  1. I've been shopping for irons this summer. Ended up not buying any because I decided to wait for the G15's to come out. I pretty much disagree with everything "Lean, Mean" said. Not that he's wrong, but different clubs work better for different players. I didn't find the Burners to be better than the G10's in any category (again, for me). The G10's just hit great, feel great, look great. I've hit the Burners on multiple occasions (look at my sig if you want to know what I think of TM) but I just don't like them and I don't hit them as well as the G10's (or the Cally X-22's or the Miz. MX-100's). To each his own. Seriously, find a golf shop take a few swings and see which ones feel better for you. Chances are you can't go wrong with either.
  2. 1) Ping G10, G15 2) Callaway FT-i, iq 3) TM R9 460 4) Mizuno MX-700 I know that's 4 but I hit that MX-700 a few times and I was really impressed. Note you could just find yourself a used R7 460 (see sig below )
  3. I wear Oakleys and I've had fake ones in the past. Knew they were fake, bought them to play sand volleyball in (I'm tough on shades in the sand). I don't mind fakes but they should tell you they are fakes. Also, the fakes I bought were $14. I don't wear them while playing (they mess with my depth perception). Recently I took my 7 year old out for her first round. Had my Oakleys on top of my hat. Had fun with my daughter, but it was an expensive round, as the glasses fell off my hat sometime during the round.
  4. IMHO you should put the new irons in your bag, put the old one's in your garage and never look back. You may get worse before you get better, that's golf.
  5. LOL, nice. Just goes to show that different people have different preferences. A couple of friends of mine have MX-900's and I've hit them and liked them but for some reason, I've never liked the 950's. When they came out and had the hybrids, I kinda assumed I'd buy some since I liked my friends 900's and I love hybrids. I've hit the 950's in various golf shops and outside at a range, etc. BTW, my short list right now is MX-100, Callaway X-22, Ping G-10 (and I'm waiting to get my hands on the G15's). Most days I realize I'll be happy with any one of these and I should just go get fitted and get it over with
  6. The 100's are cast, the 200's are forged but they are also less forgiving. I wish they had the shape of the 100's in a cast club. I'm shopping for irons right now and have hit the MX-100's and the MX-950s multiple times and I can tell you that the MX-100s feel better to me. The cast vs. forged isn't the only thing that affects feel. Even though they are cheaper, the 950's didn't even come close to making my short list (the MX-100's did) forged or not. Right now I've put iron shopping on hold until I can hit the Ping G15's. If I had to buy irons today I'd buy G10's.
  7. Wow is this a disappointing thread. I was really hoping someone had more information about the G15's. The other dates I've seen for the G15's has been in September so to see a July date is great. As for aesthetics, to each their own. There are some older Ping irons that don't do it for me. The G10 iron's are art. As for Mizuno, the MX-100 and MX-200's look great. I really don't like the looks of the Cally X-22's on address but I'm still considering them b/c they hit so well. Everyone has likes or dislikes but if I hit it really well, I'll game a butt-ugly club in a heartbeat.
  8. I'm shopping new irons. I've hit the G-10's two times including this last Saturday. I've hit a bunch of other irons as well. Right now the G-10's are at the top of my list. On Saturday, there's a Demo day not far from where I'm at so I intend to go hit everything on my short list (G10, X22,Mx100) and make a decision. The reason the G10's are on the top of my list is that they just hit more consistently than the others. They just seem really easy to hit and really make me feel confident. From a feel perspective, they just feel solid to me. If I had to make the decision today, it'd be the G10's. If you get yours in and hit them, I'd love to hear your feedback. I really hope I can figure out what I want on Saturday as I'm pretty geeked about finally getting irons that are fitted to me!
  9. I'm in the market for some game improvement irons and have hit quite a few lately. You really need to swing a handful and see what feels good to you. My short list right now: MX-100, MX-200, Ping G-10, Callaway X-22. Someone mentioned the Ping Rapture, I haven't hit those as they are more $$ than I want to spend. That list above is what felt pretty good to me, hope you can find what feels good to you.
  10. My advice, buy the MX-200's. Ignore the blue if you need to (I like it, myself) or take it off like others have. Stick with the MX series, don't let the lower handicap players get you into a set of irons that don't match your playing habits. I have playing habits like yours. I'm considering at the MX-100, MX-200, Ping G-10 and Callaway X-22's. I've hit all of them and some others, these are the ones that made my short list. If you have yet to break 100, then buying the MX-200 (vs the MX-100) would be purchasing a higher level of club that'll allow you to progress. Basically, you wouldn't need more "players' irons until you took 20 strokes off your average score!
  11. I have had good luck with used golf balls both from Ebay and Golfsmith. Golfsmith sells boxes of "Reloaded" NXT's for $10. The only thing that worries me about the seller you've pointed out is the process of stripping off and re-applying the clear coat. For me, I'd rather just have balls that have been found, cleaned and repackaged. It would be nice if I knew for sure that the reloaded balls weren't my own
  12. I've hit both the MX-100 and MX-200. I found the MX-100's to be more forgiving. When hit right , I agree that the MX-200 felt great. For me, the MX-100's would be my choice. If I were a better player, I'd look to the MX-200 but I'll take the move forgiving of the 2 at this time. Note, of the clubs I've hit, I also liked the Ping G-10 and the Callaway X-22.
  13. I think you are right about being happy with any of them. Lately I've been thinking I should just go and hit them 1 more time and make a decision because there isn't really a wrong choice. With the MX-100's how they blend with my current hybrids seems like even more of an issue since they have hybrids with the set. At the same time, if I can hit the Mizuno hybrids like I can my TMade's then I think I'd have more consistent distances and my shorter TM hybrids would come out of the bag. That's a good point. A friend of mine did just that at a local pro shop. He bought a mixed set of MX-25's and MX-900's. The place he bought from is recommended as a good Mizuno fitter....naturally it's at least a 40 min drive from my house so it's hard to make it there during the week
  14. thumpar, thanks for the additional data points. The one thing I didn't mention is that taking the time to hit different irons, making demo days, etc. is fun. I'm looking forward to hitting a few more clubs and hitting some clubs again. I missed a Ping demo day in Durham Saturday and was bummed. Luckily I'm more interested in getting the right clubs than I am in getting clubs right now so I'll keep having fun with this (something I didn't do last time I bought a used set off ebay).
  15. I posted this response in another thread about the MX-100's: I'm shopping for new irons and have hit a few. Last month I went to a demo day that and hit several sets of irons, including the MX-100. I also hit the MX-200, MX-950, Callaway X-22's and X-22 tours, and some Adams clubs at that demo day. Since then I have it the Ping G-10 and the Cobra SZ's and TM R7's and Burners. When I attended the demo day, I hadn't picked up a club in months and I hadn't done anything since a knee surgery I had March 12th (microfracture surgery on my left knee). I say that because I was swinging, terribly that day. What I took away was the answer to "what clubs would be good on my worst day" The answer to that question was the MX-100. These clubs were the most forgiving of the bunch. The forged MX-200, when hit just right, felt amazing. I didn't hit too many just right. The MX-100's felt good when they were well struck and they were very forgiving. In addition, the hybrids hit pretty well (I carry 3 hybrids and hit them alot so I'm wondering if buying the ones that come with the MX-100's would be a waste of $$). Here's a few thoughts on what I've hit so far: MX-100 - very forgiving game improvement club, really liked these, on my short list MX-950 - I really wanted to like these but I just didn't hit them well at all (see above) MX-200 - less forgiving than the MX-100, feel great when hit right Adams - I was really surprised at how little I liked these clubs. I mean I really didn't like the way they felt at all. I need to hit them again now that my knee is better and I've played a few rounds. X-22 - I've never hit Callaway irons before, I always look at them and decide against hitting them. I was surprised at how much I liked these irons, they are on my short list. X-22 tour - aren't that different than the X-22 but I didn't hit them as well. Ping G-10 - hitting from mat indoors these felt amazing, looked amazing, on my short list Cobra SZ - hit the same day as the Ping G-10, they didn't compare well, just didn't feel very good to me TM R7 - hit indoor, hit OK, didn't make my short list TM Burner - hit indoor, hit OK, didn't make my short list I really wanted to like the MX-950's (on sale) and MX-200's (forged) but it was the MX-100 that seemed to fit my swing. I really wanted to like the TaylorMade Burner (I hit lots of TM stuff now) but they just didn't feel as good. The Ping G-10 and Callaway X-22's were nice surprises. Right now my short list is: MX-100, X-22, G-10. I'm going to continue to hit clubs (including these 3) and see if my short list changes. Then I'll go to a range/fitter and hit the short list a bunch until I get it figured out. I doubt I'd go wrong with any of the 3 sets on my short list and that inlcudes the MX-100's asked about (which are $100 cheaper than the Ping's and Callaways). As I read boards about clubs eventually people just say "get out and hit some clubs and see what feels good to you" so I'm trying to do just that. Looks like I could get the Pings and Callaway in 4-GW instead of 3-PW as well and that's a good option for me. Just my $.02.
  16. Been playing with friends who have GPS and range finders of late. For me , I'll buy a GPS unit one day. I really didn't care much for the range finder on the course. Obviously, you can ping any distance with a range finder but the GPS is just so easy to use and gives me the information I want most of the time (front, pin, back, dist to traps and doglegs, etc). My friend that has his Bushnell loves it. My friend that has the range finder loves it. My friend that has the Golflogix GPS loves it. To each their own Just my $.02.

  18. See, this is the reason I read forums like this. I've tried the Pro V1 on occasion and I just don't hit it as well as other balls (NXT's or DT So-Lo's for example). My drives are just not as consistent (left to right) when I use a Pro V1. I just always assumed that my swing speed and ball striking weren't good enough to really get the benefit from the Pro V1????
  19. I am an "intermitent" golfer with a high handicap as well. I'll play a bunch of times around this time of year but often I'll go months without getting out to play. What I finally discovered is that I just didn't hit my 3 wood well enough to carry it. I carry a driver, a 3h (19*), a 4h (22*), a 5h (25*) and a 5 iron. I'm not a big hitter so the 3h is about a 200 yard club for me. When I hit a 3 wood well, it would go about 220....when it when somewhat straight. For me more often than not, the 3 wood just got me in trouble. So I stopped carrying it (at least until I find the time to practice). If I'm 200+ out, I'm laying up. That was hard for me to accept at first but at my level of play, it's the smart thing to do and my scores have dropped as a result. YMMV
  20. I have hit both and I'm generally a Taylor Made guy (my driver is an R7 460). Two of my friends have the 454. I would choose the 454 over the R5 based on the few times I've hit them both and the improvement I have seen for both of my friends who switched to the 454. Note, I'm not saying the R5 isn't a good club I just liked the 454 better and I like my R7 460 more than either of them. Now, having said that I don't have a swing speed any where near yours nor do my friends so I'm not sure how comparable our results will be to yours.
  21. I took my 3W and my 5W out of my bag, put them next to my 3i and 4i in my garage. I have 2 TM Rescue Dual Hybrids that I just hit more consistently. I'd rather layup with a hybrid than go for it with a 3 wood because FOR ME it's the right thing to do.....I'll hit the hybrid well much more often than the 3W. I also have always hit my 5W pretty well but what I've discovered is that I just hit the hybrid better. So right now I have a driver (TM R7 460), a 7 wood (old Cobra that I've hit for years) and 2 hybrids in my bag.
  22. I have 2 Taylor Made Rescue Dual Hybrids, 25 and 19 deg. The only reason I don't have the 22 deg also is that it overlaps with my 7 wood, which has been a favorite club of mine for many years. I'll eventually get the 22 deg and retire my 7 wood. Last time I played I did so without my 3 iron, 4 iron, 5 wood and 3 wood and I was happy. I know the 19 deg isn't as long as my 3 wood but I don't hit a 3 wood well enough to warrant having in the bag anyway, I'd rather lay up with the hybrid. I'm what you guys call a "high handicapper" and these hybrids are just amazing. If I have a somewhat short drive and have to take out the 25 deg hybrid on a par 4, I'm not unhappy. The club is just so easy to hit. If you are shopping for a hybrid, you'd be wise to try the TM Rescue Dual and see if it works for you.
  23. If I could go thru a round without losing a ball, I'd play 1 ball. Now, in reality, I can't remember the last time I managed to play an entire round without losing at least a couple. That's one thing about being bad at this game, you don't have to wonder about when to switch to a new ball...you switch right after splash down or right after you give up and exit the woods!
  24. I guess for some of us, a "junk" ball works better...maybe my swing is junk so it's a good match . I have better results with DT Solo's and NXT's than I do with Pro V1's. Not sure yet why that's the case but I've tested the theory enough to know it's true. It's actually a really good thing since the Pro V1's are more expensive.
  25. Interesting that you say "it's never really taken off in the usa" and others proclaim soccer as "dead", etc. All of these responses seem to be from the angle of the spectator. As a spectator sport, it has not taken off, we'd rather watch football or Hoops. But from a players perspective, soccer has very much taken off in the USA is thriving and growing. In other words, we like to play soccer, we don't like to watch soccer. You can find Kids leagues for soccer more easily than any other sport around here (Raleigh, NC). I know scores of adults that play. CASL (an independent organization that runs many of the local leagues) used to be run by my friends Mom out of her kitchen. Now it's a large organization that manages many many leagues and facilities. I don't play anymore but to say that soccer is dead is a spectator's view. And I agree with others that as a spectator sport it does not unite fans the way it does in Europe (we have other sports for that - Baseball, Football, College Basketball). For soccer players, however, the sport is thriving in the US. Just my $.02 Elvis
