Wedges, match to iron set or not?
elvis14 replied to Puttin4Bird's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks for the responses guys. boogielicious (nice name, BTW) to answer your question, I think I'm more comfortable with a bigger gap between the GW and the SW. With my current set a full swing with my PW goes about 110, my GW goes about 95 and my SW goes 85. Seems like I find myself looking for 100 yards way too often . With the G15 PW being a 45 degree, I could see a 50/56 setup being useful I just hope that the distance of a 50 degree CG15 wedge would be around 10 - 15 yards shorter than a G15 PW. Also, after reading the posts here, I obviously need to go read about bounce again to make sure I understand it correctly. -
Wedges, match to iron set or not?
elvis14 replied to Puttin4Bird's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was at the range Saturday working with a club fitter on a new set of irons. After hitting a bunch of clubs with various shafts and using the Mizuno shaft optimizer, we settled on a set of Ping G15's (red dot, stiff AWT shaft). This wasn't a big surprise to me as I've hit the G10 and G15 irons a bunch over the last year at demo days and in Golfsmith. I'm confident right now that I can order the G15's and be happy. Two things are still bothering me. First, I've always used regular flex shafts (or course I'm also in consistent with my irons ). The shaft optimizer put me using a stiff shaft (stock AWT stiff, S300, PX 5.5). I'm going to go back this week and hit the regular and stiff and see what works best. I didn't hit any regular flex shafts with the G15 because I was hitting other clubs as well (especially the X-22 and AP1). When we finished talking about irons we started talking about wedges. He recommended I get the pitching wedge with the G15's and buy a Gap and Sand wedge with less bounce. We were looking at the Cleveland CG15's (he also had Vokeys and Mizuno's there). My concern is with wedges having appropriate gap between the PW and the GW (if I know the GW loft, I can figure out the SW). The G15's PW has 45 degrees of loft (the 9 iron 40). We were talking about either a 52/56 combo or a 54/58. I'm concerned that I'll have too big of a gap between my PW and my GW and I can't really get the wedges to figure it out (without taping one up which I hate doing). At the same time because the clubs are different, it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Anyone face a similar situation? Advice? I closed on my previous house on Friday and now that I don't have 2 mortgages, I'm really looking forward to buying irons. I really feel good about the G15's. Thanks for reading -
Interesting points. Ray Allen had a bunch of days off then played game 1, had 3 more days off and played game 2, then had 1 day off and played game 3. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Ray played tired last night. He was incredible Sunday night and I loved watching him light it up but on just 1 day of rest between game 2 and game 3, he was really awful. Maybe he wasn't tired but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that he might have been because the schedule was more compressed for game 3. KG is averaging 15 and 8 in the playoffs. I wouldn't call that mediocre but could do more, he used to be that good. You can't bring up the 25 he had in game 3 as an argument unless you want to bring up the 6 he had in game 2. I hope game 4 is fun to watch. Consistent officiating would be good and I don't mind a bunch of fouls being called if it keeps the game cleaner. If I want to watch wrestling, I'll watch old tapes of myself

The Celtics won game 2 with heroic efforts from both Rondo and Ray Allen. It doesn't bode well that they need that kind of effort from 2 guys to pull out a game.
-
I wouldn't say they defy any norms. They pretty much held KG back and let him take his time getting as healthy as possible for the playoffs. They have a really good team and when you add in a somewhat healthy and well rested KG you get a real contender (obviously at this point iti's either them or the Lakers).

It was a good trade. JC is a servicable QB but he's just not quick enough (release, feet, decision making) to be an elite QB. We don't have a youngster ready to take over. So we need a QB that can help us win more now until we find someone to groom for the future. McNabb always killed the Redskins so haivng him play with us keeps me from being pissed twice a year at him having his best games against us.

The best post season hands down is the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and it's not even close. The NBA playoffs are much better than the NHL playoffs. The NHL is still playing? Who knew? Anyone that doesn't think the NBA is good basketball 1) hasn't watched the last couple of years and 2) doesn't know basketball.

Apparently the rule has changed from "if you get 7 T's you have to sit out a game" to "if you have 6 T's, you do what ever you want and the refs won't T you up because you'd have to miss a game". Why is that Celtics team so hard to like?

I'm a Redskins fan and have been since the early 70's (when I was about 5 years old). I like the way we cleaned house this year. We did a good job with the draft. Bringing in McNabb was a good move. I like JC but it was time for him to move on. I know better than to get all excited and boast about what we may or may not win but I'm looking forward to the season and seeing if the changes translate to wins. Is there any way to fix the title of this thread and put the 's' in Redskins? It's always nice hearing from other Redskins fans and I hate the Cowboys and Giants and their fans (when it comes to football anyway)!

The G10 irons are great looking irons. Don't like looks of the G-15's as much. The ping pictures is a really nice lookig iron as well. Definately not ugly, however.

The new Callaway X-24's are now making the list.

I wear Oakley half jackets....except when I'm golfing. For some reason I golf worse with sun glasses on (depth perception loss, I suspect) plus I'm never comfortable wearing a hat and sunglasses together. The golf lenses do make me wonder if I should try sunglasses on while golfing again (and just put up with being a little less comfortable).

Am I OCD, or does everyone do this?
elvis14 replied to Bullitt5339's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You are OCD. Most guys I know clean their clubs a couple of times a year whether they need it or not. This is golf forum filled with golf nuts. The responses you get here are going to be a bit skewed IMHO -
Great to see Duke rise to the top and win a great tournament. Hey jest, look on the bright side, with all 5 of those guys bailing, you can once again witness a great turnaround at Ky (from top 10 to super lousy). You should find yourself some UNC fans to talk to, they'll tell you what to expect next year. Congrats on bringing in coach Cal, he's obviously moving your program in the right direction (unless word of all those guys leaving is just insinuations and inuendos).

As a Duke fan living in NW Raleigh I'm about as happy as one can be with the outcome of the tournament. Duke just kept getting better each week as the tournament progressed. The night they pounded WVa, they would have beat any team in the country by double digits. I gained a lot of respect for Butler and Baylor in this tournament. They were both great teams with great fans and I look forward to seeing them play in the future. If Singler stays, look for Duke to be ranked #1 in the country to start the season next year. How's that crow? The inferior conference (ACC) has won 5 of the last NCAA tournaments.

You did great. The Callaway X series are good game improvement irons. I'm still a high handicapper and I love my TM Hybrids and my 2-ball putter. Heck I really like NXT's as well. Enjoy.

Titleist DT Solo Returns
elvis14 replied to snowman0157's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
The DT SoLo was one of my favorite balls. I'm happy to hear they are returning. Add me to the list of people that didn't have time to test "roll" vs. "carry" versions and just played something else. I'll buy some DT Solo's if they are the same as the old ball. -
I've been hitting clubs for a while trying to make a similar decision. My short list was the MX-100, Cally X-22, Ping G-10. I was waiting for the G15's to come out then I bought a house so I had to wait. I'm hoping to buy something early this year (once my old house sells). Last night I was comparing the X-22 to the Diablo Edge. They are very similar. Personally, I liked the MX-100 but didn't like the MX-950 nor did I like the MX-1000 (hit them both inside Golfsmith and on the range at a Demo day). Most of my clubs are Taylor Made but I just don't seem to like the feel of the R9 or the '09 Burner. I hit the AP1 at a demo day and was very surprised. It was raining that day so I expected to have problems hitting them....I didn't, they were great. I'm going to take a serious look at the AP1's before I buy anything. Eventually I relized that the clubs that I like (excpet the AP1) were all very similar. My advice, hit what you can, create a short list. By the time you have a short list you'll discover that you can't go wrong with any of them IMHO.

Out with the old in with the new
elvis14 replied to Boeing777's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I remember reading that the G15's don't hit as high as the G10's. Last year when I was ready to buy I waited on the G15's because of that. I have a high trajectory with any club so I was worried that I would really sky the ball with the G10's. At the same time, every time I hit the G10's they seemed to fit me pretty well. Hate that I didn't get to buy last year but I'm looking forward to hitting this year's clubs and overthinking another club buying decision -
Out with the old in with the new
elvis14 replied to Boeing777's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
A couple of months ago, I was at a Demo day. I went there to hit the G15's. Of course I hit lots of other clubs as well. The biggest surprise to me was the AP1. It really felt great and as a high handicapper I didn't expect to like a Titleist. Of course the g10 and g15 were also something that I really liked. What is it that you like more about the AP1's that prompted you to replace the G10's? I ask because every time I've hit the G10's (demo days and golf shops) they are just great. I unexpectedly bought a house in November so I had to put my irons purchase on hold for a while. -
I never liked Coach Knight as a coach. But just because he couldn't control his temper as a coach doesn't mean what he said wasn't true. I agree with what he said, even if he is a jackazz. As for the hiring of coach Cal, I'll state things a bit differently. I have much more respect for the Ky basketball program than I do for coach Cal. That's why you should be embarassed that your program hired the guy. A great, tradition rich program just hired a guy that's not great and isn't tradition rich. There's more to a basketball program and to building and maintaining a rich tradition than wins and losses. Cal will get you wins in the short term. Hope I'm not coming across as too obnoxious, I simply don't think Cal is one of the "good guys" and I know and respect how passionate Ky fans are about your hoops (I'm the same way about Duke hoops). Either way, your team has a great shot at taking it all this year. John Wall is fun to watch and an incredible player. 9F

I'd love to see Duke improve to the point where they get a number one seed. Although I hope Duke wins the best team I've seen so far is UK. I'm kind of embarrassed for UK fans, however. It's a shame to bring in a guy like Cal. when you have such a rich history. Coach Knight's comments were right on the money. Ky might win it this year but at what cost? Texas and Kansas are also very good. Mostly I'm really enjoying this season. Last night was great. Duke (my favorite team) beat BC by 20 then Clemson (where I went to grad school) crushed UNC CH.

These two responses really tell the story. As flanagan mentions we are all different. I have always had better luck hitting a driver than a 3w. My R7 460 has a big forgiving face and as long as I remember not to over swing, it really does a nice job of keeping me in the fairway. Sounds like mellojoe is the opposite of me when it comes to the Driver. That's cool, the many variances make this game fun! One thing it seems most agree on, however, is that for a beginner the 3i (and even the 4i) just aren't a good idea (heck I've been playing for years and have no intention of ever putting a 3i back in my bag).
-
As a beginner, you should take the 3i and the 4i out of your bag (maybe even that pesky 5i) IMHO. As someone else pointed out, hybrids are easier to hit anyway. I eventually took the 3w out of my bag, the risk/reward just wasn't worth it for me.

A good round of golf will do it every time. Leave the mat crap on your clubs, make a tee time and go play. When you are done, the mat crap will be off of all the clubs you used during that round. If there are still clubs with mat crap on them, I suggest you make a tee time at a different course and play again. Repeat as many times as necessary
