A group of us are playing a week in Arizona next month, and we are permitting ourselves to carry and use a 15th "desert" club for hitting out of rocks, dirt and the many less-than-club-friendly places our golf balls will find themselves. (I know that scratched clubs don't really affect performance).  What's the best desert club?  5 iron? 8 iron?

I suppose it depends on the length of the golf course.  I would say somewhere between a 7 and PW.  Personally I would like a PW because that is one of the favourite clubs in my bag and is useful enough to get you out of must situations onto the fairway.  If you are intending to use it to reach a green, then a longer club may well be required.  Definitely don't go something as long as a 5 iron, unless the course is such that you have no rough to speak off, in which case a 5 iron would be useful as punch out type of club to keep it low

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

6 or 7 iron?   I guess it kind of depends on what club is versatile for you.   You could have anything from pitch shots to full on shots to get back into play.   Maybe whatever you would use in a one club tournament?
