  1. Well done mhodar13! You know where you can easily find strokes so try to work on those areas. Also don't be too hard on yourself when you bob back up over 50 as is bound to happen from time to time. I find my scores are trending downwards but you get a bit of variation on any particular day. I find sometimes I need to step back and remember that the 54 I'm angry with today was a really good score for me just a couple of months ago.
  2. I'm a rank hacker but I have been battling a slice, mostly caused by an over the top swing, for some time and have tried the above drill and also a drill where you stand at the bottom of a slope and try to swing up the hill for the past week or so. On the weekend I hit one slight fade and 1 duck hook, apart from that I was hitting the ball with very little side spin. I did hit to the left of target quite often though. I'm going to persist with it though as it was a vast improvement. I took about 7-8 shots off my average since I got my new clubs.
  3. Played my best round since I got new clubs with a 49 over 9 holes. I'm trying to play bogey golf and I managed to only have one blow-out hole with an 8 on a par 5. That hole could have been much worse but I pitch and rolled from about 60 yards out to 6". I was really happy with my ball striking but my aim was a bit off on a few holes which cost me as I found trouble which let in a few double bogeys. I also got my putting average for the round below 2 per hole which is a first. Really looking forward to getting out again.
  4. I'm generally going around in 100-110 so I'm a bit higher than the 20 handicap. For me it's the long game. If I keep the ball on the short stuff or the first cut with my tee shot and play a reasonable second shot I generally give myself a good chance at par with a 1 putt or bogey on a 2 putt. If the tee shot is wayward or I make a meal of my second shot it just seems to pressurise each subsequent shot and then my short game and putting collapse. A common card for me for 9 would be 1 par, 3 singles, 2 doubles, 2 triples and a quadruple bogey. In that there is probably 2 fairways and a GIR or an up and down. I can't believe that too many 10 handicaps are getting themselves into trouble off the tee 2/3rds of the time like I do and scrambling to score that low consistently.
  5. Saw both of the longest I had seen on the one hole on the same day at a corporate golf day. Player in my group drives it off the back of 310 yard hole. The ball is stopped by a small hedge growing on the boundary fence. We finish up and carry onto the next hole. A guy from the group behind us nails his tee shot and puts onto the second storey balcony of a house across the road from the back of the hole. Must have been about 350 yards and still 3 metres off the ground when it hit. The ball bounced around in the balcony, rolled onto the drive and bounced back across the road to finish up on the verge. No one came out of the house so it's either a common occurence or no-one was home , lol!
  6. I had this happen to a demo club I was given. An odd thing to see the head of a 5i helicoptor out passed the 100m sign. I just informed the range staff and they had it for me to collect the following day. I have hard good things about the Adam's BUL 3 woods for beginners and they are pretty cheap too I think ~$40 + Shipping from RBG.
  7. I have been terrible off the tee the past month and quite good with my irons and serviceable with the putter. I've been telling myself that the scores are sure to tumble if I can keep it in play off the tee. Yesterday I hit it well off the tee - 6 of 9 fairways. My irons turned to rubbish and my putting was abominable - 6x3 putts on 9 holes! Ended up with my worst score in over a year. The putter just about ended up bent over the knee Very frustrating to achieve one goal and have the rest of my game fall apart.
  8. I think the most important measurement is wrist to floor for determining the right length. I'm 6'7", 39" WTF and I think he built me clubs to 1.5" over standard and maybe a couple of degrees upright on the lie - after a dynamic fitting. Good luck with the new set!
  9. I'm pretty tall and my club fitter told me that my clubs being too short would lead to a push because the club is toe down at address. He explained my pulls as being caused when I got the club face perpendicular at impact to my over the top swing plane. I have had properly fitted irons for the past few weeks and while I can still pull, hook and slice with great regularity (doh! ) I haven't seen any pushes so he could be onto something.
  10. Had a 55 over 9 holes yesterday. I'm still getting my head around the new set of clubs but I played more consistently than usual. Normally I snag a couple of pars and off-set those with some blow-ups for quad bogey or worse. This round was no pars but no holes worse than a triple. My main problem at the moment seems to be getting off the tee with any reliability. I had about 7 extra strokes thanks to duffed tee shots this round. My mates were happy as the beers were on me with all the ladies tees I failed to make it passed :(
  11. Empty pockets and wedding ring off. I just don't feel good over the ball with stuff in my pockets and the ring is just annoying to feel against the grip.
  12. The most frustrating thing for me is to take almost an entire round to realise an error and correct it. Yesterday I tried playing only with my irons and was really struggling as I was facing a lot of 40-60m approach shots and not faring well with my half swing. On the 15th I finally realised that I needed to lay up to 100-120m and get a full swing club in. Finished with 2 pars and 2 bogeys that I had a par putt for - if only I had worked that out before I started the round!
  13. Number 3 on the Quarry 9 at Joondalup Resort. Going short, long or right on this hole results in a big score. This hole always has me nervous at the tee If you hit the green though you feel great!
  14. Goals for me are: To play 18 holes a week. Consistently break 100. Improve my putting to greatly reduce the number of three putts.
  15. I usually only play 9 holes. My best to worst is 47-61 back to back. Played really good for me one week and then lost my cool the following week when I started badly. Golf really is mostly in the head I think!
  16. Sweet! That is a great outcome. Well done Callaway.
  17. Thanks for the input guys. I met with the clubmaker this morning and discussed it with him. He thinks that it is most likely the interaction with my old swing and the better fitting clubs getting back to square more easily for me. The lie angle on the old set causes me to play my hands quite close to my body which cramps me up a bit so I might have a bit of overcompensation built in to get back close to square at impact. He seemed pretty confident that the flex was fine for my swing speeds and tempo. Hopefully I'll sort it out on the range with some more practice. I think I hit the ball more consistently with the new clubs but it was disconcerting to see mishits travel in completely the opposite direction to normal! I guess the best thing to do is to try not to mishit it
  18. Well if this is the case he may have a better case with Callaway for replacement? *EDIT* Beaten to the punch!
  19. Oops sorry! Yes these are steel shafted irons and hybrids. I'm not looking at woods just yet. I am going to have some lessons once I have the clubs but I guess I'm just worried about getting the flex wrong and having to reshaft them after a short period.
  20. Hi there. New kid on the block here I'm in the process of getting some new clubs fitted and got a few demo clubs from the clubmaker to try out. The new clubs are fairly different to my old ones as I have grown about 6-7" since I got the original set. I think the new ones are 1.5" longer and a slightly different lie angle. Down at the range having a try of the new clubs I found my ball flight was radically different. Typically I hit my bad shots as slices or pull them straight left. Good shots are generally pretty straight but often a little right of target. With the demo clubs I couldn't hit it right at all. I was hitting a draw, which I've never done in my life, or straight and varying degrees of hook, some of them really nasty but generally probably a little more forgiving on off centre hits. Now I'm just confused as to why things would change so dramatically. I'm guessing that the clubs fitting me better is just making it easier to swing on plane and square the club face at impact and I just have a bit of over-compensation build into my existing swing but reading around the forum I see that too light a shaft flex can lead to hooking the ball. Obviously I don't want to build a whole set of clubs that turn me from a slicer to a hook machine. Is there anyway to work out what has caused this big change?
  21. Awesome.! You didn't break 100 you crushed it with a 93!! I managed a 102 last weekend and am hoping I might crack the 100 mark this weekend myself. Did you have a plan that you followed to break through or did you just have a day where things came together? I'm planning to leave the driver in the bag and tee off with something shorter but more reliable, probably 4h or 5i. I cost myself off the tee badly.
  22. Tough break. If Callaway doesn't replace it and I think they are within their rights not to, I would probably hit some more balls and see if you think there is an issue. If it seems fine I'd just use it. If it seems to be a problem you should be able to get a replacement head and a club maker to fix it for you no problem.
  23. On the game side I really like hitting a good approach shot into the green. At my level I'm stoked if I can hit it within 20-30 feet of the pin from 100-120m out. Hitting the green from the tee on par 3's is great too! On the social side I really like how you can get paired up with total strangers and they'll be rooting for you on those long putts, birdie chances etc and vice versa.
