Trouble with Expression

It's kind of odd. It's not like I have problems in social situations or anything, but I find I spend a lot of time typing up drafts and then deleting them. I've done it three times already, trying to start this blog. I just noticed I spent more than an hour on the site just now, going through different threads, composing responses. Some things I even took the time to research as part of my response. Then, for some reason or another, I decide it's not worth posting and delete the whole thing. It'

The First Amendment of the United States

This isn't meant to be a partisan discussion, simply a statement of the law. It bugs the shit out of me when people cite the First Amendment incorrectly. Here it is, verbatim: Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redre

I'm Tired of People Comparing COVID-19 to the Flu

Title. Seriously. Every day I talk to people who underplay COVID-19 by comparing it to the flu. Just today I spoke with someone who told me, "Tens of thousands of people die from the flu each year, we don't shut anything down for that!" Well you know what? It's not the flu. The flu is something we understand and have historical data for. This is new. A severe flu season has a death rate of 0.17% (something like 80,000 flu-related deaths in 48 million cases). As of today, 6,501 people died out of

Exhausted

These last two weeks have been crazy. Christmas activities combined with work ramping up have left me completely exhausted. One of the mechanics at work retired a couple of months ago and the work has been slowly backing up. On top of that, we had a couple of additional projects that needed to be done: first a soda machine needed to be installed last Thursday which involved working overnight and being awake for almost 24 hours, and a store closing just before Christmas which involved 40 h

Cabin Fever and eBay

I find myself looking at irons on eBay lately. It's a bad habit of mine. A few winters ago, I bought a set of vintage Hogans. They were kind of fun to kick around with for a bit. I played close to half that season with them even though they were way too much (or is it too little?) club for me. I still practice with them, but they're mostly collecting dust - some in the basement, some in the garage, and I have one (now two, actually) in the coat closet. Now I'm looking at Mizunos. Modern, th

    • Interesting thought.  Today I shot 77, I passed 69 when I got to 17 green.  A few weeks ago I shot 74 from the senior tees, made it through 17 complete before getting to my age.
    • This isn't something that I track. But I just took a look at the last round I played. I made it through 12 holes. At which time I had exactly my age.
    • I wonder who has the record for most times shooting your age - I would think there can't be anyone younger than Bernhard Langer who has done it more than he has, but there might be some 85 year olds around who've done it quite a bit along the way.  For those of us not yet advanced enough in age for it to be even feasible, I think it could be fun to track how far through a round you've made it by the time you hit your current age's shot. So if you're 55 say, then how far through the round ha
    • I actually shot a score from the senior tees earlier this year just 5 strokes over my age!  But YOU just have to get back to playing.
