i recently bought titleist ap1 irons and my wedge just doesnt have enough loft 50*....... i can buy a titleist vokey spin milled oil can finish 54* wedge barley used for 40.00 ........ my 2 questions are

1. will i notice a big difference between my regular wedge and the 54* vokey loft wise like in the sand or just getting the ball up cause of risky lies and green shots........

2. or should i go to edwin watts and give $100.00 or more for a vokey thats new and pick the bounce and loft i want but i really dont know what lofts i want cause its my first REAL WEDGE.......

if i go for option 1 i can get my head covers as well and golf balls and pay for my green fees.....

but if i go for option 2 im gonna have to wait cause i blew my 100.00 and im still out of head covers and my irons are getting banged up cause of it......

SO WHAT DO I DO!?!?!?!?

In my set, a 54/55/56* would be my sand wedge. One advantage of getting that club is that you can take a full swing from about 20 yards closer to the green than you can with a normal 50* wedge. I'm a big fan of full swings from as close as I can manage and carry 4 wedges for that reason. My 65* gives me full swing capability from half the distance of my normal wedge.

I'd save the money and get the cheaper club, since it is a solid brand name and should work well. After you learn when, where, and how to use it, you could "trade up".

You will notice a huge difference between 50 and 54, especially from sand because im assuming that 50 you have now doesnt have alot of bounce on it.

Im much differnt from alcyone in that im just as comfortable with half and three quarter swings as i am with a full swing. So im okay with having a strong lofted set of irons, but you may not be and thats something to consider. But my guess is that the wedge you got with your AP'1set is a gap wedge, and not a pitching wedge (the club i think youre talking about) Its all about coverages. Its deal to have 4 or 5 degrees loft seperation in your scoring clubs. (or in general)

So if you already have a 50 degree wedge, your pitching wedge should be 46 or 47. That said, you dont need to get rid or the 50, just keep it and add the 54 vokey you can get really cheap and use it as your SW. Have a pro add a degree to 55 if you want. At 40 bucks, you cant beat that for a vokey wedge if it is in decent condition.

You need something that has more loft than 50 degrees. I would not buy the new one because it does not sound like you know exactly what you want yet.
It is pretty easy to find used wedges at golf stores.

I would go with a 56 degree, with a normal bounce. This is a standard "sand wedge" and you will be able to do a lot with it around the greens, and should be able to hit it 70-100 yds with a full swing.

Also, a little advise, don't let somebody talk you into getting another wedge yet. Learn how to use this one in many different situations. Put in the back of your stance and chop down on it to keep it low and induce spin. Learn how to open it up and flop it. Having too many options (i.e. gap wedge, lob wedge) when learning to hit these shots can cause quite a bit of frustration.

i wasent getting rid of my 50* cause my ap1 set comes with a pitching wedge and a gap wedge...... i was going to get the 54 and see if i like it i could always get my money out of it and yes my sand shots are pretty low i got to really blast them out to get out of a decent sized bunker.... i figure the 54 will make things alot easier and around the green
