Scenerio: Should both these golfers hit the same shaft???

Hypothetical situation:

Golfer A reaches 110 mph clubhead speed with his driver. He has a solid grip and fairly quick takeaway and really loads the shaft at the top of his downswing.

Golfer B reaches 110mph clubhead speed also with his driver. He has a slow and smooth takeaway and pauses a bit at the top of his backswing and then alows his body to pull the trigger.

Do these golfers need to be hitting the same shaft???

Sure, it just depends on the type of shaft. I could see both of them swinging a Stiff shaft, about 70-75 grams with a lower torque, say 2.8. The heavier shaft and somewhat lower torque will allow golfer A not to lose control of the shaft. Golfer B should not have any problems, at all, with this type of shaft.

Okay....so you are saying that clubhead speed is clubhead speed regardless how they load it transitioning into the downswing.

That was the position my friend was taking during a recent range discussion.

I don't believe this is true, but the 2 golfers you described probably

could require the same shaft depending on their respective angles of attack, etc.

What he said. There's a chance (small) they might be best fitted with the same shaft, but I think it's unlikely.

They'd probably want different shafts. Then again, they'd have to be pretty darn good (9 handicap or better) to really notice a consistent difference. Most 9+ golfers aren't anywhere near consistent enough to tell the difference between most shafts within the same flex class.

Whats the point of the question?

That if you both went to the launch monitor and got fitted for a driver shaft that you would both would be fitted for different shafts or just simply different flex of a shaft? There are many facters to a shaft then just the flex stamped on the side.

Or are you asking that if both of you could use the same stiff shaft that comes with the driver you buy off the rack?

The only thing they measure on the monitor is what the ball does when it leaves the club face. If you both had simular launch angles, ball speed and ball spin then there wouldn't be any reason why you both wouldn't be fitted for the same shaft. The monitor doesn't care what you did to get the ball to do what it measures.

My point was that the golfer with the slow takeaway and smooth transition may not need the stiffness like the other golfer with the "Nick Price" takeaway.

He may...in this case....benefit from a "regular" flex.

I don't know about the high tech stuff....launch monitors and all that jazz. The debate was about getting the guy to just open his options some and not be sold on having to have to only play a "stiff" shaft.

As smooth as his takeaway may be, he's generating a lot of force and speed through impact. He's probably finishing his swing in a high position. He could get away with a regular depending on the weight of the shaft and other variables.

FWIW, I'll use an example. I hit two different Nickent hybrids. One had a regular shaft and the other had a stiff shaft. I could not tell the difference as both weighed the same and the kickpoints were almost identical. Additionally, the Regular flex was designed for players with a +95MPH, swing, the stiff for +100MPH.
