To each his own. I've never even tried a Nike because I don't like how they look. I've tried and owned several Callaway drivers also but never really liked them and obviously they make fine equipment. Also had an Intech Blue Thunder driver that was like 60 bucks new that I hit really well. Whatever works.

I know this frustration well. I've drastically cut down my iron mishits by concentrating on making a divot after the ball. Same for the hybrids. For all my clubs I take practice swings before addressing the ball and won't address the ball until I"ve had a practice swing that properly simulates what I want my actual swing to be. Usually takes 2 or 3 swings.

How to practice taking a divot on the range?
deafheaven replied to Slice57's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I always take practice swings before I address the ball (talking about actually during a round here and not practice). I don't address the ball until I've had a proper practice swing. This helps a lot. -
I've really come around to being a Mickelson fan. Really like his dvd "secrets of the short game". Tiger almost puts me off now. It's not him so much as it is the media that follows him around like a puppy dog, regardless of where he is on the leaderboard. Also his fans who yell "get in the hole" as he tees off on a par 5. His caddy's remarks a while bag were totally out of line and reflect on him also. Don't like how he throws his clubs around sometimes either. That said, I admire his "family first" attitude and admire his relationship with his dad. Phil seems like a real family guy also. I always cheer for the underdog. Somebody like Mediate. I'm a big Moe Norman fan also God rest. Can't say I'm a JD fan. He's set a bad example. I am rooting for him now although I don't care to enable him. I think he's been enabled for a long long time. He needs to prove himself now. And then of course there's Arnold Palmer. Man, would I love to play a round with him.

3 wood is longer. Harder to control. I've beeen tempted to purchase a 4 wood for this reason.

You are showing your youth a little here RHPM. Y'know there are some who don't like kids on the course, or teenagers, or old people, or women. Golf is the one game where people of all ages and abilities can play against each other. No need to segregate. In fact, golf has a history of segregation and snobbishness. It's been a pleasure to see it starting to be played by the masses. I'm 47 and only took up this game 4 years ago. Part of the reason it took me so long to start and part of the reason I pretty much exclusively play with my buddies and avoid men's night or being an add on to an existing group is that type of attitude. No need for the fat jokes either. Just saying.

How do you make 3 footers?
deafheaven replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
My buddies and I went to the putting green before our tee off last weekend to warm up and had a putting contest with the winner getting a mulligan during the round. -
Just bought the R9 460! I love it!
deafheaven replied to nutsnbolts's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Good to know because I should have my 460 on Friday. -
Almost forgot. I had this experience once where a new driver (original Callaway square head - can't remember the name) just wasn't performing for me and I ended up selling it. The guy I sold it to found a small crack in the hossel. Sent it to Callaway and they replaced it with no questions asked and no receipt. Got to hand it to Callaway customer service.

When I have that problem I give my club to my buddy to hit (he hits much further than me). That confirms the problem is with me and not the club This has always worked except for one time. I purchased a callaway heavenwood hybrid once after just crushing it (for me) on the driving range shot after shot. Always straight and always long. Think I could do that on the course? Nope. Ended up trading it to him for his 2,3 and 4 hogan hybrids. Right after that he couldn't hit it either. We now refer to it as the "cursed" club.

How do you make 3 footers?
deafheaven replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Don't be tentative. Hit it firmly into the cup. I also think that people practice their long putting too much when it is the 3 and 4 ft putts that should take up most of your practice time. Those 3 footers need to be automatic. I've been missing some myself lately and it is because I haven't been practicing and therefore have been too tentative on the short putts. I practice 3 and 4 ft putts in the house when I'm bored or when commercials are on when I'm watching tv. I don't practice long putts at all anymore inside the house. -
Two for me. One is my gps due to the confidence it gives you knowing you have the right club selection. With that though I'm now hitting more bunkers where before I tended to not use enough club and ended up short of the green and any greenside bunkers. Which brings me to my Cleveland cg 12 wedge. I've always used a pw from the sand and adding this club to my bag has made a tremendous difference.

Off the Tee... Draw of Fade, which is the safest go to Shot
deafheaven replied to kuteazn1's topic in Golf Talk
Very illuminating. I will say though that for me, my fade can turn into a slice pretty easily while my draw ends up a straight shot and only occassionally a hook. When I say I aim at the hazzard I want to avoid, I only mean I aim at that general area. For example, a bunker on the right hand side of the fairway within driver range, I'll aim just left of that bunker and play a draw. There are times I do aim directly at the hazzard however. That will get me in more trouble when hitting a draw because my miss tends to go straight as an arrow. -
Golf Balls Question: Is it Possible?
deafheaven replied to Golden's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I believe the TP red was designed for faster swingers while the E5 was designed for slower swing speeds. Could be wrong though. -

Now that I'd love to see. We'll call it Little Big Break or The Thrilla in the Midda. -
Off the Tee... Draw of Fade, which is the safest go to Shot
deafheaven replied to kuteazn1's topic in Golf Talk
I know I'm a high handicapper and there's much much better players on here than me, but shouldn't the shape of the fairway determine which is the better shot to select? Of course the location of the hazzards in the fairway are also a determining factor. I sometimes like to aim for where I do NOT want to be and then either draw or fade from that target. -
Stripped screw in R9 Driver...

I haven't had a problem and I've changed the settings many many times. The click you'll hear is quite loud... you'll know it when you hear it. -
Slice vs. shaft stiffness does it matter?
deafheaven replied to YamahaJay's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm going to suggest that your slice is most likely due to your swing path (outside to inside). As I've stated in previous posts, I corrected my horrendous slice by learning to hit a draw (inside to outside swing path). If your swing path has you coming down on the side of the ball then you are imparting a lot of side spin on said ball. -
My Swing and driver Distances
deafheaven replied to right handed phil mickelson's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Would have loved to have seen this using a gps device but who cares. You have a nice swing with nice tempo and a shoulder turn I only wish I had. And under pressure of being filmed too. Looked pretty solid to me. I think you've handled yourself pretty well in your posts also. Keep on swingin' there youngster. -
So I see this Cleveland "Niblick" at the golf shop
deafheaven replied to c. lassiter's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
That's rather presumptuous don't you think? It's not a waste of one of 14 available if you are able to chip better with it. Further, it's not a chipper per se. It has the distance of a pitching wedge. Is it the name that bugs you? The shape? I don't get the negative comments on this club. -

deafheaven replied to chspeed's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Where you play matters a lot also. It can get pretty cool up here in Northern Ontario, particularly at the beginning and end of the season. I'm going to assume I'd be a little longer if playing in, say, Phoenix. -

deafheaven replied to c. lassiter's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I own one. I don't like it for full shots so it becomes a pitcher/chipper for me. It's a nice club but it does take some getting used to. I like it for pitching/chipping but so far have had trouble judging distances with it. Not that this type shot comes up too often but because of it's weight and it's short shaft, I've had success hitting a backwards shot with it (like when your ball is up against a tree giving you no place to stand). Also eats through thick rough. I've taken it out of my bag for now but I suspect it will end up back in there after I've had some time to work with it. -

deafheaven replied to chspeed's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
No reason to apologize. You seem like a good dude. I think it's pretty typical for people to overestimate their average distance. And then, even if you are trying to be accurate and honest with yourself, a gps or rangefinder can be pretty illuminating. I look forward to your re-appraisal. As a short hitter (average 200 yds) I can say I've yet to play with anybody averaging even 250 yds, even those I've witnessed occasionally hitting 300 yds. Not saying those golfers don't exist... they certainly do... but it's a definite minority. They say the average male averages 200-210 yds. Going by the people posting here, it's 250 or 260. -
Driver technology has changed so much particularly when it comes to negating a slice. At this point I'm much more accurate and consistent with my driver as opposed to my 3W.

Do you buy your driver new or used?
deafheaven replied to SteveSimp's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I, foolishly I admit, buy everything new pretty much without even shopping around. That said, our local golf store price matches to golftown so at least I don't get totally fleeced. I can't walk into a golf store without some shiny new club talking to me. "buy me, buy me" it says. Just got laid off though so I guess those days are over.
