Alright. I'm ready to be taught a few things and I do not feel the need to go in to get fitted just yet until I learn some facts. I'm wanting to know if I'm ready to change my club heads on my irons. Currently I have a callaway ftiq 9 degree driver, stiff shaft that I average 280 with. My swing speed is 113. My iron set is Adams (idk what model but are cavity back, reg shaft) I hit them straight but not far at all. My 4 iron is 170 on a good day. What kind of irons would be helpful to my game for better distance.

A set that is fitted for your swing. I would say a more player-ish iron with a Center of Gravity that isn't too low. Cavity backs can have too low of a center of gravity and cause you to hit the ball too high for your swing speed. I played a game improvement iron, even with a low launching heavy golf shaft and the ball just went way too high for me.

If you are not hitting your irons far, and you are a 5.6 I would say that it is probably your swing over the equipment.

go hit several and see which you like.  i usually go to golfsmith and luckily one of the courses here has most clubs to try.  indoors is great but i like to see the flight outdoors.

not sure what our handicap is but i am a 15-20 and i am currently gaming the TM RSi 1's.  for me it came down to these and the ping G30's.

if you're a better player, i would check out the mizuno MP line.  those clubs are beautiful.  not sure why but i love the simplicity of the new nike vapor irons also.

check out the golf digest hotlist - it just came out as well.

just saw you are 5 handicap - i would check out the mizuno MP line for sure.  the semi-game improvement irons may help with your distance.  i have heard good things about the TM RSi 2's as well.

If you have a pro you work with, have a swing check to make sure you don't have a swing/setup problem.

But, as saevel suggested, I suspect with your clubhead speed applied to R-flex shafts/cavity back head you're ballooning shots.

A few years back I was still playing S-flex for my clubs. When I would travel and get to play golf unexpectedly, the clubs I rented were usually R flex. I found I was "swinging easy" with the lighter feel, and losing about a half club in distance in the irons.

With your driver clubhead speed, the combo of stiffer and heavier iron shafts + heads with a lower VCOG might allow to have a more efficient swing.

In short: Get a swing check, and then get fitted.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
    • This is the part I don’t get. He’s not even kind of sandbagging, he’s blatantly doing it and submitting scores that are verified to be incorrect. How he’s not banned from competition is beyond me.
    • He's right in what he's saying.I also have done this experiment with a golf shaft swinging with one arm at a time.one arm at a time is for me very fast but both hands together are very slow ..I got my 17 year old son to do this experiment and he swung very fast with either hand and he swung very fast with both hands together..My conclusion up to now is ; I'm not using my wrists properly but I not a 100 percent sure just yet..I will keep trying to fathom this out .I'm a 12 handicap and my son is 3.9 at Westlancs..
