Hey guys!

So I started golfing about 2 months ago and so far have been really enjoying it, never really thought golf would be my thing, but I dig it. I have played 6 9 hole rounds and 1 18 hole round (which about killed me this weekend).

I have watched a bunch of David Leadbetter's instructional videos. I think he is a good teacher, and was easy to hold my interest. Overall I think watching the videos helped a ton, got me thinking about things during play and have substantially been improving my short game.

Anyway, let me get to the point. I feel I that I hit my irons and wedges pretty well, but the driver is killing me. I had a couple 'decent' shots this past Sunday on the front 9 and sometimes that a struggle, but when we got to the back 9 I couldn't hit a ball to save my life. I think I was getting tired as it was the first time we played 18, usually we just do 9.

My current driver was inherited from my generous father-in-law. It is a Cleveland Launcher DST Draw with a stiff shaft. Do you guys think it would be beneficial to switch to a regular shaft driver? I found one local used that is a Cleveland XL 270 driver with regular flex shaft that I can pick up. The irons I play with are stiff shaft and I feel fine with those and hit them quite well most of the time.

How far do you hit it with a driver? Any idea of your swing speed?

I'd recommend you try out the XL 270 and if you hit it better then buy it. You're new to the game so your swing is still progressing, maybe in 4-6 months make a visit to a golf store and get your speed measured and get a better idea of what driver will work best for your game.

Sound advice.

I went to the range tonight to practice with the driver, as well as some chipping/putting on the practice green. On the attempts that successfully sent the ball flying off the tee in the direction I intended, I noted only about 100-140 yards of flight. Not very good. But in other news, my chip/putt practice went much better. ;)

    • It was tongue in cheek attempted humor.   It seems like when humor is attempted on most forums, everyone interprets everything so literally, much like Bob Newhart’s German stand up character who says “Why do you call this man Curly?  He has no hair.  And this man you call Tiny, he weighs at least three-hundred pounds.”   Oh well.
    • Good luck on your golf journey.  If you can get to a golf range, take your 7/PW and hit ten/fifteen balls each.  Take half swings only.  That will show you what solid consistent solid feels like.  I’d say 99 out of 100 people will start taking full swings at some point during the drill.  It’s a great drill but it’s much harder than it sounds.  Good luck.
    • Nope. You’re just telling us who/what you like more. That’s fine of course, but not what this is really about. No different than those who think Tiger and Snead are tied in total wins. They’re not. Tiger has more. Period. That’s just a pure fact. So unfortunately you kinda fall under the ‘ just like Jack because I do’ group just as those who give Snead 82 by including wins that don’t count for Tiger. Asinine. You’re not using unbiased reasoning or logic for your choices. You’re not using statistics. Just pure melancholy and sentiment. Again, that’s fine but answer nothing.🙂
    • To be fair, bunkers are intended to be playable, and a bunker completely full of water isn't.  But that's why there's a Model Local Rule to address the situation appropriately.
    • I guess when you distill it down, a sand trap isn’t supposed to have a golf ball in it either.
