I rarely plan in scrambles but will be joining my brother-in-law for one in Naples, FL this week.

I usually play ProV1's but think that it is kind of a waste to use them off the tee down there because:

1) I don't know the course and don't want to lose them on shots that take a little local knowledge.

2) I am pretty long with my driver (265-290) but can sometimes lose them right and left....again losing balls or spending time looking for them. If I know they are far away, I would rather just leave them on the course, backyard, etc.

I am thinking about just hitting Top-Flites off the tees and ProV's into greens. Is that allowed in a scramble? Also, the thought of hitting Rock-Flites kinda makes me sick. So, any advice on decent cheap golf balls that go far?

In my bag:

Hybrids: Cleveland HiBore 19*

You're a ten handicap so it's presumably not the case that you're spraying every third ball OB. If you usually use V1xs, maybe just step down to the NXT balls or even the DT whatevers and don't sweat it

Another option is to buy some discount balls from eBay (you can get AAAA quality used balls for cheap - this is a good way to fill a shag bag for half price or better).
In the bag 8/12/09:

Bridgestone e6's. About $6/sleeve or Titleist NXT Tour's. Good alternatives to $4.50/per ball.

The new Top-Flite D2 series of balls are 100 x's better than their predecesors. The D2 Feel are especially nice as they do a pretty decent PV1 imitation. Plus you can pick 'em up for $15-$18 for a 15-pack. I use to be a "Rock-Flite" hater myself but these balls have definitely changed my mind.

Most scrambles don't require that you hit the same ball from tee to green. I know people that will use 3 balls. Distance/harder ball off the tee, softer/spin into green, super soft/spin around the green.

IMO use the ball that you are comfy with. You go changing your game and you will find you are disappointed...IMO

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
