65/20/15 Practice Ratios: Where to Devote Your Practice Time
Dave H replied to iacas's topic in Swing Thoughts
As a 20, I completely agree with you. It's the long game that causes my high scores. I might have 1, maybe 2 bad holes due to poor short game. But I probably have 5-6 bad holes per round due to bad long game. You can't score par if you're not getting on the green until your 4th or 5th shot. -
46 for nine. It was sunny out, but not super warm and it was super windy. Was making great contact, but was a little squirrelly off the tee.
-
Shot 42 on an easy 9. Was looking even better until an 8 on the last hole. I was feeling very good about my game until that last hole when I made a bad swing on the tee and then three silly mental errors in a row.
-
But it's not as if they're not still going to be assessed the penalty. Add a stroke for missing it in the round to keep people from making it a habit.
-
Wouldn't it be better just to get the scores right? Why would this be a bad thing? There are already documented cases of a player unintentionally breaking a rule and being notified of it before signing their card.
-
I think 33.7 is a sensible rule that can help ensure scores are correct and get rid of DQs when rules are innocently broken. Who thinks golf is in a better position by DQ'ing players for innocent mistakes in favor of using modern technology to get scores right?
-
I don't think anyone is still arguing that he didn't initially break a rule. That much seems clear. It's the aftermath of using the new rule to waive the automatic DQ by signing an incorrect card.
-
I agree. The situation in some ways reminds me of Dustin at the PGA, was it 09? He also didn't think he broke a rule, but the committee made sure he knew he did before signing so he had the opportunity to change his score. Is it considered standard practice for the committee to do this for players?

I get that, I'm just not making myself clear . Lets assume Tiger doesn't realize he's making an improper drop. I'm assuming that must be the case, why would he intentionally make an improper drop? Now, since we all have the ability to go back, review it a million times and determine that yes, the drop was improper, now let's assess the penalty, adjust his score accordingly and move on. It's not like he's getting a freebie or anything. He's still getting the penalty stroke applied to his score. Maybe what I'm really trying to say is that I don't like the DQ rule for improper score when we can all see before the end of the day that an error was made. I'm sure if TW realized it was an improper drop at the time he would have assessed the penalty on himself. Now, if shown the evidence and he still said, thanks but no I'm sticking with the score, yes a DQ. And in all fairness, I am a TW fan but would argue this same point for any golfer in the same situation.
-
I guess this is my point. Why are we so quick to DQ a player when this happens? TW or any other player in any other tournament. Why not just review the questionable call, recognize what the right application should be - in this case a 1 stroke penalty, apply the penalty and move on with the tournament. With all the cameras and technology available we have the ability to do that pretty fairly these days. Why not?
-
But it is *possible* that he thought he was dropping on the line the ball crossed the hazard. Whatever the case, we have the ability to get the scores right, why not just use the technology to get the score right?
-
I actually think this is a good way to deal with this type of thing going forward. It seems (I'll admit none of us can truly know intent) that there was no intentional cheating going on. Now that we have HD, infinite replays, etc we can easily see what the right call should be in hindsight. The players don't have that luxury during the middle of the round. If they get it wrong and there's clear video evidence of that, why not just adjust the score to be what it should be? In this case, the field is catching a break as what would have been a 1 stroke penalty is now a 2 stroke penalty.

I don't really pay too much attention to others when I'm at the range, but it can be tough to not notice the people right next to me. Sometimes I almost want to say something to somebody when they're clearly struggling but doing nothing to change it. Case in point: the guy next to me last weekend looked like a golfer - he had the clothes, nice clubs, etc but was clearly struggling to hit the ball. Instead of slowing down, or anything he just kept hiring balls faster and faster, with a wilder and wilder swing and of course the results got even worse. By the time he got to his driver, he was barely making contact, but he must have swung at about 50 balls in two minutes. After a few choice words he left in obvious disgust. I felt for the guy.

How far do you hit your clubs?
Dave H replied to SpringBokVol's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I switched from regular shafts to stiff this year and while I haven't really played any rounds yet I have noticed what looks to be a 5 yard loss on average. The clubs I got also have slightly stronger lofts so I suspect the distance loss would be more like 10 + if the lofts were the same. -
Sounds great! Hope to join in next time.

The 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard
Dave H replied to Rick Martin's topic in Tour Talk
I'm not replying directly to Iacas, but really to the sub-topic. I have two young children, both are in a public school system. We don't use "foul language" in our house and are working hard to teach our children to not use bad language (or manners, or attitude, etc). Anyone who thinks they aren't exposed to all manner of bad things in school is naive. I personally think its much important and effective to teach our children what is inappropriate as Iwalk18 said. -

If Tiger is not playing well enough to win, then who could possibly win? This just in: TW has won 3 times so far this year and it's still March. -
I'm in FL for spring break and got to play my first round of 2013 today. Shot 100 and felt pretty good about it for the most part. I must have given away 10 shots with poor play from 10 - 60 yards, which hurt but I was pretty happy with everything else. Felt good to be out again!

Anyone had it with 460cc drivers?
Dave H replied to Ed Rooney's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I love my R11S. No way I'd trade for a smaller driver. -
As others have already said, there's no right or wrong answer we can give not knowing your personal financial situation. If you're taking care of your family and the needs are being met and you can afford it without going in debt, I'd say you're fine.
-
Would love to but we're out of town for spring break. Hopefully next time.

Why are there so many push cart haters?
Dave H replied to AbsoluteZero's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I carry and have a push cart. I don't mind carrying in the spring and fall when temps are cooler and the humidity is down. I bring the push cart out for hot summer months though. I like my shoulders and back to stay as relaxed as possible and when it's really hot and I carry I tend to get tired and tense. In reference to the OP, I have a good number of buddies who give me crap for having a cart. I've never understood it. -
The equipment debate is silly. Jack used the best gear available at the time, so did his competitors. Tiger uses the best gear available now, so do his competitors. What advantage is Tiger gaining?
