I've been thinking about being fitted for a new shaft for my driver. My stats have improved since getting the new Ping G20 but I thought they could improve more, I'll change shafts from the stock Ping shaft. I looked at some of the online fitting guides and they seem hit or miss. SK Fiber's offices are basically across the street from where I work so I talked to them yesterday and they don't do personal fitting but he gave me a name of a guy the works part time at Dick's to go see.

1) Is it worth the cost to be fitted for a driver shaft?

2) Think I can trust going to Dick's or should I look else where?

SK Fiber recommended a guy from Dick's?  Do you have any other info about him?  Could you talk to him to see what you'd get for your money?  There are some launch monitors such as http://www.flightscope.com/ that are very sophisticated and measure shaft droop, the angle of the club face at impact, etc.  Of course, that takes time, and not every fitter goes to that extent when fitting their customers.

I went by Dick's this afternoon and talked to the guy SK told me about. It appears to me that he does club fitting/building on the side at home but works at dick's part time. I didn't have my driver with me today but he took some static measurments, quized me about ball flight etc., then hit about 1/2 dozen balls on the launch monitor with a Burner driver. He said he was mainly looking at club head speed. I'm going back Wednesday with my drivers to get the final numbers.

Talking with him he seems to know what he's talking about and since SK recommended him, I'll give him a chance.

The stock shaft in my G20 ended up actually being too stiff for me. After checking club head speed, lauch angle, spin rates, etc.. and then checking the CPM on the stock shaft, it's too stiff, actually closer to x-stiff than stiff. I'm going to try a SK Fiber Helium shaft, trimmed and pured to match my swing. All of this for $60. For that, It's worth a try to see if improves any. If I don't like it, he'll refund my money and charge me $20 to put my stock shaft back in. Pick it up this afternoon.

That sounds great, and I have the feeling the new shaft will be an improvement for you.  Keep us posted!

Love the new shaft. Only missed 2 fairways and even picked up a few yards. Shot my lowest round of the year, 78. Granted it was on a short 6000 yds course with a slope of 109, but still a good score. Of course, one of the fairways I missed (pulled left) was on 18 with 10 holes carrying. Got behind a tree and had to lay up short of the green and ended up making bogie. Good thing I had won most of the holes on the front and had some trash marks or it would have been costly.

    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
    • This is the part I don’t get. He’s not even kind of sandbagging, he’s blatantly doing it and submitting scores that are verified to be incorrect. How he’s not banned from competition is beyond me.
