This has been a pretty good driver for me thus far this season, but driving has always been a weakness of mine- i go back and forth between fading and drawing the ball.

So what i wanted to get at is- is there a more consistent shaft that i should look into getting? My distance is always 275 when its straight so i am willing to sacrifice a little distance for straighter shots.

What about the club itself? i think someone told me the 905 is made for shaping your shots. should i get a different club that is made for only hitting straight (if such a thing exists) or hit the driving range hard and try to learn to hit a fade and draw?

I know practice is #1. But is there anything else that will help? thanks

I think the combination of a 905R with a YS-6 is excellent, but all drivers will draw and fade, it just depends on your swing. Although all titleist drivers should be less draw biased than most other brands.

Ys-6 is a good shaft but titleist drivers are very unforgiving if your swing is not 100% . Practice makes perfect

I picked this club up when it first came out and found that my ball ballooned with that particular shaft. Best thing to do is just demo the club and just experiment on the course/ range

yeah but thats why i got the R--- its plenty big. i feel like my contact is really good, its just a matter practice. i was mainly concerned to whether this was a good shaft, so thanks.

I had that exact driver before I went to Carlsbad to be fit on a launch monitor. I thought it was excellent for me, but I found out that my misses, usually big, sweeping hooks, were enhanced by the softer tip section of the YS-6. I never thought a tip stiff shaft would work for me because I only swing about 100-102 mph, but the shaft he fit me to has really worked out as I have much less curvature on my drives now. Maybe give one of those a try....

Well he was saying that the YS-6 has a very weak tip which causes it to be a more flexible shaft near the head. This would cause it to be a bit less consistent and when you try and put a bit extra into one, it could cause a snap hook or baloon. (I think)

I see that he has put a Prolaunch Red into his, which is an excellent accuracy shaft, as it is very stiff.

thanks that is exactly what i wanted to hear. I do feel like the tip could be too weak near the tip, and i also just switched to a metal shaft in my hybrid and saw AMAZING results. I want the stiffest most consistent shaft i can get.

i would love to try that prolaunch red. i will look into it more. Any other info would be great- like where to get it, how much, and if there are any other shafts i should consider

Also try the normal Prolaunch (blue). The red is a tour shaft and might be too stiff unless you have a very fast tempo. The Proforce V2 is also an excellent, very consistent shaft so definetly try that too.
If your local fitter has a callaway Opti-fit thing, you could just try all the different shafts with a FT-5 head to see what the shafts react like.

ok but is there such thing as too stiff???? i want all accuracy. as far as swing speed i'm not sure but i have 300 yard drives quite often i was just being humble... but i don't feel like i am trying to kill the ball...

Well if it is too stiff for your swing, it will feel "boardy", and you will probably cut the ball more than needed, and have trouble hitting draws. I think it is more to do with the tip than the actual stiffness rating of the shaft (R,S,X).
If you can get a swingspeed and tell me your tempo, that could help.

OH, so you already have that shaft.
Well its your choice, I would say either:
Prolaunch Blue 75G stiff
OR
Proforce V2 75G Stiff.

weight and torque have more to do with a shafts flex than the stiffness of the tip. i would be more worried about getting a heavier shaft than anything else. a guy i play with had a aldila green 85-x in his driver and it was the best feeling i ever felt. i also have about 106-107mph club head speed, so not quite at an x-flex by the standards of it but it would work great for me. also if you are looking for more consistency the easiest thing to do is tip the shaft you have now. it will make it shorter and stiffer at the same time. dont butt trim it though because it will make the tip even weaker.

Have a fitter take a look at your shaft. He can do two things with it that should improve control. One, he can cut the shaft down from the butt. By doing this, he can also make it slightly stiffer. Two, he can pure the shaft. This will give the shaft a constant kick point and flex. You can read, more, here: www.sstpure.com . This process is anywhere from $50-$70.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
