I'm a recreational golfer with a relatively inexpensive set of standard clubs. I'm 5'6". And even so, I hold my hands pretty low to the ground at address...

So, perhaps needless to say, if I hold the grip normally, the toe points towards the sky, making it more difficult to make pure contact and groove a proper swing. Furthermore, the longer clubs are just hard for a short guy like me to wield.

So I've been choking up on most clubs, I'd say 8-iron and longer. Is this acceptable? I do feel more in control when I do so, and the clubhead seems to provide a better lie at address for me.

I do worry about shot consistency, as I may wind up gripping any given club at a different place every time. Also, since the grip on the club itself becomes effectively smaller (less diameter), that may cause proper face squaring issues.

I guess another way to ask about my concerns is: Should I just choke up? Or is it worth it to get my relatively cruddy clubs fitted [even though I do like my clubs, a lot].

When going through the fitting process they measure the distance of your wrist to the floor, then there is a table of recommended driver and 5 iron lengths.  Knowing these measurements you figure out how long the other clubs should be.  It is standard to have a 1/2" difference in length between each subsequent club.  For example a 2W is 1/2" shorter than a Driver, a 6 iron is 1/2" shorter than a 5 iron.  If you tell me what your wrist to floor measurement is, I can look up the recommended Driver and 5 iron lengths.

This is from Golfsmith's Basics of Clubmaking book.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • Hence your Avatar!😜 I drink a lot of water during the day if I’m playing or exercising. I get cramps otherwise.
    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
