I hit my driver better than a 3 wood..

Is anyone else in the same boat as me? It makes no real sense. I have the Titleist D2 driver and a TP Burner 3 wood. I thought the 3 wood is the go to club for nice straight shots. Yesterday, I hit my driver way more consistent. I'm guess its due to the drivers larger head and MOI??

If you have a high-lofted driver (11* or 12*), I could see how you might hit it better just because the head is so much bigger.

No it doesnt really make sense unless you never practice with your 3wood and always with your driver. But maybe its the 3wood that gives you problems. I have a TP Burner 2w and a Burner 3w - and latter is just so much easier to hit.

I have the same problem, I want to try and play safe, but I hit my driver straighter than my 3w, and then when I hit my driver, I feel I'm not really playing that safe. I guess I could use an iron, but I'm not too great with them off the tee either.. So I really have no choice.

It's always been that way for me as well.

I think it's a hold-over from the not to distant past when the profile of a 3 wood wasn't all that different from the driver. In my experience, It's just not true any more that a 3 wood is easier to hit, yet people still say it.

my thoughts exactly. i think its also the fact that I don't practice much with the 3 wood. I guess i need to start doing that. I bet i could start shaving strokes off those tight par 4's.

btw, my driver is 9.5 and 3 wood is 14.5

I bought a new Cobra L4V driver (f-speed, 9*) a couple weeks ago, and suddenly achieved something like control over my drives, which I've never really had at all, and that meant I was hitting my driver with far greater consistency than my 3 or 5 wood. Trying to go back and practice with my 3 and 5 after upgrading to the 460cc driver was very frustrating because I was having trouble finding the sweet spot or even the face of the club, and was beginning to wonder if those clubs even had a sweet spot.

So I went Dick's and bought a new 3W and 5W, and chose them based mostly on size of face. I ended up with Max-Fli based on that criterion. Now I hit them much better than I was hitting my old ones, but still not as well as I hit my driver. I'll be practicing to see if I can learn to hit them straighter and more consistently.

I definitely hit my driver more consistently than my 3-wood. I bought it recently but have been just going to the 3 hybrid instead since its so inconsistent.

There's this article from Golf Digest a few months back discussing the benefit of using driver against 3-wood. One thing I can remember of is that driver has bigger MOI which translates to more forgiveness.

I was in the same boat until recently. I used to take a choked down driver on a short par 4 to avoid long irons and other woods. Now I have been striking the 3 wood very well just thinking about an 80% swing with a full release. I now have more confidence in my 3 wood than driver.
