Anyone re-grip their own clubs?

A buddy of mine wants to re-grip his clubs but he's not sure if he should do it himself or take them to the proshop. Seems less expensive to do it yourself but is it that easy?

Actually it is pretty easy to do. I re-gripped my clubs for the first time last year and I found it very simple. This year however, I had a little trouble getting them on quickly. I think the reason for that was because I didn't have enough of the solution it comes with, so make sure you have enough of that.

The local shop here uses plain old odorless mineral spirits.

They told me the key to regripping is a good vice with a non-marring grip in the teeth.

I agree...if you have a good vice with the non-marring grip will make all the difference. I do it in the garage and have to be careful that it isn't too cold...that can effect the grips in that they won't slide on as well.

By far once you get the right equipment (vice, shaft holder for vice, tape, solvent, scraper for old tape) then you will find that trying different grips isn't that big a deal. $3-5 bucks and you can change them very easily. I've also been able to chat with the local Golfsmith and they have offered great tips and techniques when I ask.

Cheaper to take it to your proshop usually. I use to get charged $5.00 per grip and that included installation. If he does it himself he will need grip tape and solvent at minimum

About $100 for a Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord .580 Round Grip Kit from Golfsmith. That kit includes 13 grips, Grip kit instructions, Rubber vise clamp, 8oz grip solvent, & 14 individual grip tape pip strips. Watched the video on GolfPride.com and it looked fairly straight-forward. Heck, my dad was able to do it in the past...

Granted, since I only plan on using these clubs for this season then I may look for a little less expensive grip.

Could give me a chance to bond with my clubs...

I got a used set of Ping I-3's off Ebay, grips were OK but I decided to change them out to some Lamkin Midsize chords. As a new golfer, I had zero expereince regripping clubs.... It was very very easy with the right tools (supplied by Golfsmith in their grip kit). My three peices of advice are as follows: 1. USE A VICE!!! 2. Once you start sliding the grip on, DONT STOP! I learned the hard way that if you stop half way, you probably wont be able to keep going and you'll have to cut that grip off :( 3. Apply the solvent generously, but only to the inside of the grip, avoid exposing the grip tape to generous amounts of solvent as this will cause the griptape to slide around and bunch up as you slide the grip on. I always regrip my own clubs, its much cheaper and you dont have to wait for your clubs. Hes going to need double sided grip tape, a vice, a knife to strip the old grip off with, a tool to take off the old tape on the clubs, and solution. Most golf websites have what you need in kits. Tell him not to skimp on solution, pour that stuff on there, you'll be glad you did.

Pour the solution in the grip (finger over the hole on the butt) and swish it all around. Then pour it out on the shaft and get the tape nice and wet then slide that puppy on. Piece of cake!

Takes a little practice but it's not hard. Buy a kit. Get a vice (I bought a vice that suctions to a flat surface, works great). Lots of instruction online. You can even build up the grips a little for a custom fit if need be. I have taken my putter to a shop to help me with that though. Want to make sure it's straight. Gotta be precise!
