This thread was started two days ago and I already have two posts here! Anyways, here's a worst shot of the week for me. 9th hole 318-yard par 4, that runs parallel to the 8th hole, but separated by a few trees. I'm at the tee and the group behind us is at the 8th tee. I pull out my driver and take a shot, but to my horror the ball starts slicing and goes directly for the group at the 8th tee. I quickly yelled "Fore!" and prayed that when I rounded the trees, I wouldn't find one of them lying on the ground in pain. To my relief, I hit none of them because my ball bounced off the cart path behind them and away from them. Regardless, I quickly took my ball and booked it from there. I don't think you can describe the sheer horror that you feel when you see your ball flying directly towards a group of people. Scary stuff!

4th hole, 123-yard par 3, downhill and tree-lined. I hit an 8I short of the green and ahead of a 5ft bunker, but on the up-sloped hill of the bunker. I had one foot in the bunker and one foot out and the ball was knee-high. I took my SW and hit the smallest of chips. The ball lands on the edge of the green and slowly rolls to within 1 foot of the hole. I made the putt for an unlikely par.

Shot a 44 at a local 9-hole course that included 5 pars, 0 hit fairways, and 3 one-putts. I was pretty inconsistent all day to say the least!

Great idea here! Mine was on the 2nd hole, par 4 340 yards with a 90 degree dogleg right. I hit a very good drive and approach shot to 5 feet from the green, on the fairway, with the flag about 15 feet from the edge of the green. I take my SW out and attempt a small chip, but I end up hitting the ball super thin, sending the ball flying past the hole and off the green. Ended up carding a triple on that one.

I'll check it out. Hopefully there's a lefty one that I can find. Thanks! -
50-52 Degree Wedge Recommendations?
Uncle Peter replied to Uncle Peter's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yeah the PW (44*) is part of my iron set and my SW (56*) is a pretty cheap one that I picked up for $20, but love it. It's too bad it's not a common brand that I don't think is sold anymore. I hit about 100 yards with the PW, but I'm not sure how far I can hit with the SW, since I rarely use it from 50+ yards. This is why I would like to get a 52 wedge that acts sort've like a high iron and wedge, kind of like a "transition" club of some sort, and one to hit between that range. Yes this is exactly what I want. Any bounce recommendations too? -
I like to call this the Phil Mickelson shot. 5th hole 510 yard par 5, with a severe uphill dogleg left, to a green that's perched on a hill (It was so uphill that they had a flagstick that was double the height of a normal one, just so you could see it!). I'm about 120 yards away from the green for my 3rd shot and I can barely see the tall flag. I hit an 8I over the green into a pine forest. I end up finding the ball and the situation was bad. I'm in "pine needle rough" (like what Mickelson had at the 2010 Masters) and my ball about a foot left of a tree truck AND I'm 15 yards away from the hole, which is at least 10 feet higher than me. I'm a lefty, so I cannot hit the shot normally. Instead, I take my PW, flip it, and play the shot right-handed (Like what Mickelson did at Quail Hollow in 2010). I hit the shot perfectly and the ball landed softy on the green, about 6 feet from the hole. I made the putt for my luckiest par ever.

I'm thinking about ditching my 64 degree wedge for something to fill the gap between my PW and SW. I'm looking for a 50-52 degree wedge that I can hit like a high iron and also wedge, when need be. What would you guys recommend?

Which club do you chip with?
Uncle Peter replied to FloppedBalls's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I normally hit a 56* wedge from anywhere around the greens -
I played with an elderly guy last year who "played his slice". He had a pretty bad slice, so whenever he went to hit any shot he would always line up very far left of where he intended. The best part was that this guy knew his slice so well that despite aiming far left and slicing, his ball would always land as if he hit it straight! Needless to say, he shot pretty well that day.

What's that one shot that no matter what, you know when you hit it, it's going to be good?

What is your strangest experience on a golf course?
Uncle Peter replied to Chad Collins's topic in Golf Talk
My strangest experience was probably my 3rd last round. A friend and I were on the 14th hole (long par 5) when we heard a loud BOOM from the sky. We looked up and saw a fighter jet fly by us at a really high speed. Moments later, we saw a white passenger plane, also flying faster than normal, shoot by us and then another fighter jet behind it. All of the planes were flying pretty low too and it looked like the fighter jets were circling the passenger plane or following it or something. Whatever it was, it was pretty weird to say the least. -
Ok, so who carries the FEWEST number of clubs in the bag?
Uncle Peter replied to dave s's topic in Golf Talk
This is what's in my friends bag: -Driver (Rarely used) -3H -6I -9I -PW -Putter On most holes he usually hits his 6I instead of driver, but still shoots pretty good scores despite the limited number of clubs -
Shot a 95 (49/46) at a course I usually play often at a lower score. Need to get out to the driving range more often, I think.

Black Callaway Org. 14 Xtreme Cart Bag. Love it!

Come to Canada, they have a lot of lefty-players and lefty clubs! :) All joking aside, most of the brands I've tested have full sets, right and left, available for testing. Some of the specialty clubs (gap wedge, lob wedge) they don't have, but that's pretty rare.
-
Sand Wedge for me (56*). I'm very good with it from 50 yards and in, and around the greens. The best part is that it's my cheapest club; I picked it up for 20 bucks at the local golf store, but I love it!

what is your go to shot from 100 yards in the fairway?
Uncle Peter replied to onthehunt526's topic in Golf Talk
A 3/4 to full PW depending on what I'm feeling, though a full PW was slightly long from what I remember when I last hit a 100-yard fairway shot. -
At most courses I've played at, the staff have been perfectly fine with us stopping after the 9th, if we do decide to stop. If the course is not busy, we'll usually sit down and order a fuller meal. If the course is full, we'll run in quickly and get a snack or water. It all depends on if the course is busy or not. (And the time of day, of course! :) ) When we do sit down, the marshals usually tell us to check in with them when we start the back nine. When we rush quickly to get a snack, they don't really care too much. I guess they probably account for people stopping or something like that, at least at the courses I've been at. Also, if I'm on a good playing streak (hitting the clubs good, ball straight, etc), I decide not to stop, to keep the momentum going.

Late Spring or Early Fall for me. The temps are a lot more comfortable and the courses are generally less busier!
-
Shot a 97 (48--49) on a tougher course that I played from farther back tees than I normally play.

I love any unorthodox shot that needs to be played, like low punch shots from under trees, high shots over or through trees, SW chips from the rough, etc; I find it makes the game more interesting when you need to get creative with your shots. My all-time favourite unorthodox shot that I took was a couple weeks ago. I was in the left rough of a par 4 right under a tree about 50 yards away from the hole, with a pond with a large fountain shooting upwards between me and the green. I used a 4H and hit it very lightly through the fountain and onto the green. Most of my drives are never in the fairway, so I've learned to get better and better at these shots, but my friends think I'm crazy when I try them! :)

Shot a 93 (47-46) at a local course, but on a new back nine, which I surprisingly did slightly better on.

15th hole, 330yard par 4 downhill with a river that runs across the hole near the green. I hit my tee shot to about 110 yards and then hit a 9I from there. The ball landed short left of the hole, but ricochetted off of a large river rock and bounced right and onto the green about 20 feet from the hole. I two-putted for par.
