Where's the Cart Girl?



Just wanted to throw this out and see if anyone else does this. This is not a picture of me but the pic is close. I interlock my left index finger and right pinky, and my right thumb is more across my left thumb than down-shaft, but nonetheless the focus is the right index finger ...

No one else I play with does this. I feel like it keeps my wrists from breaking, especially on long putts, because I can feel the club try to bend my finger back when my left wrist tries to bend toward the target. I've heard claims that having my finger down the shaft like that invites my right hand to become too passive though and causes me to "steer" the club with my left hand. And, I must admit, my miss is a pull more often than not.

I know that putting grip is a very preferential aspect of the game and very few individuals are the same. I putt okay with this grip, and it's comfortable to me. Please don't just say, "If you like it and it works, who cares?" I'm looking for actual feedback if there are others on here who do this, or play with people who do it, and if they notice what I do. Or, for you rock star putters, what are your takes on what this might cause? Thanks.

My new grip is a little different (right index finger not resting on shaft but on the grip), but I tried it for 18 holes today for the first time, and had only one 3-putt (versus at least 7 on avg for last five rounds). My approach shots were not much closer to the pin, so this new grip (the only change), definitely helped me. I suggest you go to the putting green and give it a try - only have fewer putts to lose. I actually do have mine on the grip. I didn't really pay attention just how far this guys is gripping down on the club when I posted the pic. My finger is extended but still on the grip. My bad.

I guess the feedback I'm looking for is just having the finger extended down as opposed to wrapped underneath. And it seems this works for you as well.

I extend my index finger, as you do, keeping it on the grip. Tom Lehman putts with an extended index finger down the grip.

Of note, my misses tend to be pulls. To fight this, I try to hold the putter head facing perpendicular to the putting line (instead of letting my right forearm rotate over the left)

I also put my index finger like that. Mine stays on the grip though. It seems to help me keep everything aligned.

yeah my putting grip is like that but stays on the grip, it helps me go straight back and through.

My lone 3-putt today was a slight pull - this maybe the one down-side of this grip (at least for a strong righty).

My golfing buddy's Dad calls it the "Whiskey Dangler", but this has a few different meanings.

For me, this is my third conscious putter grip change this season, and is by far the most successful one. Still needs to be modified to fine-tune hand position on the grip, and any spacing or overlap. Currently, I use the Varden Grip, and also slightly extend the left index finger down the grip as well. There is still no substitute for practicing and getting comfortable with any good putting grip.

I just did this about 5 minutes ago in my living room, then I come on here and I see this post!

Very weird, but yea, I just was messing around with grips tonight and came across this type of grip, I like it a lot, on my takeaway with my conventional putter grip, the putter comes back wobbly sometimes,

Tonight with this tweak to the grip, it feels like it really comes back and through nice and straight!

Im loving this grip!

Ha. I never heard either of these phrases to describe this, but the fact that it has its place in the vernacular of the game lends it creedence in my book. Glad to hear. If anyone has any insight as to why these are used, please, do tell...

"Whiskey Finger" is a saying to measure the amount of the drink poured into a glass. It means that the whiskey glass is filled to the height of a finger held either horizontally (or vertically in some cases), to the table on which the whiskey glass sits.

Some single-malt whisky drinkers pour their drams meaured in "fingers" (usually a horizontal measurement) - again parallel to the glass. My preference is three-fingers (sometimes four depending on the day).

The expression also translates into a position whereby the index finger extends downward, as is in this case referencing a putting grip.

Just old drinking vernacular getting recycled...

Hmm. I was hoping for something better than that. I know about measuring booze with fingers, I just thought there was going to be something more clever to it; a la the phrase "whiskey d*ck" - which most certainly does not refer to using that to measure a drink.

Was expecting it to have something to do with guys needing that finger to stabilize the putter when they're blitzed out on the course. Oh well.

      after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....

      this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
