I was making a right corner turn on a red..I was rolling and didn't come to a full stop..to be honest..camera flashed in front of me..on the other side of tne street.

Was it taking my picture? Do they take pictures for not stopping fully on right turns on red?

That is a good question. Havent had much experience with them so I really dont know. How would the camera be set off? How does the camera know if you are rolling or not? I dont know! But you should know in about a week or two.

How could a single photograph (instant in time) provide evidence that you were not stopped? Hopefully it was just intended to catch the idiots that blast straight through the intersection as the light turns red.

The camera(s) only take a picture when they determine a law has been broken. In other words, red light in intersection yet car still coming through. The picture is to identify both license plate and who was driving the car, since they don't want you getting a ticket if your friend was driving (nor do they want everyone claiming "I wasn't driving!").

So it's not so much that the picture proves you broke the law, but the fact that the camera took a picture at all is the proof and the picture simply shows who actually broke the law.

I spoke a friend of mine, Long Beach Police Dept. motorcop, and he said 2 things happen when the photos take a picture:

1. The picture gets sent to an actual person that review the photos.

2. That reviewer must determine how "serious" the offense was.

So, yes, there is alot of discretion here. He told me if you were completely in the wrong then yes you'd get a ticket but if it was questionable then you wouldn't get one..depending on who was reviewing it.

I went to a website that actually posted the stats for the intersection that was in question and it turns out out of all the photos they take about 15% of them get actual tickets..interesting huh.

Anyway, it's been over a month now since the incident and still no sign. My cop friend told me they city has 15 business days to issue a citation..phew

Maverick, I am about 90% sure that the camera was not taking your picture. They do have cameras that do so, but in your case because you were making a right turn I highly doubt that the state is going to send you a summons anyway, regardless if it was taking a picture or not. I have one of them near where I live that flashes, but from what I was told it is not to take pictures of the intersection.

Forgot to add this. Plus if you were allowed to make a right turn on red at that intersection, and it snaps a picture of you, then how would the state prove that you didnt stop first before proceeding through the intersection. Its impossible. No person would want to prosecute that ticket. I think your good to go.

Well I heard they also take small digital video clips..not sure if this specific intersection did..but one of those things where the mind wanders you know..anyway..it seems there's no threat.

yes it was. My Wifes coworker recently got a ticket from this in the mail. You can fight it but not sure that it will be worth the time since it is no points.

I am a civil engineer with some knowledge in transportation and if you ask for the information leading to there ticket I could help decipher it for you. I got a speeding red light ticket and just paid it, I knew they had me. they take 2 photos at 2 different points and they assess whether or not you could stop and get to point B in the time allotment. That is where it can get tricky, if you have a 5 second car then of course you can but if you have a hybrid... no. I hope they just figured you were marginal and opted not to send you a ticket. PS - There is a spray film available that makes the plate picture unviewable. they are trying to get it outlawed in some states so be careful with it.
