i know cutting 1" off my driver shaft will change the swingweight and it wont fly as far... but will it make a huge difference??

i'm looking for a bit more control with my driver, and i honestly dont like these newer longer shafts..

i'm contemplating cutting down one of my old drivers that i've retired to see if i'll like it. have any of you guys tried this?? if so, what effect did it have?? i know this thread has been posted before, ive searched but the info i've found is'nt exactly what i'm looking for...

also, i'm going to reshaft my mp fli hi 3 iron.. the s300 shaft is a bit too stiff for me, i was wondering what the little plastic ferrule does? is it just for looks or does it have a reason for being there?? (it'll be my first time reshafting)

First for the driver, try cutting it down a 1/2 inch. You'd be surprised how much of an effect that will have. You will gain more control as the shaft is longer. Don't expect to lose tons of yards, You won't. I think most of us would love to gain more accuracy if we could sacrifice a few yards

About re-shafting the 3 iron. The ferrule doesn't really have a specific purpose other than the fact that most iron heads are now made for a ferrule (Every one except Ping?) I think the club would look goofy with out it. Your going to have to cut it off in order to take the shaft off. Ferrule are extremely cheap so make sure you have another one to replace the one you cut off.

First, cutting a driver shaft shorter is never bad. 45" is way too long, and 43" is much more sensible. Most people will

gain distance when they cut their driver shorter. Always remember, hitting the center of the club face solves all problems (my mantra). The difference between a pure driver and an off center one for me is 220-270. I could gain a lot more distance with my swing speed, but I'd rather hit it pure more often.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
