Return of the Colored Golf Balls
calvie7 replied to iacas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Quite frankly, i think that seeing a ball in flight could have some real potential positives. I think that it could be a great teaching tool for those who when learning pick their head up, if it's easier to pick up the ball, they may be more willing to keep their head down through the swing knowing that they can pick it up even after it's left the club face... I know it's a stretch, but the idea of Hybrids was also not easily accepted and that changed the game for many armatures. -
I switched from the Pro V1's to Srixon and the launch angle changed immediately, couldn't believe the difference... the trispeeds are on a great sale at GG currently, they don't spin like a Pro V1 though. I will easily change a 15 yard check for a 10 yard check with the Srixon, With the extra cash my wife doesn't complain either!

Sun Mountain Powered cart
calvie7 replied to calvie7's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
The cost is a huge factor, and the reason i'll have to save a couple years to get it, but something about a "caddy" doing the work is great! -
I read the preliminary review regarding the new upcoming powered speed cart. I would love one, and while i have not seen my 30th birthday it may come as no surprise that I am catching more than a little crap for it at home. Am I the only one interested in this? I really enjoy walking but back problems prevent me from carrying, pushing is fine, but there is something appealing about having a "caddy like" helper do the grunt work on my 18 hole walk? So how about it, am I alone in this boat?

I like the idea of calling a private club in these economic times... They'd almost be crazy to say no to $120... unless they are Cypress point, or Augusta National. This was a seriously good suggestion! Besides what's the worst they could do, say no you need a sponsor... if they say this, ask for a list of names who would be willing, you are trying to give them money a good sum of money to play a game on their grass. Maybe it's just me and a topic for another thread, but sometimes I feel that private clubs could make a killing from opening a few slots for non members... If I were in charge of a struggling club, I sure would!

Attacking the ball, hitting down on it especially while chipping... easy to decelerate.

I am going to be visiting Portland, OR in April. Any good suggestions? Price between $35-$50?

Sun Mountain "Four 5"
calvie7 replied to Danny Noonan's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Love the Four 5, same issue with tee accessibility, but a simple pouch does the trick! -
I hit a driver straighter than a 3 wood, i'd prefer a square 3 wood. I know it's wierd by the way... I am working on it. The article about swing path has really helped, but now if it'd just get warm enough to work on it at the range i'd be happy.

Ten clubs in the bag...what should I add?

3 wood, hybrid, 52*, and 56* Personal preference is to find wedges that have a good solid topline (Vokey) -
Affordable 3-piece ball: Suggestion?
calvie7 replied to ohiolefty's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Quite honestly I played the Titleist ball for so long that i got used to seeing the Titleist name, and not being open to switching. This Winter in Colorado, i decided i was going to "test" some others out. I got a sleeve of E6's Nike's power soft, Srixon's, and of course Titleist. I chipped and putted with them for the last 3 months, and while driving and iron play hasn't been possible. Bridgestone and Srixon were easily the most consistant feeling from different wedges. They also seem to have appropriate roll out for a "basement carpet" chip and putting session. Quite honestly the NXT's were really clicky, and the feel changed depending on where i hit the ball on the club face. As I got more used to the idea that i could switch from Titleist is quickly realized that they were easily my least favorite ball. The Nike's (made by Bridgestone by the way) seemed nice, but had a blueish hue to them that I didn't like the look of. By far and away the Bridgeston, and Srixon were the ones i kept going to, and hitting again and again. I picked the srixon, but could easily have gone with the Bridgestone. Either way I don't think i'll ever play a Titleist ball again... and I am a Titleist person regarding clubs. Once I opened up my mind, I realized what i had been missing. Just my experience! -
looking for a new 3 wood to replace titleist pt

I absolutely love my 909, neutral face at set up, stiff shaft. Allows a nice fade or subtle draw! Read the Sand Trap review, it is well done! Wait for a demo day then you can actually compare ball flights and feel off of a real range... For some reason simulators just don't do the job! Good luck. -
When you are trying out putters, focus on distance control. I find that for me a heavy putter helps with this... that's just me though. I bought a Odyssey tri-hot off of ebay after testing it using a friend's on a practice green... I paid $30 for it, and polished it up after i received it. I'll probably use it for the next 20 years. Just goes to show that you don't have to pay a lot for something that works for you.

I just switched after 10 years with callaway steelhead plus to the Titleist 909. The head is very neutral. I did notice after years of playing it that I started to hit a very pronounced draw... obviously this because I became a better golfer with a very consistent inside out swing. The draw was too much, the new 909 is awesome, I can draw it without trouble, and hit a nice subtle fade, of course strait is my preferred shot, and it does this nicely!

I have a Sky Caddie SG3, love it, but I'd like to take it to the range and "map my own course" so I can know the distances to the markers... does anybody know if this is possible? By the way I love this unit, they should make them operate a little faster, maybe newer ones do but still. The drawback to all of the sky caddies that i have seen is the limitation on the number of courses... When I go on a vacation I have to take my computer just to add the course to the device... Seriously how expensive is memory these days? I am sure that they will fix this soon, but it is a huge oversight in my mind...

What was the name of it? Also did you ever do any of the one time summer pay and play as much as you'd like? It seems like this would be a great way to play more than one course... That is the area we are looking at currently.

Has anybody in the seattle area become a memeber of any of the private clubs? What are some of the best private clubs in the area for the money? Also if you haven't become a member of a private club, is there a public club that you can purchase yearly play-passes at that are worth it? I am moving to the area, and could sure use some advice on the topic.

What is the golf weather like between November and early April there? Are there a lot of days where you can get rounds in, and practice? We are considering moving up there, and I obviously need to factor golf into the equation! I realize it rain's there, no need to remind me of that, however if you are an avid golfer, are you able to play in the winter months? (unlike here in Colorado)

My latest is to stare really hard and focus on a spot, then visualize what the swing, and ball flight will look like, and allow my hands to understand their role. The trick is to remember the spot and relax in the back and down swing. DON'T EVER TRY TO KILL IT, it will do you no good!

"Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" by Ben Hogan
calvie7 replied to iacas's topic in Reading Room
Best guide i have ever read, IMHO. -
I have played in the Seattle area two times, being from the plains of Colorado, and the wet green of Seattle seems a nice change! Also the muni I played at (Jackson Park in the shoreline area) was well taken care of, not immaculate but enjoyable to play. If you are in town on business there are some great inexpensive courses around the area.
