After Hitting a lot of clubs and doing a l lot of research Ive narrowed it down to these to iron sets. From what I have read and heard I cant go wrong with either of these. The price is about the same and I hit them both pretty much the same but the only thing that is bothering me with the X-20 are the uniflex steel shaft compared to the Tstep90 shaft with the R-7. When I hit both of the X-20 at golf galaxy I was hitting into a net about 10 yards or so in front of me so I could not see the ball flight. The R7 I hit about a month ago at golf galaxy and I hit into a simulator so I could see the ballflight but Im not sure how accurate it was. Basically what I am wondering is for the people who have hit both sets at a range where you can see your ballflight, How did the x-20 compare to the R-7? I hit my irons fairly high right now but it is the way I like it. Judging by the simulator I have a lower penetrating ball flight with the R7 which I think I could get used to. But with the x-20 Im not sure.

I switched to Callaway X20 irons this spring after hitting stiff-shafted Ping Eye2 clones for about 14 years.

Compared to the R7...

Both iron models have large heads, full offset and high trajectory launch.

X20, however, allows a bit more workability, and has a somewhat thinner sole and topline.

The X20's Uniflex shaft is a firm-regular (i.e., it's a regular shaft, but not spongy; some have likened it to between a 5.0 and 5.5 using Project X measures). Also, the Uniflex is a midkick, low torque shaft. It gets the ball up, but doesn't really balloon it. Much easier to hit than my old stiffs.
To summarize, high-launch head, mid-launch shaft.

The shaft you mentioned for the R7 was hard to find info on. Couldn't seem to find it on the TaylorMade or the True Temper sites. Best I could find was two posts on the GolfWRX board:

GW likens the shaft to a lightweight S300. In your post, you don't mention your driver swingspeed.

My only complaint about the X20s: They're a bit sticky to hit out of the rough.

On R7: I get the idea from TM's site they have a draw bias. X20s might be a more versatile club it you want to work the ball a little (foregiveness + workability). And, you should be able to get some good prices on X20s.

Well I ended up buying the X-20 4-Pw off of timtheputterman on ebay for $310 shipped. I recieved them from ups yesterday and called callaway to verify that the clubs are authentic and everything turned out just fine. I realize the putterman has a good reputation but I wanted to be sure. The only problem I have now is that its currently 38 degrees outside so im not sure when I will be able to take them to the range. Although, I think it is supposed to be in the 50 or 60's this weekend so hopefully Ill be able to take them out. Thanks to everyone who has given me advice through this long process of buying new irons. Ill try to post here again after I am able to put in some range time with my new clubs. Thanks again.

Congrats! I also tried both those clubs, but wen't with the R7's as they just seemd to be a little more consistant for me. It is really a personal choice, for sure...

Long story short: I'm switching from RH clubs to LH clubs and have the choice to get either set used for less than $100.  This will probably only be a short lived set as I hope to upgrade sometime next year, but since I only have an R9 six iron right now, I am in the market so I can play some during the fall.

I was wondering if anyone else had any comments about either?  I've never owned either brand in terms of irons, and won't really have the chance to try them.

As for the R9, I like it, but don't love it.  The weight seems odd if that makes any sense.  Prior to my switch I had some ancient  blades, but converted to Mizuno JPX-800s earlier this year.  Again, the LH conversion is all new to me, so I don't have any habits or expectations.

switching from right to lefty so: 

tinkering with a plethora of equipment and brands; I now feel like its all about mechanics and less equipment- stay tuned

I bought a used set of R7 irons when I got back into golf last year (largely on the advice of this forum), and I've been very happy with them. But everybody is different, and I'm sure the X-20s are good too. Hard to go wrong I'd say, just depends what you prefer.

I have a backup set of R7s.  I think they're a very nice set, forgiving, long, but setup fine and don't appear/feel like a SGI or bigger GI set.

One thing I noticed, they are very light, which makes sense as they're listed as D0 swingweight on TMs site.

      Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.

      That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.

      This is the part I don’t get. He’s not even kind of sandbagging, he’s blatantly doing it and submitting scores that are verified to be incorrect. How he’s not banned from competition is beyond me.

      He's right in what he's saying.I also have done this experiment with a golf shaft swinging with one arm at a time.one arm at a time is for me very fast but both hands together are very slow ..I got my 17 year old son to do this experiment and he swung very fast with either hand and he swung very fast with both hands together..My conclusion up to now is ; I'm not using my wrists properly but I not a 100 percent sure just yet..I will keep trying to fathom this out .I'm a 12 handicap and my son is 3.9 at Westlancs..
