  1. You, like a lot of others here, need to read my posts a bit more carefuly. I did not say that I did this. It was used as example of how there are differences. I totally disagree with it. The point about ostentation related to the name on a bag. The OP wanted to know what others thought.
  2. PLEASE put me on your ignore list as you promised to do. You seem to care inordinately about things which are just being thrown around as discussion points. Obviously, we don't agree, but in case you didn't get it, I was merely pointing out what I can assure you, is a very real cultural difference between our two fine nations. It is not a personal attack. I'm not even saying that I think "we" are right. To each his/her own. I don't care what you wear or buy.
  3. Who is this addressed to? If it is me you have made a very peculiar assumption. When did I say that I want to have brand names plastered all over my gear? If I was paid to advertise I would, but as I am not I choose to use a bag and clothes without logos. I also did not say that your own name was "bad". Sorry if I missed a post where someone said that they spend countless dollars having Callaway or Nike brand names on their gear. I certainly don't think it is cool for an amateur to pay to promote huge companies' equipment. But.....if that's what others like, good luck to them.
  4. He asked for points for and against. That's why. My location is Australia as I've frequently mentioned in my posts. I'm not sure why that is no longer under my avatar. Are you suggesting that the only people whose opinions matter are those of golfers in the US? I do not have a "distaste" for American culture at all. I have a serious distaste for a lot of personal characteristics of people form all nations especially when it comes to ostentation (golf related)and displays of wealth in locations where many people are not similarly advantaged. (not golf related) BUT - this is not saying that people can't do as they choose. And I am ALSO not saying that having your name on a bag strap is ostentatious. Could even be quite useful. Having a pro style bag with your name embroidered in large letters (which is what I should have made clear I was thinking of) would make you a laughing stock in any golf club I've played at in this country. I am just stating that - I'm not trying to modify your thoughts on the idea. Anyway - aren't I on your "ignore" list?
  5. You have answered your own question. With a handicap of of 17, "just making par or bogey" should be your goal. I would say that if going for it makes a double or triple bogey likely, lay up. But as you have implied, sometimes laying up gets you into trouble anyway because sometimes you don't pay attention to the "easy" lay up shot.
  6. I think you've got a pretty good, natural swing. The only things that I would say are: 1. When you address the ball and then slide the club up to the ball, it looks to me like the initial point you slide from is where you should actually be at address. Maybe you are a little too far away from the ball. 2. That rehearsal thing you do with the stiff wrists and snagging doesn't look relaxed to me. I would try to loosen that up a bit - but I know you're doing your version of the Mike Weir thing. 3. A bit of a forward press might relax you a little. 4. If that's a 7 iron, I think the ball might be a tiny bit too far back in your stance - maybe only an inch. Just my initial thoughts. I can say a lot of good things in your swing. Good luck!! P.S. Very nice of you to be hitting off that nasty bare patch with all that lovely grass around you!
  7. Like I said - it's one of those cultural things! I remember someone saying once - and I don't agree with it, but I know what he means - that in the US, if someone drives past in a Porsche people stand back and applaud, but here they'll run a 20c piece along the side of it! (if it's parked). We tend to be a little more understated here. If someone wants their name on their bag, great. All I was saying was that in this country it's a different mindset. I understand also that people in the US have bumper stickers saying things like "Proud mother of a grade A student driving" and suchlike.
  8. She can do whatever she likes. She doesn't need to do anything. Like most players with any profile at all, she will earn a lot more off the course than on it and she's cashing in while she can. _ and this is probably a freebie anyway. She says she's working on that hideous head drop thing but she still does it, so I don't think she'll ever be a serious force. Have to say that she comes across as a really nice person although I don't go for the "look". But at least you won't have to watch what is possibly the ugliest swing in professional golf if you watch her selling something. In any case, so what if she spends a few hours or a day doing publicity? Good on her!
  9. Pebble Beach. It is not sponsored by a tobacco company.
  10. You don't need a bank. You only need to be able to type. Just open a new topic called "need help" or similar and away you go. Here is a royalty free template. I am a scratch golfer, but am having difficulty hitting (insert shot type here) shots. Can anyone help?. or I am a scratch golfer and want to buy a new (name club here). Does anyone have any recommendations? When someone replies and says that being a scartch marker the problem shouldn't arise, you can get really angry and attack the poster for being a "hater". Bingo...you are a scratch marker because they can't prove you aren't.
  11. .....and the answer was pretty emphatic along the lines of "There is no specific time - perhaps never a time". And regarding your boast that you have the same skills in iron play as the scratch player is not supported by what you said. So what if he's longer? You're still hitting irons into the greens. If he can give you 14 shots a round, your iron play is not comparable. If it was the case, you might find that your 5 iron is roughly as good as his 7 iron.
  12. The way I see it, pros have their names embroidered on their bags, amateurs do not. Amateurs playing at an international level might have a discreet flag of their country stitched to their bag. This might be an example of the difference between Australians and Americans, but if you paid me $10,000 to play with a bag with my name embroidered on it, I wouldn't take it because the riducule and embarrassment I'd suffer would not be worth it.
  13. I'll bet you wouldn't. The reason they call it work is because they have to pay you to do it. Doesn't mean that you can't see good in it. But, seriously, what a ridiculous question.
  14. I've never heard a really good player boast about distances off the tee. Where's the "driver accuracy" thread?
  15. Very odd post from someome who claims to be a scratch golfer. The idea of a scratch marker not being able to draw an iron is, to be frank, something I've never heard of. I've also never seen a scartch player who is a "bad" iron player. So.....you get around in par figures but have problems that a 25 marker might complain of. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
