number 1 is the hardest hole on the course, 18 being the easiest... Although I disagree sometimes w/ that assesment.

Actually, not necessarily. Number 1 is where the first shot is given, and so on to 18, but the index is sometimes arranged to give balance, so that you don't have a mismatch between 9s or a bunch of low holes right at the start or finish.
