The early St Andrews hole diagrams weren’t just maps—they actually named hazards like “Coffins,” “Cat’s Trap,” and “Lion’s Mouth.”

You can almost read how the hole was meant to be played just from the illustration.

I’ve been restoring a few of these recently—curious if anyone here has come across others like this?

Mauligan, I cannot say with certainty.   It was a while ago.   I have several others that I sell on my website with a few more coming to complete the set of 18.

    • Tour balls often spin less for higher handicappers than some of the softer golf balls. They'll spin more around the greens, but that's not the same as spin off the driver (or with a 5 hybrid, or a 7-iron).
    • Not necessarily true. High handicappers quite often use a lot of spin, but not deliberately and now with control, and this is why they need to use balls that spin less. The video on golf balls I watched (which I agree with) specified that the worst ball a high handicapper can use is a tour ball such as the PROV1. The ball that came out on top for low swing speeds with the Srixon Soft. After eleven years of play I believe I have found my optimum ball which is the Titleist Velocity.
