I bought a new 2008 20 degree a couple of weeks ago after trying it on a launch monitor. I've been able to take it to the course only once. My observations are these: the head is only slightly modified and feels about the same as last year's model, which was a definite improvement over the previous model; the real differance for me was the feel of the shaft. The VS Proto HL feels heavier and a bit stiffer than the NV-HL shaft used in the last two models. I would have sworn I loaded the NV better and hit the ball farther than the Proto, but my experience on the launch monitor says otherwise. I didn't compare my old 20 degree with the new one, but I seemed to hit the 2008 model as far as or farther than the older DWS.

Of course, my reason for using the hybrids is not so much distance as control, ease of use and just plain versatility. The older DWS models work just as well as the newer models in these regards. Perhaps the somewhat heavier shaft will help some people control the trajectory of their ball flight easier than with the lighter, whippier NV shaft.

In sum, the new model has every good thing the older model has with the addition of a slightly stiffer, heavier shaft. I like the old DWS ( and even the previous model ) very much. While I like the new one just as much, I think the new model is an evolution but not a radical departure and, therefore may not warrent purchasing unless one prefers the new shaft to the old. I would suggest trying the 2008 model on a monitor and compare the results with those of your current DWS.

I hope this helps.

I guess I will have to try the new one and see about the shaft, I like the shaft in the old one. Have you tried the new 08 Cobra Speed LD driver and woods?

This past year, I used a Cobra LD F speed 10 degree driver. I liked it a lot. About three weeks ago, I went to the Golfsmith in Memphis to try out the new L4V F speed. I hit the club on a launch monitor. My distances on my swings were actually a little shorter than with my LD. I sampled the new TaylorMade CGB. I couldn't get used to the shape of the head. Then the fitter asked me to try a driver to which I would never have given a second look: the Callaway Hyper X. I reluctantly agreed to give it a go.

I never cared for Callaway drivers. I've had several. I've used three different Cobra drivers over the past four years. I fully expected to walk out of Golfsmith with a new Cobra driver.

The first ball I struck with the Hyper X exceeded the best drive I hit with the Cobra by about 20 yards. I am not kidding. The fitter and I both looked at the launch monitor with our mouths open. I swung the Hyper X several more times. I gave it a few poor swings, but when I swung well, the results of those swings were equally as good as the first one. The Hyper X is now in my bag.

I have not tried the new 2008 LD. It had not been released when I was trying out the L4V. There will be a demo day at my club in April and I will give it a try, then.

I have never tried the Cobra fairway woods. I am sure they are superb. Frankly, I've been hitting my hybrids so well, I haven't bothered to look at fairway woods other than the Titleist 906F4. I bought one last summer and had it reshafted with an Aldila NV shaft, similar to those in my Cobra Baffler DWSs. However, I may give the Callaway Hyper X 3 wood a look see because of my experience with the driver.

I purchased two Cobra Baffler Pro Utility Hybrids. I liked them so much I bought a third, 20*. On the 16* and 18*, I have the Fujikara Speeder Shaft. I find this shaft performs better, for me, than the UST Proforce. The Proforce just balloons too much and I was not comfortable. On the 20*, I have a steel shaft and no complaints.

All three are really workable. I get a nice, high fade with a soft landing and can draw them, too but not nearly as high as the fade.

Can any kind soul advice me what type of swing (iron or wood) you used for your 16 Deg 1/R cobra baffler hybrid?

I have problem hitting it using the iron swing and a local fitter had adviced me that i should use the wood swing for this hybrid.

Will be trying out at the range next week but need some feeback from cobra hybrid guru here....

Thanks.....

    • Day 2: August 12.  I did 25 balls of the ruler drill from LSW for putting.  24 of the 25 stayed on the ruler through 36" but some were smoother than others.  I suspect if the ruler (and goal) had been 48" far fewer would have stayed on.  I'm trying to go by sound, and not look, since when I attempt short putts, I don't want to look (although now I wonder if that's conventional wisdom that turns out to be wrong).
    • Day 17: did mirror work while watching TV. Working on wrist feels.
    • Day 315 - 2025-08-12 Got a little work in before Juniors showed up for one of their Summer Sessions.
    • I always knew it as high but never that distance was 90-95% of rating! That has always played to my advantage. I never have but I could totally vanity cap myself by playing **super** long courses that are otherwise super easy. There was one course like that in LA that I used to play that helped my cap like that. The back tees were close to 7k yards, but otherwise the course was incredibly easy. Wide open, misses almost always had a play at the green from the adjacent hole, flat greens, not challenging green complexes, etc. But it got a high rating because it was so long. So I could swing hard, spray and pray, and score well (relative to my handicap).
    • Do need a special ferrul. Thanx 😉
