I recently bought a used set of Srixon Z745 irons that are standard length. My previous set of irons were +1” and I hit those clubs pretty well. I also purchased a driving iron that is +2” over standard. I hit it extremely well, 230 carry off the tee and I’m so comfortable with it that it’s my favorite club. I don’t seem to hit my standard length irons as well as I should. I was going to add an extension to my set and was wondering if I should go 1” or 2” over standard?  I’m 6’5” and my wrist height is 40”. The ping sizing chart calls for a 1.5” extension with my measurements. My thought is to go 2” and choke down if needed, but would like to hear some different opinions.

Your height and "wrist to floor" has little to do with your position at address.  I'm 5'10" and my "wrist to floor" at address is 24 inches.  Standing straight up it's 30.  As such I have a more upright posture than the norm...to leave enough room between myself and the ball.  You have to find a spine angle that suits you and work it out from there.

Some cautions on shaft extensions from GolfWorks Academy:

  • Extend graphite shafts with graphite, and metal with metal (Exception: graphite universal extenders can be used for either)..
  • Extending graphite shafts with metal can create a shear point in the extension.
  • Do not extend a non-putter shaft more than 1 inch.

The following video covers the key points of extensions (sorry for audio slight echo):
