I am fed up with the graphite shaft in my 17* hybrid. It's too light, and I swing it like it's a fairway wood. I've wrapped quite a bit of lead tape under the grip and above the hosel, but it's just not enough. Too many of my well struck shots are big, diving hooks. Gotta be the shaft, right?

Anyway, there are a couple of threads on this, but I wonder if anybody's got new insight on putting a steel shaft in a hybrid. I know I'll lose some distance, but I couldn't possibly care less. I want to control it my shots better and be more consistent.

Mizuno's stock steel for the CLK is some kind of proprietary superlight, so I could do that. I've played DG S300s enough to know what I might expect from those. I'm getting Rifle 6.0 shafts put in a set of Callaway X-14 PS irons, so I could match those. Any advice is certainly welcome.

I replaced the graphite shaft in my 20 degree Adams Idea Pro a couple weeks ago with a Project X 6.0. Couldn't be happier!

It knocked my carry distance down from about 230 to more in the 220 range and fills the gap nicely between my 5 iron and 5 wood. The steel shaft has also made the club much more accurate.

In short, it now plays like a versatile 3 iron. Before it played a bit too much like a fairway metal.

The Rifle 6.0 would probably be a good fit since that is your preferred shaft.

I replaced the graphite shafts in my TaylorMade Rescue Mid hybrids last year with DG S300s. I also shortened them by 1/2" under TM's standard length for steel shafts. It was a great move -- I make so much better contact now that I lost virtually no distance and I hit them very straight now.

I also built a new set of Lynx Black Cat Tour hybrids (see signature) and didn't even mess with graphite, I went straight to steel. I've only hit them a few times but they are longer than the Rescue Mids and have a very nice feel.

If you do re-shaft your hybrids with steel you may need to re-swingweight the clubs. My TM Rescue Mids had tip weights in them for the graphite shafts so the headweights were already the right weight for steel shafts. I suspect a lot of other OEMs do the same thing.

Besides the DGS300 shafts, the TT XL Lite shaft is not a bad hybrid shaft. It's a little lighter and has a little softer tip. It will tend to launch the ball a bit higher than the DG S300s.

Another great steel hybrid shaft is the Nippon Steel NSPro 8950GH. I've never heard anything but rave reviews of them in fairway woods and hybrids. They play a little soft to flex, just as a heads up. I came very close to putting these in my Lynx BC tour hybrids but I already had the TT XL lite shafts in my shop.
