First, I apologize for starting up my 3rd thread in about 2 months regarding drivers.

I'm at a different stage of my game and driver.

i'm currently hitting a stiff shaft 9 degree.. 68 grams.. Ping Rapture

when i hit it good, i can hit this thing 270 i'd say about....when i hit it bad high fade, when i hit it really bad (shank) complete slice, embarrassing.

tomorrow i'm going to pick up my Ping G15, 9 degree regular shaft. I'm thinking of cutting it down to 44 and a half inches...just like my ping rapture.

question...by me cutting it 1 inch, will this make ...

1) the shaft softer?

2) the shaft stiffer?

3) the kick point rise?

i was talking to someone at the course today and he was kinda briefing me on this stuff but i didn't get all of it. so i'm wanting some advise in here before i go in tomorrow and cut my ping shaft an inch.

oh...also, my swing speed is between 90-92.

would love to hear some advise from you guys...you guys have provided some solid advise before so i appreciate all that you can provide me!

oh..and the reason why i want to cut the shaft are for 2 reasons...

1) i love the feel of the ball being closer to my as i feel more comfortable standing closer with a more upright swing

2) with the regular shaft i tend to swing fast at times so i don't want the club to lag so much and produce a slice

The swingweight of your shaft will change slightly cutting it an inch (will be lighter). It will probably also play slightly stiffer (I know iron shafts tend to, but I'm unsure about driver).

Assuming you're butt trimming the shaft it will have a negligible effect on stiffness.  If you're tip trimming the shaft it will get stiffer and the kick point will theoretically move down the shaft thus producing a lower trajectory.

Sorry but either your swing speed is wrong, or your distances are wrong. A 90-92 mph swing speed with a 9 degree driver would have trouble breaking 210 on the fly and 225 or 230 absolute max with a nice roll.

If your geninely a 90-92 swing speed then I think a reg flex 9 degree with a slightly shortened shaft would be fine, you would not be able to tell the difference.

If you genuinely hit it 270, your swing speed is likely 105-10 and you should be using a stiff flex.

    • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
    • 43 (6 over) Couple bogies, couple Pars, a birdie and no doubles. Not bad for first 9 of the year.
    • Most the stuff I found on Instagram and just copy and mix it up. a few of my favorites: Clean>Squat>Press> March Around the body >catch >Squat> press I also hold a the kettle bell upside down with both hands on the handle. Squat when I stand back up I lift the kettlebell up over and behind my head and hold then repeat
    • Not sure this is the best thread but, if the rain holds off, today is my 1st round of the year.  Getting ready I can not find my Shot Scope.  I guess I put it away too well for the winter and thus that is may "Winter Depression".  I'm sure I put it somewhere that made sense at the time.
