More drilling till wrists were sore + bucket of balls. Tried what it feels like starting from cupped position at the top, the palmar flexion of left wrist happens really early, not sure should I try to maintain it later into downswing.

Goals today:

- Day 1 wrist action in backswing (Right wrist dorsal flexing and pulling the left wrist in abduction), steep hands with left wrist palmar flexing in downswing.
➡️ Steeper hand path in dowswing, wrists still meh

- Make it as effortless as possible, keep the tempo same throughout whole session. This is your new tempo, keep it no matter what contact you make.
➡️ Did okay, bad shots didn't send me into rushing the rest of the session. Was shocked that one polet gave me 100 balls, took 3 hours to hit them. 😄

Recap of 2020 club championship held last weekend

Week before the event I thought I’ll skip it, because I’ve been hitting terrible hooks and haven’t entered a competition in 6 years. After all, decided to join and adjust my swing/mentality so I can keep the ball in play and hopefully hit it solid. The changes I made:

  • Switched the ball position forward (to inside of my front heel with all clubs), so it’s basically at my dynamic center

  • Ditched every single swing thought and just went with what’s natural for me atm

  • At the tee focused only at my target and the line/height I want to send my ball to. Found out using intermediate point infront of the ball isn’t for me, I play better when I pick my target straight from the distance.

The tournament was 3 rounds on 2 courses from white (back) tees with 155 people entering. After 2 rounds there was a cut made with best ~55 entering the third day, which was played on mixed course with both courses back 9’s.

First day I shot 88, it looks bad when I watch the score, but the thing is, I was quite happy with the way I hit the ball (10 GIR). What comes to putting, I had 42 putts, which is bad, especially because those didn’t come from me leaving myself stupidly long ones. I just couldn’t judge the speed or breaks at all, it was quite devastating being 15 feet from the hole and feeling like I need luck to make it in with two putts.

Sure, the pin positions were maybe slightly harder than usual and greens faster, but nothing that justifies it. Also didn’t feel any nerves making me putt bad (I know how it feels being nervous), I just had no touch to make anything. Truth is I probably need to take a lesson on putting and start to practice it the right way, or well to be honest, start practicing it all together.

Second day we played the tougher of the two courses and I shot 82 (13 GIR). I thought putting couldn’t get worse, but I felt it did, although this round I had “only” 39 putts. Best being 4 putts from 12 feet on hole 3, followed by 3 putts from even closer on the next hole. At that point I was so low, I actually wanted to miss the green on hole 6 so I don’t have to putt, luckily did miss it and survived with 2 putts after the chip.

Ball striking was better than on first round and had basically only one terrible shot, a pure shank on the first tee, which might have been little nerves/rushed shot. On back nine I decided to pull out my 3 wood since driver wasn’t feeling too solid. It turned out Henrik Stenson was hitting it for me, it was going way further than my driver and felt like I couldn’t miss a fairway with it.

I have never understood how handicap system works and don’t actually care enough to look it up. These were first cards I turned in this year, since I don’t turn anything in outside of competitions, never have. For some reason my HCP went down by 1,9 from 5,4 to 3,5, lowest it has ever been. Thought it would raise with those scores, but guess I scored on the right holes or something? Hoping to get more competitions in before winter, since I really enjoy playing those, pretty much always get more out of myself when competing. Biggest difference comes especially when the round is going badly downhill like on first day, don’t really remember ever “giving up” like on some practice rounds.

Good goal for next year could be making the cut.

~30 balls today to see what it looks like, focus on wrists, but not forcing it. Tempo was back to normal fast it seems although I felt “slow and rhythmic”.

Also had this one drop in mailbox today after work, can’t wait to dive into it!

One partial, one full swing, repeated ~20 times.

Full swing got shortened, I didn't try to shorten it. Maybe flattest my shaft has been in downswing since starting this thread.

Was meant to talk about this in post #40, but was bit in hurry. The feeling I had on those last swings with wrists were that there was no active action. This is what it looks like when I drill it:

Newtons third law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In my mind by simply keeping the right hand ontop of the shaft like @iacas told in day 1 covid drill, following things should happen:

- Wrists become the last lever to load, because there is no left wrist flexion/right wrist extension in early backswing
- Arms get a head start to club on downswing, club still travels back when hands are coming down
- The change of direction with club becomes a looping action, more efficient way to change directions than fully de-accelerating. Club becomes more like a whip.
- Wrist become the last lever to unload, because of newtons third law
- This way I can actually pull the club up and down like Bryson tells here (If I extend the right wrist early, I have to push the club up, or that's what I feel):

My question is, can you make this work, is anyone playing like this (Bryson?)? I suspect so since @iacas said this in day 1 drill video: "Alot of the wrist action happens pretty early in the backswing, for a lot of people..."

What is the downsides? I remember someone saying partial shots can be harder to execute.

Work has taken all my time basically, managed to get out early today and hit some balls. Filming was bit tricky since had to balance the phone ontop of bag. Hoping to play a round this weekend, if it doesn't pour water.

    • Eh... what's he going to say? "Hey, I bought a new driver. It's 10 yards shorter and I hit twice as many OB now." Does he have any data to back up his claim? Or is he just going by what he saw at his fitting?  I've been using either Shotscope or Arccos since 2018 and if there's one thing I've learned is that it's the archer not the arrow. When I'm hitting the driver well, it goes far and straight. When I'm a mess, it's a mess.  If you were properly fit for a driver in the last (dare I say 10 years) 5 years for sure. I'd be surprised if you can get more than a couple of yards out of it by getting a new one. The COR rule has been 0.83 since 1998, with widespread and standardized enforcement since 2003. Obviously, the engineers can still optimize spin and launch and shaft flex and/or kick point. So there are things that can be done. But I believe the days of 10 or 15 yard gains are over... unless your current driver is unfit for you. (as @Typhoon92 mentions above.) If you were fit for your epic. You will likely see very little on course performance difference.  Having said that, I get a new driver every 2 or 3 years... Why? Because I like shiny things. So, if you want a new driver, get a new driver.
    • My suggestion to you is to take your driver with you and go to a golf store where you can hit the new Ping 440 AND your own driver side by side.  They you can decide.  Very simple test you can do for free. You have no idea ( and your friend probably doesn’t either) how old his old driver was, what loft it was compared to the new one, what shaft and flex he had in his old driver vs. the new one.
    • I might be inclined to try to figure out what is bothering them. Is it that their index is 12 but they're only getting 10 strokes? If that's the case then I think I would just point out that their handicap is being adjusted for the difference between par and the course rating. It's adjusting for this course being easier than typical for the par. Course rating being roughly what a scratch should shoot on a good day and par being the sum of the numbers on the card. The whole concoction (which Erik and Dave explained already) is simply a way to get everyone to play on an even playing field. So if everyone plays to their handicap, then they'll all have the same net score. The adjustments are there mainly for those instances where something more complicated is happening like playing different sets of tees, but still apply otherwise. It's also easiest to say "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 10 over par to play to your handicap" rather than "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 12.4 over the course rating after adjusting for the slope", which is a whole lot of gobbledygook to people who don't know how the system works.
