I have to open this post and rave about Top Flite's new Freak ball. Honestly, I bought a set of Bridgestone e5 and e6's a few weeks ago and they played well, and I decided what the hell, the freak's were rated well so let me see how they perform. Well, I can honestly say they perform really, really well. I dont feel like spending $30-$45 for 12 balls, not because I can't, it's simply because I dont want to. For $15 for a box of 12, in my humble opinion, they're really hard to beat.

I played a 6300 yard course on sunday with 5 drivable par 4 holes (315 yards, 267 yards, 327 yards, 252 yards, and 280 yards) and i drove each one using my driver or 3-wood with the Freak ball (i've been on this forum where people doubt that people can drive 300 yards if you're not a pro, but I can and did). The only one that didnt carry was the 327 yard hole as it rolled up onto the green.

Im not here to argue that, but put my stamp of approval on this freak ball. It's the ball i'll be using for the summer... If anyone else has any input on the ball, please share.

How does it feel when you putt them? I tend to avoid Top Flites because they feel pretty hard.

It's hard to tell to be honest because i'm still getting adjusted to my putter as I recently bought it. It didnt feel much different than when I was putting with the Bridgestone's. I'll be able to tell better when I get more play time, but for the most part, they putted well. I only three putt 3 times over the weekend and that was simply because I couldnt read the green for the life of me, but I had a few good putts and a couple of drained putts using the Freak ball. I cant blame my putting on the ball...it was all me.

That is the

old "Rock Flites". The new Top Flite balls (D2's, Freak, Gamer) released since Callaway bought them are a whole different kettle of fish. I played the D2 Feel as my gamer last season and it's a great ball. The D2 Distance ball is quite good as well. I have a dozen of the new Gamer ball I am waiting to try on the course, hopefully early next week. I have chipped and putted with them for a few weeks now and they feel great. It got great reviews in the Golf Magazine golf ball test in February.

The Freak is a 2 piece ball. The Gamer is a 3 piece ball. I haven't played the Freak but I suspect the cover is pretty durable since it's a Surlyn blend. I would think it is very similar to a DT So-Lo.

The Gamer has a softer, thinner cover. Not as durable as a surlyn cover but the reviews on it say it spins quite well due to the softer cover and 3 piece construction but is still reasnably durable. If it's anything like the D2 Feel (and I've heard it's similar but softer cover and longer) then I think I will really like them. I can't wait to try them soon.

I believe it to be a two piece ball:

http://topflite.com/balls/freak/?gcid=1563

I should note that what I did was to use this ball on long par 3's, 4's and 5's and used the Bridgestone e6 on shorter holes for more playability, but i didnt see that much of a difference to be honest. My ball stopped quicker on the greens with the e6s, but it was only by a few yards. Im really thinking of trying the Gamer ball instead of the e6's moving forward for shorter holes for more control...

Ooops sorry. I forgot about the scuffing question. No, the ball didnt scuff much or wear down on me during my round. One ball did as I was trying to hit down on a ball with a 54 degree wedge, but for the most part, they held up quite nicely.

So you said it chipped well too? I played a round with the D2 feel and I still thought it rolled out too much on chips. At least compared to a NXT Tour and B330s ball.

It chipped ok. It rolled a bit more than i wanted, but then again, i didnt know what to expect with the ball because it was my first time out with it. I'm not a pro player. If im being fair, then ill say it hit well, rolled well, but chipped ok. Getting it to stop with the right amount of spin was more challenging than other balls, the 3 piece balls, but that was expected. Im going to really compare the two when i play sometime in the next week or two with Top Flite's Gamer and see the differences in both balls...

I just tried the gamer a couple days ago and I was very impressed. I also tried the HX hot bite, and it was also good, although honestly I have to give the nod to the gamer. The gamer felt better, seemed to fly farther, and had about the same bite around the greens (I actually got one to back up a foot or two - but the green was sloped toward me); both felt a lot better than the old nike mojos that I was using. The hot bites seemed to fly really high compared to my normal trajectory, although this could have just been something in my swing.

I did chew a gamer up pretty bad (it hit a couple trees); the hot bites seemed to hold up well (played one for about 9 holes or so and it looks fine).

thanks for the heads up cause I love the D2 "Distance" personally, and if the "Freak" is just as good then I will have to try them out......

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
