I am looking into getting my first set of clubs as I posted about a week ago. While I was searching my dad told me he had an old hand me down set so I pulled them out to take a look. The woods are definitely old they are still made of wood at least for the most part. The irons are a full set 2 to PW they are Walter Hagen Ultradyne 2s. The putter is a standard putter I think a brass head. I think the woods and putter might be from from the same set as the irons. Finally the newest club is the driver, a Taylermade burner 10.5 I don't know what year but it is over 6 or 7 years for sure and it looks undersized in comparison to what I've been seeing lately. My questions are these. Are any of these clubs any good or would they make a good first set? Secondly would they be worth selling or could I make enough to maybe buy a newer set?

Thanks

To be honest, learn to play on what you have. When you develop a repeatable swing, thats when I would fork over the money on a new set. Right now you have no clue what kind of clubs you need. Stick with what you have

I hate to disagree with the guys above me but it bothers me when people say that. Why if you want to learn the game would you make a hard sport harder by using outdated less forginving equipment? I am not saying buy 1100 dollar set of clubs but a used set of recent irons and last years driver model all told could run you what mabe 400 bucks? money well spent if you ask me. I have seen many people try to learn the game with old sets of clubs and most of them just give up on the game.

I agree with wigolffan. Get a cheap set, you can get a good set for around 400 bucks with a driver, and the woods, plus the irons and putter.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
