First off, is it possible to remove 1" from a steel shaft? If so, would it drastically alter the performance of the club, assuming I've never hit it before? Meaning... would the club have to be totally refitted due to the new length?

Also, what kind of cost could I expect to have 1" removed from 5 or 6 clubs?

Thanks!

Yes, it's possible to remove 1" from steel shaft. I'm assuming you've been fit by a certified fitter for a -1" set?

Most shops will charge you to remove the grip, cut the shaft and install a new grip. Sometimes they can save the grip, but it only saves a few dollars as there is usually a fee for that too. You'd likely pay around $12 - 15 per club to have it all done, depending on the price of the grip you choose.

Im pretty sure you should not have a problem since they are 1" over standard. If they were standard length and you had them shortened 1" then they would need some weight added for swingweight purposes.

it depends where they cut it from.

If they cut it from the tip (unlikely) the shaft will play a lot stiffer.
If they cut it from the butt the swing weight will be affected.

Sounds like it's probably in my best interest to not try to save a few bucks by purchasing clubs this way. It'd be a savings of MAYBE $100 (and more likely less), and that's just with a 'simple' cutting/regripping. Thanks for the input!

look, you could get them cut down.

There shouldn't be an incredible difference (i.e you're shots are veering off miles more right/left than normal) but you'll notice a little bit of a difference. Your probably going to own the clubs for a good few years so you should get something that you like instead of trying to save a few bucks here and there.

Yeah, that's the general conclusion I'm coming to. Over the life of the clubs, the savings are hardly worth it. And the REAL kicker - I don't even truly need them, it's more of impulse, "want" type of thing. Definitely don't need them. Don't you just hate when your irons have held up so well that you never have a reason for shiny new equipment?!

Yep, my cobra's are still looking good but whenever I walk into the pro shop I want to buy a new set of irons.

You've got to fight it though!
