hey guys. yesterday i was hitting some balls and on one of the shots i somehow hit way behind the ball jamming my wrist and causing the club to fall to the floor. anyway, that got me wondering "how much can a club take?". what i mean by this is how much abuse like hitting hard into the ground will a club take until the shaft snaps, or the head comes off? thanks

i had a head come off a iron after a normal shot and i've grounded clubs pretty hard that have never flinched. a guy at the range snapped the head off his driver after a solid hit, and the guy from maroon 5 snapped an r11 with haney on a pretty normal swing.

i think the strength at the hosel will hold up to a lot, but as you go up the shaft it probably gets significantly weaker.

I snapped my 5 iron's uniflex shaft when I hit behind the ball before I got fitted. Weird moment... but it gave me the extra oomph to actually go through with it.

I had a set a few years ago that I picked up a Sports Authority. Can't remember the brand, but it was on sale for $130 for the whole set. Graphite shafts on everything except the putter. After about a year of using them, I started having the heads break off right at the hosels. It wouldn't be on a bad swing either. I would just hit it normal, it would sound weird, and the head would fly farther than the ball. First couple that broke, I just had the re shafted with TT shafts. Then after 3 broke, I got fitted, and got a new set. Cheap graphite shafts and a higher swing speed didn't mix well.

  • 3 weeks later...

sorry to bring this thread back up, but i guess im prone to hitting things i dont see. i was swinging in my yard and i guess on my divont i hit a rock out of the ground that was like the size of a ping pong ball. either way i went inside aand smoothed out the scratches on the bottom with some sandpaper till the scratches were only visible. i dont really care about the aesthetics, but do you think this would have damaged the shaft inside the hosel? it was a full swing and pretty fast.

I've never had a shaft break unless I did something wrong.  Used to break them against my back on my follow through as a kid.  That was due to a swing flaw and overswinging.  My first set of irons were cheap alloy heads.  I had 2 of them snap off low on the hosel during the regular course of play.

This is why I don't like to hit off a mat. Mats don't give way.
