So I'm new to golf very new I am looking to get a my first set of clubs for myself for my birthday this june. My issue is that I am a poor college student so I don't have much money. Im just looking for some advice on what I actually need and the best way to spend my money. I have been told that I should stay away from used is that true. Lastly Im sort of a minimalist considering that are there any good bags out there with out the million huge pockets and such. Thanks in advanced for the help.

Whoever said stay away from used Does really not know what they are talking about.

If you really cant afford much, then thats the place to go. We'll need to some info to give you some suggestions though.

Your Swing Speed
Since you dont have a handicap (what you usally shoot at a par 72 course)
What price range your looking in.

Once you give us some info we could really give you some great advice.

I got my set of Tommy Armour forged Silver Scot Tour irons for $125 new and love them. The shafts are rifle flighted, and have a little higher launch than I'd like, but the irons feel great and perform the same. Highly recommended.

Okay, in my opinion, Used clubs are 100% the way to go. They are the same price practically as off brand clubs new and are twice as good. Steer clear of off-brands. They don't have the technology, and are often just steel shaped like clubs. I would suggest Ping Eye 2 Irons. You can get them used on ebay for ~$250. That is a very low price for what some consider the best iron set ever made. Look for used clubs in your local pro-shop for woods and such. Also, look on ebay for an old Karsten Solheim Ping Putter. Can be had for ~50, again, an oldie but goodie reliable club. Usually at this price you can find the anser models and the zing models. But, once you develop a repeatable swing with consistent results, save up the money to go get fitted. EDIT: I was assuming your usual score on 18 holes would be 100-120. However, it would be helpful to specify.

This brings up a good point someone will surely mention, but I had forgotten. Try and hit the irons before you buy them if possible. Maybe since you're just starting it isn't as important, I'm not sure. For example: I just can't stand the way ping irons feel. It's a personal thing because there are a huge number of people that love them. Not to digress; the point is different brand irons can feel completely different when you hit them.

I just went through this issue with my cousin who picked up my clubs for the first time at a driving range this past weekend and was testing them out. He wants to spend big and just get them now (specifically TM r7's), but i've convinced him with the help of a golf pro to get starter clubs (the ones with the whole set). Here's my theory on it. These are your first clubs. You're going to topping, slicing, grounding, shanking, twisting, and just basically beating the living daylights out of these things so why spend so much. You're learning. We all had to learn. My first set of clubs 4 years ago now were Tommy Armour 855 silver scotts as well that were on sale for $150 (full iron set). I bought a $70 clearance Mizuno driver, two no name wedges and i think a wilson putter for $20 a piece. The bag cost more than my driver. Save your money and learn with a starter set you can pick up for a couple hundred bucks at a local golf store, or get a decent set of used clubs. You're learning so dont waste your money. Also dont waste your money on balls either and just get the combo packs of 30 balls for $18 or $20 bucks. You will lose them. We all do. Best of luck man...

To answer some questions honestly I have never played a full 18 holes. The most I have done is play a back yard course through the neighborhood with I guess the neighbors, and I have hit a local driving and chipping range with friends. Having said that I don't know my swing speed or my average. I don't have the access to clubs to find an average I could Get my speed at the local shop. Should I worry about that for my first set? beyond that Should I stay away from places like Dicks sports or sports authority? and finally for round two Im looking to spend as little as possible are the 200 300 dollar sets worth while until I get comfortable?

Look, go to the local golf store and check out the traded-in clubs. I saw a great set at Golf Galaxy yesterday. Fresh grips and you're good to go. Don't get forged blades. Get a decent cavity back. Or check Craig's List. Somebody local may have a deal on something. I'd say ebay but don't get crazy for your first set.

Some solid advice right there my friend

IMHO-You definitely should think about some lessons too! Always good to learn the right way before you develope bad habits(like pull-hooks )

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
