What tees to play from?

Before I started this thread, I did some research and there is a lot of stuff out there.  Plenty of articles/threads that have good advice on if you hit your driver x yards then you can play tees in x - x range, and stuff like that.  I know what tees I should play when we are in season.  I was wondering more about out of season and even the etiquette involved in that.

 

I don't want to be viewed as a "wuss", but that the same time I am not stupid enough to try to play from tees that are way too far out for my skill level.  My club has three sets of mens tees and in season I play from the middle set which plays at just under 6400 yards.  The tips play from around 6800 yards and that's too far for me even in season.  The first tees are just over 6000 yards.  It seems though that most of the people at my club do not move up off season and in cold weather.  Most of those people also do not care about their score as much as I do though either. 

 

Is it acceptable for me to play from those tees if it's really cold out and we are not in season?  Please chime in and share how you evaluate what tees you will play from. 

I play from Gold which is one level from the Seniors. Given that I am completely redoing my swing, I am thinking I am going to be there awhile.

I believe the Tees are dependent on your skill level. That being said, I would recommend tee'ing forward in order to speed up pace of play for your fellow golfers.

I always try to play from the back tees.  At my home course that's 6600-6700 yds.  It's not because I hit the ball a mile (I don't)...it's because I enjoy the challenge of hitting mid/long irons into the greens.   I'm working towards being able to consistently hit a 5 or 6 iron into a green.  I'm not there yet, but I feel like I will never get there unless I practice those shots on a regular basis.  I dont enjoy hitting driver - wedge all day. 

My game has got to the point where I don't misshit my tee shots so badly that I have outrageously long approach shots.  I think this is the key.  Most people play from tees that are too long...and dont get off the tees consistently.  This is a frustrating way to play.

Now, when I play with other people that I dont know as well...I will usually play from whatever tees they want.  I will never pressure anyone into playing from the back tees. 

Playing during the winter months is a great time to work on different aspects of your game, if your out playing solo.

Usually golf courses will have fewer golfers on the course which allows for some practice time.

I like to tackle shots while on the course which I need to make adjustments or attack a hole with a different perspective which I played poorly.

I'll sometimes hit 5-7 shots from a spot with a couple of different clubs.

You can mix it up and play from different tees on these days.

When spring comes and the weather warms up, you'll be a step ahead and ready to play your game.
