i will be changing driver lofts this weekend from 11.5 maltby to a 15 degree callaway x...both clubs will be x flex swing speeds over 120 at present with 11.5loft carry results in 200 to 290 with roll in excess of 50 yards (less than 50 on the longer carry drives but more than 20 in the fairway). Trajectory is low even on the longer carrying balls, -5 angle of attack to help explain the unusual trajectory. Could I expect a carry increase of %10? maybe %20 on average? with a corresponding decrease in roll? or will it be under %10 in difference?

With enough practice can anybody become a pro?
steelernation replied to James_Black's topic in Golf Talk
yes talent is something that exists, see my first post it just improves the odds. I have 1st hand knowledge of a prodigy, a 7 year old that can hit a golf ball over 180 yards with driver. -

A great philosopher once said "the only impossibilites are square shaped triangles and triangular shaped squares." Im not a thoroughly religous man, but divine intervention (if you believe in such things) and chaos theory can play havoc with the themes similar to this post. The best way to address a post like this are using odds. The key issues in developing a pro imo are in order of importance: physical ability, passion(drive), resources(money/time/coaching). I think if any of the posters on this forum have(had) better than 1 in 100,000 odds to be pro at one time in their lives. A good formula for the odds makers is the US open tournament structure. first the odds of any person eventually getting to that scratch level and qualifying, from there it takes 1000 to 2000 exceptional strokes in a row(or one bad shot and two good ones) to win the US Open..........from there it would be all downhill! -
Has anyone ever played a course with aerated greens or just a course with horrid greens that scrwed up your putting in the next round on a decent course? I think it happened to me this week.... Before the bad greens I would 3 putt once in 30 holes(i chip well) yesteday I 4 putted! and 3 putted like 5 times.

My all time favorites are "nnnaaaa nnnnnaaa nnnnnnaaaaa" when a very long putt is made always brings a smile...... I think this place is restricted, Wang, so don't tell'em you're Jewish

Colder temperatures and the effects on ball distance
steelernation replied to rogerw's topic in Golf Talk
Im a long hitter and I played 4 rounds in the past 2 weeks in temps of 40f' to 60f' (dont know the celsius temps) I notice a decrease in my drive by as much as 20%! The are several factors; First playing in the morning in the northeast usa most of us experience a dew or melted frost(after delay) that basically turns fairways into a sponge. This is where I see a %20 loss on drives and sometimes this extends into the noon hour of the day if the sun fails to dry out the fairway. By afternoon once the temp gets to 60 degrees, the loss of distance lowers to %10 due to ball temp and fairways that are still relatively soft. The only times I have ever had "great" drives in cold temps was due to hitting patches of frozen fairway with a stinger drive(basically hitting concrete) With Irons I have noticed the same loss of distance, but the higher the iron the less noticeable, lob wedge maybe 8% and a 6iron maybe 10 % depending on firmness of fairways. Lately when I land in the rough off a drive the ball goes further since the rough still seems to play hard and not spongy,,,,I have had 5 mudballs a round in two weeks UGGGHHH -
Im sure hes already flipped a lid from one of my prior posts on another thread. I dont own a 5iron, LOL. The 6iron was a recent new purchase nike sumo with xstiff, works great so far. I dont know whats wrong with my Drive swing, Its just a mess. ok it goes maybe 50 yards in the air and dives with hard topspin. If it lands on a fairway it will roll out maybe another 75 yards. Even when I was more consistent, I would still worm burn a drive or snap hook 5 a round and maybe 7 decent drives and 2 good drives. Im 6'3 plus with a baseball background, hitting far 1 out of 10 isnt a big feat.
-
Funny I do, but I cant carry my 6 iron 220 yards. With the dry fairways it will roll that far, but if I play a course that requires a 220 yard carry over water or swamp, Im in deep doo. I played nine last night and shot a 46 on a 35 front nine, but I took a trple boge on a par 4 that requires 220 carry off the tee, should I lay up to the ladies tee? HAHA that would be funny.

WHen I was monitored over a year ago it was 119. I USED to hit 1 ball a round 310 to 320, now i dont even swing with driver. I tee the ball a foot left of center, so theres no doubt its on the upswing. Would it help to move the ball to dead center?

You likely flip at every club, no matter what it is. Most people do. I flip too soon after impact the exact same with every club, from driver to lob wedge, and even the putter sometimes. Bold are my annotations. That's 7 holes ruined by bad shots. Now all you experts find where he could have saved all those strokes with good course management.[/QUOTE] I know my swing on the shots from 150 out to 40 in, thats the area in which I tend to recover from the bad ballstriking you mentioned. I know those mishits are bad mechanics causing the bad striking. Once I get in the range above, I use a different swing and the bottom of swing is 5 inches in front of ball and 2 to 3 inches deep(divots) I see and feel every swing going down on the ball, I cant use that same plane on a 8 iron or even a 9iron I havent practiced enough. My recent fix was an attempt at course management, tee off with a 6iron. I get 180 to 210 as opposed to an unknown with a driver (I did this on 1, 2,6,7,8,9) Its still bad ballstriking but Im using course management to get in my comfort zone of 150 (1hole was just tight swing I hadnt swung in 2 weeks, 2 was dead on, 5 needs a 220 carry over hazard-course management cant help me, 6 worked perfectly, 7 was a mishit ballstriking, 8 ballstriking, 9 ballstriking) Its a band aid fix. The only way to make it fool proof is to tee off with a pitching wedge and hit the ball 160 yards up the hole, but that wont bring my score down that much. I think the fact that I shot 46 last night on the front nine is a huge testament to my short game. No 3 putts, I had 14 putts because I was either just off the green in 2 and chipping dead on with a 1 putt or just managing a steady 2 putt, but when your getting on in 1 over GIR or 3 over GIR your still screwed. You have to get on in 2 to have a fighting chance at a 9HC so it goes back to ballstriking, remember a 3 putt after a GIR is still bogey, but at least you cant end up in a hazard(or shouldnt) while on the green. -

I tend to hit down on 51 wedge and up, the rest are probably flips unless its a greedside lob wedge. -
its a problem that appears from time to time....well I made some swing changes about 3 months ago and it stopped completely. Its started again about 2 months ago, so I just play my irons off the tee. Im too busy to take lessons, but I like to understand what Im doing wrong so I can begin to fix the problem. The admin explained it pretty well. Its just hard to comprehend that my dynamic loft is at 20 but my lifting and SS causes the insane topspin, but I can figure out as to how it happens, I have a high SS and my guess is that OP has one also. I just need to stop arm swinging for starters. Golf is not my top priority, if it were, I wouldnt be having this problem.
-
I appreciate the fact that you can comprehend the physics. I swing this way, its all arms and has gotten worse over the last 2 months. Sorry but that type of video footage is illegal in my state. I Have hit them in the middle of the club face, but true usually a little to the left of center so it hooks a little left. Wow your analysis is dead on, Im amazed, truly. Few people have ever understood this. I dont even use my driver anymore because of this.
-
Wrong dude. Explain how a ball leaves the face of a driver at impact goes out 30 to 50 yards at about 10 to 20 feet in height and then dives straight down as if it were sucked into the ground. A ball only acts in this fashion when it has top spin, sick topspin.. ALSO bear this in mind. The ball is hit square on the face of the club, not the leading edge or bottom of the face. Its hard to imagine since its unlike anything that this board ever sees, the ball literally gets slapped and the club is lifted vertically at impact at extremely high speeds. No its not a top. It is a very bad swing. maybe not in baseball but it is in golf

my last round went like this par 4 snap hook 100 yards left (bogey) par 4 decent 190 yard iron shot (birdie putt from 2 ft) par 3 hit hazard from 165 (2 strokes DB) par 4 hit hazard w driver drop was 250 from hole (3 strokes TB) par 4 decent drive to 150 on a 440yd hole from adjacent fairway duffed approach, then finished with 6(db) par 4 good iron off tee to 140 stuck green from 25 feet 2 putt (par) par 5 iron off tee due to tight hole, lay up to hazard 230 out, go for the green and hit fat into hazard, 175 out from hazard, hit green and end up 15 ft , two putt (TB 1 stroke to tee shot 2 strokes to long irons or woods) par 3 235 yds uphill pull hook into trees, retee and land ball 12 feet from cup then 2 putt (2 strokes) par 4 snap hook again on 450 yd par 4 2nd shot hit fat to 180 of hole, try to clear hazard and land green from nasty downhill lie and hit fat again barely clears hazard, hit on green from 80 one putt 10 feet. (1 extra stroke pitch and putt saved a stroke) I counted a 48 after nine holes. 10 extra I attribute to the tee shot. The others were either lapses in concentration or long iron/woods that are also a problem. Its right there. Fellow golfers have told me there is little wrong with my short game. -

steelernation replied to kilbyman's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
look at my handicap, i generally shoot 94 to 98 so 15 + extra strokes come from a tee shot the result is a 79 to 83. The last time I 3 putted was at least 4 rounds ago. -
no topspin can be applied, its basically like slapping the ball and lifting steeply at impact. To the OP I assume you were a baseball player? /power hitter/ dead pull hitter?

I read most of the thread. ballstriking/swinging arms etc its all the same. Its the number one problem with me. My technique for longer shots is awful mostly because feeling the need to crush the ball. I have not practiced enough lately to try %80 with my driver. Once im within 100 yards, Im a 5 handicap. Im good at hitting greens and chipping(if I miss them) I generally never 2 putt. If it werent for my short game, I would be topping 100 every round. I lose at least 15 strokes a round to my tee shot. -
Yea thats more important than warming up. Nothing worse than having to go back to the clubhouse at the 4th hole. I wake up 2 hours ahead if possible and get to bed early. NO COFFEE. Your body will start waking up with a couple pints of fresh cold water. Then stretch and take full swings

How do they hit it so far???
steelernation replied to WhiteMF's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have never seen a pga pro hit " 6 iron 220 yards" I am very curious about the shape of the shot. Cant really see that on TV. Is their 6 iron going 220 at a high angle of attack or low? I hit one last week from the rough that distance, but it didnt get over 40 feet high. IMO in order of importance... Their contact with the sweet spot is near perfect. Their mechanics are finely tuned and they carry the best equipment which also matches their swing. They are generally either avg to larger men or are flexible to the %99 of the male population. -
1 for me from ,150 yards on a par 4. 2 attempts on par 5's this summer on 12-14 ft putts made birdie on both. 1 attempt on a par 4 -greenside chip from 30 feet, hit the drive like a champ, dinked the chip like a chump. ended up with a par, lessoned learned when you have a shot at eagle take the skirt off.

300 yards - fact or fiction: Post your experience
steelernation replied to Fat Slice's topic in Golf Talk
I dont avg 300, more like 220 with tops. wormburners and hooks. Take me to a range and ill hit 19 of 20 balls 300 yards plus. its very frustrating. -
What do my stats tell you?
steelernation replied to MikeLowry5's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
You have 1 out of 3 GIR. with %14 scrambling. Better than me. Then to top it a 1.94 putt avg. little higher than me. Im gonna guess that the holes your not on in GIR are placing you very far from the cup for your par putt. Ive worked quite a bit on getting within 5 feet from my birdie stroke if i'm not on GIR. Ive had 3 or 4 rounds when my number of putts was under 30 for the round, but the score was out of sight. My problem was getting to the kill zone of 140 yards. Yes I'll be lying 3 or 4 from the approach sometimes. -
Depending on the ESC determine what your maximum hole score can be, that may help a bit ......You play a lot like me. I dont lose strokes on the approach, I lose them off the tee. I play 4 or 5 pars and a birdie per round then some bogeys. To top it Ill have 3 triples or a couple quads. I usually shoot 92 to 95 but have a couple rounds under 90, the courses I play are fairly hard.
