This past weekend I went on a buddy's trip to Alabama for a long weekend of golf. Played three courses with the favorite being "FarmLinks" outside Birmingham. Great course, great amenites and service from the staff. Not cheap, $125, but that's all inclusive. Unlimited golf, snacks and drinks, and lunch. Teeing off early and playing all day makes that a fantastic value especially when you consider that the course is in tip top shape and the layout takes your breath away.

Anyway on the par 3 17th, which is all carry over water, I hit my first shot short and left (pulled it). It hit the bank in front of the green and trickled down into the water. I hit another ball and did the same thing only worse and it splashed down way in the water. So we head down to the green where I figure I'll take a drop where the first one went into the hazard and play out, but as I got down there you could plainly see a ball sitting up in the water by the slope. Sure enough it was my first ball, and my partners encouraged me to play it. I figured they just wanted to see me get wet, but since it was sitting up pretty good (about 25% out of the water) I figured what the heck. I took off one shoe and sock and addressed the ball and let er rip. The ball came out of the water and landed right at the top of the slope only to roll back down, but it did hang up in the grass. I'm about to chip up when the sound of applause comes from the tee box accross the water where the next group where standing and had watched the whole thing (they were also part of our group). I was a bit flustered by the whole thing, but I went on to card a tripple bogey 6. All in all I figured I fared better than I could have hitting a third ball from the drop zone laying 5 possibly on the green, so I was pretty happy. Also it was agreed upon that the shot from the water was pretty cool even though it just came up short. It was worth a drink after we got back to the home where we were staying and even though my score could have been better (I wound up with an 85 for the round) it helped to make the round one I'll never forget.

Congrats. Betcha you never do it again.

I hit a water shot once, several years ago, just to see if I could do it and I did. Ball fully submerged in ankle deep water. Rolled up my pants. Barefoot. Used a sand wedge. Made contact and it got in the air and flew about 30 yards back onto the fairway. Still got muddy and wet and it wasn't like I was making big bucks off the shot. Never again.

To be honest I hope you're right. I did get wet, although with the heat that wasn't exactly terrible, I just cleaned up with the provided towel and got new ones back at the club house after lunch. I was surprised that the ball actually came out of the water, and considering where I was in the hole (hitting a third ball from the drop zone and hopefully hitting the dance floor in 5) it worked out pretty good. The best part was how all my partners (in both our groups) got such a kick out of how I played the hole. I was just glad I was able to finish the hole properly. That's the first time I've ever done that. I've never even seen anyone try that, so that made it pretty amazing in my book.

Why would you lay 5 on the green if you hit the third from the drop zone? At a par 3, you should be able to get the ball on the green from a drop zone. Which would leave you with a two-putt for 5.

My first off the tee was in the water (and I thought out of play), so I hit another ball from the tee, which also went into the water. So now I'm laying 3. Drop another one at the drop zone, and that would have been my fifth stroke (3 strokes and 2 penaty strokes). As we got to the drop zone I saw a ball sitting in the water and figured it was mine, so I went on to see and it was, so I played my first ball which I had assumed on the tee was lost.

I don't even like playing out of the sand let alone the WATER. I'll bet it was a fun shot, and the fact that you even got it out of the water, I agree and call AMAZING!!

Did you call the second ball a provisional? If not, it was a new ball in play, and you could not play on the first ball.

    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
