Lol, did you actually just say that. I think you would be better to work on your putting cause if you prefer a 20ft bunker shot over a 60ft putt you must be real crap at putting. Also, how do you know whether or not your ball will be plugged in the bunker before you take the shot. If it goes on the green you know exactly what your lie will be.

Probably closer to 4:30 min/mile for the 10k. He did the 5000m in 13:34 earlier this year.

He did what? Spent 20 hours a day practicing golf for the last 4 years? Yeah sure.... -

Interesting way to look at it. Just an FYI, I can see Lydia Ko's handicap history from the NZ golf website. If we say that she was practicing ~2000 hours a year then two years before she turned pro (Feb 2011) she was playing off +6.0. A year before that she was playing off +2.1. When she turned pro her handicap was +6.7. There is probably a little as all of her overseas rounds are not counted in that calc. Not sure how this relates to Dan. Comparing one of the best golfers ever (considering she was playing off +6 at 14 years old) is probably not the best thing for him to aim for. -
IMO, all of these things are a complete waste of time. I had a swingbyte 2 which I recently sold because I used it for about 20 mins once and then never again. Unless you have a coach that can tell you specifically what you want to try and achieve (in terms of numbers the gizmo reports) then there is no direction as to what is a good number to try and aim for. They give you ranges for the fields that are reported but if you are inside them already but still hit it crap then what do you do? Cool from a geek perspective but in the real world no help whatsoever. My 2c anyway.

Yeah that's one way to put it. Nick Willis won the silver medal at the 2008 olympics in the 1500m. So probably one of the fastest middle distance runners in the world. Still only shot 97 though.

I was thinking the same thing. He regularly posts comments and on more than one occasion they are longer than the blog post itself. -
Thought I'd update this thread again. Been doing evolvr again for about 4 months and really starting to get some results back. Still a little rough around the edges but heading in the right direction. Got some 36 hole tournaments (36 holes in 1 day) coming up so looking for some solid results in tournament play. I've played in a few before and my swing just falls apart on game day. So really looking forward to applying my improved swing and also the tricks given in "Lowest Score Wins". Currently focussing on steady head and swinging with my shoulders. Also the feeling of holding my lag and swinging down on the ball with irons. Struggling a bit with my short game at the moment. Probably have neglected it a bit in the last 3 months so will shift focus to that a little bit now. If anyone is considering evolvr it is a great option. Not only is it cheap compared to in person lessons, you get to choose when you do the lessons. It isn't a silver bullet and I have had my fair share of frustration but keep at it and you will see results. Anyone looking at trying it I'd say a minimum of 3 months is required before you start seeing results.

Man it cracks me up reading his blog. His latest one about ups and downs. He briefly skims over the round mentioning how every bad shot he hit (and it sounded like he hit a lot) bounced fortunately and he managed to shoot low 70's. The next day he goes out and the bounce of the ball goes against him and he shoots low 80's. Reading between the lines I think somehow he thinks the low 80's round is not fair. In reality the low 70's round was a complete fluke and the low 80's round is what he deserves. Somehow I think this will never dawn on him... Still, great reading when I want a laugh. -
Very sad day indeed. RIP. Having directly known 5 people that have committed suicide the way I rationalise it is by saying depression is no different to cancer. Some people get cured, some don't, sadly this is the result when they don't get the treatment they need. It is a disease/illness of the brain and very difficult to diagnose and treat. Until more people start to think of it this way I don't think things will change. (sorry, not wanting to start a suicide thread!)

Yay! Mine arrived as I was about to leave for work this morning. Good timing cause I have a business trip this afternoon so will have something to read on the plane! Am I the furthest away person to get the book (South Island of New Zealand)? You'd basically have to be in Antarctica to be any further away

I bought a box of these at christmas and only used the first one a few weeks ago. In winter (southern hemisphere) they are great cause the greens are a bit softer and they help make up for a little bit of distance loss in the cold weather. The best part imo though is the durability of them. The z-stars are pretty good for a players ball but the e6 are amazing. Three rounds with the same ball and it looks like z-star after 18 and a pro v after 9 holes. Will be sticking with these till the greens firm up in summer and I need a bit of check.

Yes and that is the reason why his handicap is low, you need to be under 4 (I think??) to be eligible to enter the state am events. So if he posted up all his "practice" rounds (probably anything over 80) his handicap would probably be closer to reality of 7 or 8. But, then he wouldn't be able to play in the tournaments! Easy to criticise but I'd probably do the same, hehe... -
I think Michael Campbell will win.

I really enjoy reading posts like this, we need more of it! Keep us updated with your season and any of the mini tour events you play in. You should start up a thread detailing your season so we can be along for the ride!

Potential Analytical Golf Swing Camera
k14 replied to Lee Tracey's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
For me, even for a long practice session I may only have 3-5 mins of recording (maximum). In a usual session I may only come away with 10-20s of recording. I may take 10-15 different clips (up to 30 seconds in length) but will usually delete these after watching and only keep 1 or 2 pairs of clips (by pair I mean a face on and down the line view of the swing) to download to my PC for post analysis. When I have a lesson my instructor usually only takes between 1 and 4 clips (all being less than 10 seconds) and then we will go and copy to his computer to analyse. So IMO you don't need to worry if you only have 10-20 mins of recording ability on a 32gb or 64gb SD card, that is ample. -
Yep, thats why I signed back up to Evolvr last month :)

Potential Analytical Golf Swing Camera
k14 replied to Lee Tracey's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Great idea. Once you get the specs sorted I am certain you will be able to get it funded via kickstarter. There is so much demand for a simple camera to do this that I think you would get enough support. I think a price of $1000 is a little high, around the $400-$500 mark would make it very popular. -
I'd go hybrid, purely because that is the club I know I can hit the straightest. Hitting 3w and Driver (for me) both bring into range the deep rough and it isn't worth it for reducing the shot into the green from ~90 yards to 60 yards or less. That way I can put a full swing on the club and get it to check on the right yardage. Purely from reading the lowest score wins thread etc I am guessing Erik will say hit driver cause the closer you are to the hole the lower score you are going to get. But for me hitting driver or 3w bring in double bogey to the equation. Even if I hit a poor tee shot with the hybrid I am still able to most likely have a shot to the green and at worst get bogey.

I think that he still has a lot going on in his head at the moment and once he gets his swing a little more reliable and can trust it he will be a pretty solid golfer. He has already posted a sub par round so that speaks of his potential. Anyone that can do that is certainly on the right track. I don't however see him being able to consistently post sub par rounds. I think he will still throw in the odd 80+ round but I think this summer we will see him post a couple of mid 70 rounds in tournaments which to me is what a genuine 2 or 3 player would be capable of doing. The one thing that just really frustrates me is his seeming stubborness at hitting driver on pretty much every par 4 and 5. If he put it away and gave up 20-30 yards on a lot of the holes he would score better and not be that much disadvantaged. -

No it is completely off topic. Other members have been spouting stats left right and centre that refute your claims but you still are harping on about eagles. I play off 10 and in 8 years of golf I have had 1 eagle and only been on a par 5 in two shots about 10 times ever and driven a par 4 once. I have a mate who plays off a 2 handicap who with I play regularly and he might have one eagle every 15-20 rounds. It all depends on what course you play on. My home course has a shortest par 5 at about 510 yards, but the green is tricky to hold with a 3w or hybrid. From what I can tell Dan is playing all his golf off the tips so the fact he hasn't had an eagle is irrelevant and not unexpected. The discussion of his anti-cap is certainly relevant. I would class myself as pretty erratic (93 to 78 in 2 weeks hehe) but even my anticap is 16.5 vs 10 which is certainly at the upper end but still plausible. The fact his is higher is quite startling. I do however see how it is possible. He has a pretty solid short game from what I can tell so the difference between a 75 and a 85 for him could be not much (one or two more GIR's and a few up/downs vs none). I have had rounds like that. Only hitting 6 or 7 GIR but get up and down from everywhere, you should have had a 82-83 but shot 75. In the long run it is unsustainable but can pull your handicap down in the short term, it also tends to fall apart in a pressure situation (tournament) when you are relying on one putts to make par. I was quite intrigued by his journey a few years ago when I first heard of it. But now I think he is majorly wasting his time. He might get down to a genuine 2 or 3 but I doubt much lower.
