, etc. I'm focused on facts. Are government mandated restrictions worth it? What is gained and lost when we intervene in such a way that restricts private businesses from operating fully? What do we lose when we keep kids home from school for a year? Is it all worth it?

I'm not sure it matters. If the goal is to increase viewership for the LPGA, I doubt anyone new is going to tune in because they are getting a few more eagles on par 5s. A winning score of -15 versus -20? Not gonna move the needle. However, I enjoy watching LPGA golf, and I voted the courses are too easy. Almost every course they play brings very little trouble into play. As @iacas said, they usually have center green pins on large greens. Tuck the pins more and shorten the course would make things more entertaining for the average fan, but I doubt it would draw many more viewers.

You always attack my word choices rather than the content of my statements. Telling. Is 1.68% worth the loss of economic activity over the last year? (Is that better?)
-
What is the trade-off for being 1.68% better than another state? Completely collapsing your local economy for 1.68% difference? Is it worth it? Again, you have to look at both sides of the equation. Looking strictly at virus numbers and ignoring the other impacts is too narrowly focused. Right. People can decide their own risk tolerance. If they want to stay home until a vaccine, their choice!
-
Ok. Let me rephrase the question. Do they work well enough to justify their trade-offs? That's the question we should be able to debate openly.
-
This is the main point that should be debated and studied. Do restrictions work? If so, which ones? If not, we should eliminate them. Restrictions are costly to businesses, education, etc. They should be used only when absolutely necessary and proven to be effective. Perhaps there is strong science behind them, but the way the "open" and "closed" states are trending in tandem it's not real clear they work at all. I edited to add the graph after I saw your question. More helpful to see both.

I'm still in. Less than 5% of my portfolio, but it's booming. Love to see it. In fairness, I have no idea where this will all lead, but it's fun to participate.

Recent data showing that people in Michigan are going out and about at roughly the same levels as 2019 now. Dramatic increase in the last month. They aren't waiting for restrictions to lift or full vaccine rollout. Edited to add graph comparing case numbers. Does seem to correlate a bit recently, but people were largely staying home during the huge spike in October/November.

Remember "two weeks to slow the spread"? They've been changing the deadline constantly for a year. The metrics for reopening keep changing. There's no clear "finish line" out there for any agency. They won't even say "once cases get below X threshold we can reopen." Maybe a specific date isn't ideal to promise, but I'd like to see more metrics like "Once cases are below 50 per million we can fully reopen" or something like that. This feels endless right now because they keep changing the goal. My kids are back on virtual school again. Two months ago they said that once teachers were vaccinated that we'd stay open in person for good. Well the teachers are vaccinated and we just shut down for a few asymptomatic cases amongst students. They changed the rules in two months. Never ends. Back and forth. Brutal on kids.

Their choice, their risk. Shouldn't hold the rest of us back.
-
They're saying all adults will have the opportunity to get a vaccine by May 31. School starting in Aug/Sept should be no issue whatsoever. By July 4 everyone should have received two doses if they wanted to. The message should be we fully reopen with zero restrictions on July 4. The only reason any restrictions go beyond July 4 is that we find the vaccine is not as effective as promised.
-
Nope. I refuse to accept this. Masks are a huge deal in schools. When you can't see people's faces it limits your ability to connect with them. This may seem small, but it is HUGE for kids and teens. We need to lift all restrictions on kids and teens ASAP. Let them live normal lives. You want to walk around with a face diaper on forever, be my guest, but leave my kids out of it. This virus is almost no threat to anyone under 18, and with vulnerable people vaccinated, it's no longer a threat that they pass it to them. Let the kids get back to normal life. Fall should be 100% free and normal for schools and kids.

Judging others' souls is a dangerous game for which none of us are qualified. Way above my pay grade. There is simply so much we don't know about a person's intent, thoughts, etc. to make sound judgements. There are plenty of people here who love Tiger Woods but also think JT shouldn't be forgiven. TW caused substantial, direct harm to many people's lives through his transgressions. Most seem to have forgiven him for such things. TW also seems to have maintained his friendship with JT. Should we judge those who keep company with those whose "souls" we deem unworthy? This is a very difficult road to travel down if we anoint ourselves to be judges of others in this way. And what if we get things wrong? What if we can't see our own biases? Our each of us completely innocent? When I was a kid, the f** word was used as a playground insult pretty regularly. I can easily see how that can settle into your mental vocabulary with zero thought given to the meaning or intent of such a word.

You missed my point. I was saying that the JT situation was a GOOD example of how these things can play out. Ralph Lauren was free to drop their sponsorship, which they did. But everyone else accepted his apologies and moved on, and everyone for the most part seems OK with that. So often similar situations turn out much differently.

I'm talking about taking away people's livelihoods, etc. Many people may dislike JT from this, and that's fair. They can dislike him forever if they want. But I have also found that people who have made mistakes and made amends can be the most trustworthy people in existence. They learned a humbling lesson.

I don't know why 4+ hours ever became a standard round. That's a glacial pace to me. That being said, I've been in foursomes where one player easily adds an hour to our round. It's mostly mannerisms and little things that add up. They won't be ready when it's their turn. They look too long for lost balls. They take a long time to cover and put away clubs. They talk when they should be hitting. They park in the wrong locations around greens, taking longer to walk back, etc. It's all of these things and it's maddening.
-
Ralph Lauren missed a big spot this week. Could've been front and center like JT's other sponsors. JT was sincere and apologetic and most people accepted that and allowed life, and JT, to carry on. Probably one of the best examples of how these situations should be handled. People make mistakes, but if they are truly repentant, then forgiveness should be offered.

I was pulling for Westwood, but love to see JT get the win. I was hoping we'd get to see that big UPS logo all year. Thought maybe they'd stop showing Westwood on TV once he was out of the lead. OT: Ralph Lauren could've had their logo front and center this week. Big miss.

This is ignorance. However, they should market the vaccine as our ticket to freedom. I have yet to see explicit marketing stating that it's our way out. They say "Even if you get the shot, you still must wear a mask and social distance!" That doesn't sell it very well to the skeptics. The data shows that fully vaccinated people are no longer a threat to others, even unmasked. They should explain the real reason why vaccinated people still need to mask up (because it's just too hard to track those who have and have not been vaccinated). I think they finally stopped sanitizing the flagsticks at PGA Tour events. The theater surrounding sanitizing everything got out of hand for awhile. I still see a lot of it. Simply over the top measures for a virus we have known for months doesn't really spread on surfaces.

Remember all of us unvaccinated dudes having dinner at Outback in May of last year? Good times. Strange how things seemed to be returning to "normal" then only to backslide and now return to that same spot ten months later. They seem hesitant to say that vaccinated people can mingle freely with unvaccinated people. That's where the real freedom comes in. I wonder why they won't allow that? Vaccinated people can still spread the virus? Or they aren't sure?

This was some entertaining golf this week. Interesting course, good personalities on the leaderboard. Top notch!
