How much "fashion" can you tolerate on women golfwear?
kurisu replied to kurisu's topic in The Grill Room
I appreciate well dressed people. Male or female. I think it's a form of politeness/courtesy towards your other fellow players. Ok, perhaps I'm spoiled here, or it just shows I've never played golf outside of Asia… Let me add that all those girls with eye-catching (for better or worse) golfwear are never worth a damn at actual playing. Sure, we all have to start somewhere! I'm the first one to admit that and my first round ever was probably not pretty to watch. But I wanted to get better and I wanted not to suck! Well, here in Japan I've never met a "fashion girl" that actually honestly tries to get the ball forward and tries to keep up. So perhaps I would feel totally ok with that "fashion" if those girls were actually able to play even to 130. Because if I feel the person is struggling but wants to learn the game, I don't care what your clothes are, and I'm going to try to help them. I guess Shindig hits an interesting point: you should have some amount of game to back up how you're dressed. Although I wouldn't go as far as wanting them to play under 100… but last time I played in a clients' company competition, our foursome had one young lady (that had supposedly been playing for about a year) dressed all pink, from driver (with some bling bling inserts on the crown…) to visor, and we stopped counting her score after she reached a 162 on the 12th hole. Was it due to her clothing? no, for sure! but it certainly didn't help making it more bearable to watch… and she didn't act like she was there for GOLF… she was there to show off. I'm going to the USA this summer, and after coming back, maybe I'll change my mind, who knows :) -
Alright folks. What started as a joke brought up a serious question: What would you consider "too much" as far as women golfwear goes? Here in Japan, for most young women, golf is more something of a "trend" than a sport. And Every round I play, I can see a few young women dressed in what I wouldn't consider suitable for playing golf. Now, I'm not saying I don't like the eye candy (it certainly brightens my days when I can't seem to stop duffing), but sometimes it's just too bright/pink/flashy/bling. I've posted below some mild examples taken out of a local golf magazine. I'll try to add some more later. What do you think?

When I purchased my Scratch wedges they came with Pure Grips ("pure pro") and I immediately loved the soft but firm feel, and the texture. I just reshafted my irons and was looking for a Pure Grips reseller here in Japan but it's not distributed here unfortunately. So I initially considered going with the GP New Decade MultiCompound, but tried their new VDR grips, and they feel somewhat close to the feel of the Pure Grips, so I got them on the new shafts. They feel tacky but not too much, soft feel but not spongy. I do not know about their longevity yet obviously. I'd recommend you give the Pure Grips a try, they are really awesome. I believe iacas reviewed them on this site a couple of years ago, if you need a more qualified and thorough review. cheers

undetectable. if in doubt, the new forums have a spellchecker included in the editor. -
Club Adjustment: Lengthening vs Angling upright
kurisu replied to jrobins86's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If the shafts are too short for you then you might also be too close to the ball, or too bent (your back). Both shaft length and lie angle should be fit to your characteristics (arm length, wrist-to-floor distance, total height, leg length, etc.) so it really cannot be perfect by just lengthening the shaft or just changing the lie angle alone. -
What is the brand of your Driver shaft ?
kurisu replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
UST Mamiya ATTAS-T2 (6S) Until recently I was using a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki α 60. -
Anyone will recommend that you get on a launch monitor and get fitted for the shaft that's best for your swing. If you don't want to/don't care (you should), try a heavier shaft in R flex. This will feel slightly stiffer. Otherwise, some manufacturers offer a "SR" flex (which stands for "stiff regular") which is in between R and S. The right thing to do, though, is to have a pro and a machine determine what is best for you.

Best iPhone Golf GPS App?
kurisu replied to Tenacious Deek's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I have been in touch for a while with the devs because I helped them track down very annoying bugs in their contact management code (it was using semi-custom address book hooks and thus it was not working at all with non-alphabetical entries (in my case, Japanese). Took them 6 months and took me countless explanations, screenshots taking, before they even considered it a bug, even though I could crash the app at will with specific steps. I asked them all the while about this shot distance tracker and a few other stats that would be awesome (they record the tee club, but you can't show the stats for tee accuracy per club, for instance) and they always said "we might consider it". Their issue is that they only have 2 devs working on Golfshot: GPS, Golfplan and GolfScape, and so they are spread pretty thin. The only thing I really can't stand about Golfshot is that you can't export your data and do your own analysis, short of typing it back from looking at the full scorecard online. But otherwise, yes, as abraxas said, for the pricepoint it's hard to beat the features of that app. -
You can get the lie adjusted and the grip size changed, but that's gonna cost you extra. But if you need extra shaft length, you're out of luck. Are you at least sure that the shaft you chose is the correct one for your swing and head speed?
-
You could also get a Titleist 910 D3 in 10.5º and use the SureFit hosel to add 1.5º of loft (position A-4). Bam, you get a 12º, 420cc driver.

Best iPhone Golf GPS App?
kurisu replied to Tenacious Deek's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
You mean the "last shot" tracker? I found it to be accurate to about +/- 3 yards compared to a dedicated GPS. The only thing is that it's slow to update so even when you are over your ball, you have to wait a couple of second and see whether it will stay at the value, or suddenly update and increase/decrease 10 yards… But that function is kind of useless if you ask me, since this is not recorded in the stats; so that means you can't track and establish how far each club goes. Would be neat. -
The never ending chase after the perfect impact. Someone posted this same thought in another thread I can't find right now, but the amazing thing is that the concept, the feel of the perfect impact that you have now, will be different in the future. As a player gets better, his/her frame of reference is always evolving towards better. This is true for the putter, for an iron, for a wood. There is always something you wish you could do better, and so you try to reach that next level, no matter if you're a beginner or if you play on the biggest tours.

Nike VR Tour Driver 420 for High Handicapper?
kurisu replied to deanofdestiny's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Smaller heads are easier to work left or right, but anyone can hit them if matched with the proper shaft fitted for your swing. -
Scotty Cameron moving to Nike.... ???
kurisu replied to enis750's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Which Asian company? We listed them in the other thread about the Fortune brands being for sale, and the conclusion was that none had either the financial power or a good commercial reason to buy Titleist. None of the established brands, i.e. Mizuno, Bridgestone (with TourStage), Yamaha (InpresX), Yonex, PRGR, (and dare I add) Honma, have the marketing power to absorb a brand such as Titleist. If one of them did, then to save cost they would dilute the particularities of both their brand and Titleist's. And then, you get none of the positives from such acquisition. What is the point of having two completely different lines of clubs with completely different manufacturing facilities, completely different strategies ? That's a recipe for losing money. Only pure financial buyers will be interested in taking over the Acushnet empire. -
Scotty Cameron moving to Nike.... ???
kurisu replied to enis750's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Does anyone think that the whole "Tiger switches to Nike Method putter on the eve of the British Open then gets back to old Scotty" fiasco have triggered any of this? Especially since Acushnet brands would be apparently for sale? Sounds like awful good timing… but we don't know exactly when the talks about selling Titleist/FootJoy/Scotty really started. -
Got these in my irons, and I like them a lot. As Jkwakopo said, these are high launch shafts for skinny guys like me (haha). I've seen my 1.5hcp friend play them and they balloon pretty badly (but he is a very hard and long hitter) on high speed swings, but I'd say in S they are fine for up to 95~100mph (driver club head speed). If you swing faster than that, then try them in X but I'd recommend you look into the slightly heavier 1050GH in X for a slightly lower launch, if you still want lightweight shafts.

Wedges: Scratch and Fourteen
kurisu replied to relentlesswhitey's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
as wrx_junki said, Fourteen is big in Asia. Being resident here in Tokyo, I've come across quite a few players with Fourteen irons and wedges. (haven't seen anybody yet playing their woods, though) What is written in small letters on the Fourteen website is that the forging is done in China, but the clubs are _assembled_ in Japan. Not that it matters much (their quality seems top notch), but something that should be known prior making the purchase, if part of your decision is based on buying something "made in Japan". I have hit their newest wedge model (MT-28 V5) and it feels very soft, but the very thick topline is not my cup of tea, and shaft selection is very limited, for the price they are sold at. I prefer the looks, sound and feel of the Scratch wedge, and because of the strong yen, I bought two 1018 models (53º and 58º in DD) for a very good price. But for someone living in the US, that means buying Japan made clubs at the moment is a very pricey proposition... -
Oh, that's right! sorry about that and thanks for the correction Either way, that says a lot about the impression that driver left me ! (The 907D1, that is. The big triangular one)
-
Then, to answer your question. Here are what you can find on the popular brands' websites, as "standard": Entry level clubs: 50~60 grams, R & S flex Middle level : 60~70 grams, R, S, X flex High end or "TP": >70g (up to steel shafts, yes, on driver), S, X, XX, etc.
-
I had one (907D2) as my first driver (bought it second hand). While the results were ok (bit too much spin though), the shape and the sound were annoying me to no end. It was Titleist first attempt at a 460cc driver (afaik) and the triangular shaped head looks just huge at address. It sounded kinda tinny to my ears and I resold it a few weeks later. From the 907 series, my vote goes for the D1. Otherwise, as the other guys said, the 905 series is awesome and the 909 was a big success.
-
What Blades4me and WUTiger said. Generally people prefer to have some gradation in weight. For instance if you have 120g shafts in your irons, your short woods/hybrids would have 80/90g shafts and your driver 70g. But nothing is set in stone, and the best way to find what is "standard" for YOU is to go get fitted and choose what feels best within the selection that gives you the best numbers for your swing.

I can't seem to find the option to display times in 24 hours format. Is it possible to do so in the first place? Sorry if I missed the option. Looked pretty much everywhere though.
-
You won't gain miraculously 10 yards with the Supertri. If your drives start high and you want to flatten the ball flight a little, why don't you get fitted for a new shaft instead? Definitely cheaper. p.s. yes, the supertri head spins a bit more than the previous generation.

Upgrade from TaylorMade R580XD to Burner Plus
kurisu replied to Tugglife2's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I realise this is old and the OP probably has made his choice a long time ago, but I found the Burner Plus driver on the Japanese Taylormade website: http://japan.taylormadegolf.com/vint...atID=11&page;=2 (second from the top). I think, like the R5 xl series, it's a special edition for some sporting outlets. closed face (from 1º at 9º Loft, to 2º closed on the HT(13º) model), 460cc, re*ax shaft with low weight (50g) and high torque.
