I just started playing about 6 months ago and carry a handicap in the mid to upper teens. Im graduating from high school this year and recieved a 500 dollar gift card to a golf store. If you had this and my clubs which would you upgrade first. I am hopeing to get the handicap down around 10 over the next year. I know that may be a bit much but in 6 months (4 of playing outside, other 2 just inside stuff putting, chipping) im down to an 18. Then I'd like to play at a D3 college and be close to scratch by my senior year of college. Right now I carry a driver about 240-250 (25 or so of roll) and a 7 iron about 155 yards. Thanks in advance.

TM Burner 420 (5 ish years old but it was bought when it first came out)-Very Good Condition

SV3 3 Wood (Brand New got it for free w/ upgraded graphite shaft)-New

Cleveland 2 Halo Hybrid (Bought used for $45 steel shaft)-Excellent

Yamaha Carbon Secrets 3-PW (10 yrs old w/ graphite shafts)-Good

52, 56, 60 F2 Wedge Clones (4 months old)-Excellent

60 Aspire Lob Wedge (6 months old 15 dollar walmart special-use sometimes in place of other 60 wedge)-Very Good

Ping Gi5 Putter (6 months old)-Like New

So if you had 500 dollars to upgrade what would you do (besides lessons, because I having them too)?

I was thinking maybe getting some Ben Hogan BH5 irons and maybe a Nike SQ 460 5000 Driver. Ive seen both going for around 200 dollars and have heard great reviews of both. Once again thanks for any imput.

I agree that the irons need to be replaced. Should I go with graphite or steel shafts?

Is the driver old enough for an upgrade to make a big difference?

Id say yes the Driver could also go for an upgrade, but Irons I think are more of a priority for you.

I would say get fitted for some irons. Beware, if you go the route of the newest and greatest, you'll use of your whole card+some of that extra graduation money you receieve

Best of luck!

Does the store have used clubs? You can sometimes save half on last year's models. If you don't want used, at least check the clearance stuff. Last year's models are still way cheaper than the newest stuff. You could also ask if they match competitor's prices. Golf Galaxy will match any advertised price on new stuff, even from online retailers like rockbottomgolf.com, scorelow.com, globalgolf.com and others. They just want verification of the price. I'd ask them to match the price, before I show them the gift card.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
