Getting Used to the New Rules of Golf

I have found getting used to the new Rules of Golf to be a bit of a challenge.  In time there is no doubt the revisions will become part of my golf process.  A number of the changes, however, are not reflexive and I have to consciously think about them.   The easiest new rule to re-learn is having the option to leave the flag in or take it out.  Since December I have been playing with the flag stick in.  After six rounds, it still looks odd putting from 20 feet or less with the flag in

ISSGA vs. MPSGA - Challenge Cup 2016

Well, the first Indiana State Senior Golf Association (ISSGA) versus the Michigan Publinx Senior Golf Association (MPSGA) golf tournament is in the books. Foursomes and Four-Ball matches were played the first day (9 holes each) with singles the second day (18 holes).  Sixteen four-ball matches, sixteen foursomes and 32 singles with a point for each match won, ½ for a tie.  The team with 32.5 or more points was the winner. Senior Ryder Cup - Indiana Style

This Monday I travel to the Ft. Wayne, IN, area for a Ryder Cup-style event between a group of senior golfers from Michigan versus a similar group in Indiana.  We are only going to play two days with the first day a team game, either foursomes or four-ball, or maybe a combination.  The second day is singles. I have never played a competitive foursomes or four-ball match.  I suspect most of the other players on the MI team have no experience, either.  I will need to brush up on the few Rul

For 60 years, when I walked, I carried my golf bag. Initially, there were no such thing as a “pushcart.” One either carried or one pulled a 3-wheel cart. I owned a 3-wheeler, but I rarely used it. I felt I could get around the course a lot faster walking across greens and taking short cuts through the heather or woodlands. Random Friday Thoughts

Disappointment – For me the most disappointing result in golf is when I hit a green in regulation and then 3-putt.  Yes, a “5” on a par 4 is a bogey no matter how one achieved that result.  Still, having a GIR and then throwing it away with my putter stings a bit more.  I am going to make a fair amount of mistakes and poor shots during a round and they often lead to bogey (or worse!).  When I manage to put together a decent drive and a well struck approach shot, I really need to make par (or bet

My Open Championship

I just competed in my 26th consecutive City Championship (one year the tournament was not held as the course was undergoing renovation).  It is a three-day stroke play tournament with the final day flighted (8 flights) based on the prior two days’ results.  At no time during those 26 tournaments did I ever have a chance to win the championship; I continue to play as a challenge to myself.  We get all kinds of players looking to see how they will do under three days of tournament pressure.

Dragged Into the 21st Century

My stepson and I went to two fitting sessions recently. The first was irons, and the second was driver/3-wood/hybrid. Each was two hours. I hit somewhere around 125-150 balls each time. I have never been a range rat and hitting 100+ balls was a chore.  Fortunately for me, the fitter had to swap shafts and heads which allowed me rest periods. Being a low-tech senior citizen, I had never hit balls in a simulator or been measured by a Trackman. Frankly, I did not want to know how slow my swing

The Season's Last Round

It seemed like my off season was going to start early when we had a cold snap and snow in early November. Fortunately, 2022-2023 is an El Nino year for the Mitten and we had a very temperate December with very little snow. I managed to play four rounds in December, including New Year’s Eve. My 2023 year started early with a round at Lake Forest GC (Ann Arbor) on January 3. The round in January was a real lifesaver. My previous attempt at golf on the last day of December had been a mess. I sort of use the blog area as a journal. Much of what I write in these blogs is boring to most of the TST population so I tuck it away here. As I posted in the Golf Talk Forum, I recently competed in the City of Livonia Golf Championship.  They hold the tournament on a couple city courses over two days. As a “super senior”, we play the forward tees at 5,300 yards or so. Measuring Sticks

Most of us have the need to occasionally talk about our accomplishments playing golf. When I have a particularly good round, I like to make a quick post to the “What Did You Shoot” thread. New Clubs

As reported, I ordered new fitted clubs at the end of July, 2022, and they arrived in mid-August. A new set of clubs after almost 20 years with my current set-up was unnerving for me. I decided to introduce the new guys a few at a time.  Initially, the 3-wood and 19-degree hybrid joined the family. These were easy changes. The old 3-wood had “only” been in the bag for 7-8 years. Winter at Leslie Park Golf Course

Something a little different for this post. My wife and I walk local golf courses in the off season for exercise and as a change of pace. We tend to go to courses when there is minimal snow (1-3 inches) on the ground. Walking through deeper snow is a real chose.
