I read an article about the Trail and it said that you get to play really nice courses for the money. My questions are: Being that there are a lot of courses that makeup the trail, what courses are not to be missed? Looking to play about 4 times in 3 days. Can we make a hotel the center point and play those four courses in the surrounding area? Flying in from Chicago, so what city would be best to fly into? If I think of anything else, I'll chime back in. Any info as always is very much appreciated. Thanks!

That's a hard decision with the RTJ Trail. The Shoals(Fighting Joe and Schoolmaster) are excellent. Hampton Cove(Highlands and River) is my favorite. If I had to choose for a 3 day trip, I would go with Ross Bridge(WOW, beautiful and difficult) and Oxmoor Valley(Ridge and Valley). They are both fairly close to Birmingham and Ross Bridge has one of the best resort/spa/hotels in the area. They both have excellent short/par 3 courses as well. You could actually get in more than 4 rounds if you added them to your plan. Go to rtjgolf.com to make reservations and tee times as well as great directions. I hope this helps.

For 4 rounds on the trail I'd recommend staying at Capitol Hill in Prattville just outside Montgomery. There is a hotel on site and three very nice courses, the Judge, Legislator and Senator. My favorite trail location is cambrian Ridge about 40 minutes South of Capitol Hill. They have 27 holes there plus a par 3 course. The Sherling and Canyon 9's at Cambrian may be the best 18 holes on the trail. I don't know if you can fly directly to Montgomery from Chicago. If you can't, consider flying in to Atlanta and driving. If you get an early morning flight, drive to Opilaka (near Auburn, not far from the GA/AL border) and play a round at Grand National. The two courses there., Links and Lakes are similar and both very good. After your round, drive to Capitol Hill and make that your headqaurters. The next day play 36 holes at capitol Hill. The last day either play the course that you missed at Capitol or take the short drive to Cambrian Rideg or go back to Grand National and play the course you missed there. Then back to Atlanata and home.

Here are links to my pix of the RTJ courses I mentioned

Note these pix are from a Feb trip. The courses look nicer when it's not winter, but they play well all the time.

my decision might be a little biased but the rtj in pratville is very nice and the senator course is a very hard and unforgiving links style course that the lpga goes to every year plus there is a hotel on the 17th hole of the senator course and there is also another hotel that is very nice called the renissance only a couple of minutes away

Being form Montgomery you may be biased, but you are right... Capitol Hill

IS very nice. On the other hand, I don't think the Senator course is that difficult. They may let the rough get higher near when the LPGA plays. IMO the Judge is more difficult. The main thing is to play from the right tees and keep the ball in the fairway. The Senator is not among my favorites on the trail, but I like it beacuse stylistically it is a good change of pace from the other courses on the Trail. It is more "linksy" looking than the others. It's funny that they call one of the layouts at Grand National the "Links" course, as that course has little in common with a links. One thing about ALL of the RTJ sites is that the greens and greens complexes are difficult. On many holes if you don't hit your approach shot to the right part of the green you can easily 3 putt. The greens are sometimes mutli-tiered or multi sectioned and/or have hazards close by so the trail really tests your short game and putting. ACA - Have you ever eaten at Fat Boys BBQ? That was our favorite when we stayed in Pratville.

I'm not familiar w/the entire Trail, but I am familiar with Birmingham and Montgomery...either way, you won't be disappointed. I am close to SILVER LAKES, great courses, however, not a helluva lot to do after your golfing.
